it is different and i like it, they seemed to run forever these old trannys, much more reliable than the TDCI lumps, but horrendously slow as i recall, none the less will be interesting to see the updates

Rather than lowering the front what about fitting assistor springs or airbags to the rears so you can make it look not sooo heavy..If possible can you lighten the bed a bit to save potential grief for overloading if you do get stopped?
Nowhere near as bad as it could be rot wise though - I still see one or two running about with wings gaffer taped over for the MOT.
Nice colour I can't remember seeing one that dark grey shade before - was it a Ford colour?
Good to see another commercial on here!

Recarouk - You're right she does seem to run forever. She has 245k on the clock. She is incredibly slow, however she will pull all day long. We ran it as it is in the last picture pulling the trailer with another car. So that's quite a gross train weight (GTW) Never missed a beat and just kept going in return for diesel. The diff used to get hot but otherwise nothing. Dodgerover - I could remove the wheel rack I suppose, but it is quite useful. I did have the half bed rather than the full bed to reduce the weight. The airbag idea does sound a very good idea indeed. I'm guessing I could also lower it when loading as well by deflating? I'm not too clued up on airbags to be honest. The many gaffer typed trucks are exactly what I DON'T want this one to look like. I want it to be a cut above those "scrap it through" vehicles. It's not a Ford grey, well spotted. It was a Scania grey. I wanted something that looked smart but not like a recovery truck. I might change the colour though. I have a massive soft spot for old commercials. Thanks for the comments

My mate picked up my W124 with his beavertail Transit last week. I drove it part of the way, great old truck, first time I've driven one since my dad taught me to drive in his.

Blank the EGR off and take the inlet manifold off and give it a good de coke as you will probably find one of the inlet holes will be nearly blocked shut with oily curse word and you can always advance the pump a tad along with good filters you should see a difference.

THE_Liam - They're great old plodders mate. I love mine, with the armrests down they're really comfortable to drive long distances too. Joe90 - The EGR was blanked off when it decided to stick and she bellowed out black smoke and lost power! I'll definitely look at taking off the inlet manifold, that's a good shout. She will be treated to a bloody good engine service soon. I've just found the body panels on EBay from Central panels. Did they need much fettling to make them line up?

i was actually surprised how good the last set of transit panels i had to do one were- way better than the usual panels i get brought to fit to common classics like minis and beetles. and they were just from the local paint shop, supplied by what used to be hadrians. i had the front inner and outer wing, entire sill step, back cab corner and half the floor out, and they all slotted in and lined up perfect.

Yep is great to see something different, the old smiley transits were in my opinion the best of the era, when I had my own business back in the early 2000s I had sprinters and transits, my 99 2.5 diesel hi cube was without doubt the best van I ever owned well built and never went wrong.... The sprinters brought me nothing but tears and grey hair!!! ...look forward to following your work

Dez - That's good to hear, I think i'll probably need some of those other panels you mention as well.
Dan Passco - Thanks buddy, much appreciated.
Mercdan68 - I did my apprenticeship when 'Smileys' were new. They were so easy to work on, they never ever went wrong no matter how much abuse you threw at them. I've never had a Sprinter van or worked on them but I really don't think you can beat the simplistic agricultural technology of the 'Banana' 2.5 Di lump.

Sills and arches are no problem as you can line them up and cut through both panels (old a new) together to get a good fit, wings need a slight fettle at the rear at the wing to door as they sit slightly proud of the door, but it doesn't matter whose wings you buy they all do unless you buy genuine ford.

are you sure you can carry all that load and still be legal? tyre rack and tyres plus body plus car must be close to 2 and a half ton and you must be towing another 2ton.

Glad to hear its within 5.5 ton train weight, thats what I have to play with with an LT that we are making into a beavertail and want to tow with Looks good in the grey.... cannot abide by banana engines though Have you ever got the axles weighed? (as in, see whether its within axle weights?) Just curious. R32 looks nice too

Small little update time, So because the old girl has done nearly 250k miles she seems to have picked up a different key for every lock! This has been getting right on my nerves since I've owned her. Even the driver door lock doesn't work so you have to get in through the passenger side. So I picked up this nice little box of goodies and now finally I can have at the most two keys!!! If it wasn't for the chip in the ignition I could have one key in total.

Good find fella, any ideas for the colour on the truck? Staying grey? Modern metallic colour perhaps?
