Good find fella, any ideas for the colour on the truck? Staying grey? Modern metallic colour perhaps? Thanks mate, now there's a thought. I was going to stay with the original colour scheme as it made her look less commercial but a metallic would be cool! Budget dependant lol

So a quick little update, I took the lockset up to the truck and decided to lose some of the keys that have been collected over the years. Here's the current keys as they stand, more keys than an Alcatraz jailer! So off came the boring old Transit plastic door cards. Underneath was a dusty mess, typical of a builders chassis cab. I guess you can see the original colour now, what a surprise that it used to be white! My nice new locks versus the crusty old ones that don't work. Then it was just a case of putting it all back together again. Now look at my new truck keys! Unfortunately I had to keep the red chip ignition key, unless anyone knows a way round it. I also had to keep the fuel cap key as it doesn't appear to be Ford and possibly after market. But 3 is better than how it was before. Cheers for looking and as always comments welcome.

fit the new barrel and tape the chipped key under the cowls near to the pats ring. the system is so curse word it wont stop any scrote pinching it anyway so you wont be losing anything on a security front.

true that. you can go to the trouble of bypassing the system in the fuse box and under the bonnet but not worth it for a bit of tape :-)

So after the simple but completely effective advice from l10mcu I noe have a much smaller bunch of keys. I did this!! Can you guess what it is yet! Now that means my keys for the truck look like this! So all is good with the truck keys now! Time to start cutting some metal out soon.

Gurnersimps1963 - Thanks mate, with the below update I'm definitely going to need a few more panels than I first thought. So it's another update, I first decided to strip down the front brakes, the front bearings are really good so I'm not planning to replace them. I cleaned up the spindles and then masked them off to protect them from the elements. The plan is to refurbish the calipers, once I remove the Pistons I can see the extent of what needs repairing/replacing. I'll also sand blast the caliper and carrier. I would like to also clean and restore the hubs as best as possible. I started to poke around with my screwdriver on the bodywork and unfortunately pieces just kept on falling off. Here is the underside of the nearside front wing. You can see why it failed the last MOT as it very close to the shock absorber top mount. Next I started to poke around the nearside front wing, it's toast! There was a good amount of body filler. This whole panel is going to be cut out. The inner wing was quite solid which was a nice surprise and will hopefully clean up well. Then it was round to the offside which unfortunately is not in a good state at all. It's much worse than the nearside. Here is the shock absorber top mount. Then it was on to the wheel arch which was literally made of filler alone. It all just broke away in my hands. Sadly the inner wing on this side was not in a good way at all. It is all eaten away and has also been made up of filler as well. Same story with the sill below the door. Wasn't the greatest news for me but until I've cut away all the rott I can see how bad it really is. Would be great to hear from those that have experienced worse or similar on Transits to see how bad mine is. All comments welcomed and appreciated.

That's not bad at all! Have a look on the transit forum for some real horror scenes... Panels are virtually all available as pattern parts at sensible prices either through local motor factors or off the internet, including part inner wings. Chances are it may want front arches (by the doors) and a pair of steps too. Unless you spend a load of cash anything else you buy will probably be just as bad if you start poking at it.
Dieselhead123 sells panels at a good price on the transit forum or the person who was selling a load of NOS panels on here had some as well.

Mercdan68 - I don't give up on anything mate so I'll suck it in and get on with the chopping.
Dodgerover - I was hoping someone might say that. I know you have plenty of experience with them. That link is a good one as Dieselhead123 seems to have most of the parts. I would just like to have an exploded diagram to see what parts are available so I know where and what to cut out.

Pretty normal welding for a mk5, no real surprises there, keep up to it and it will outlive any transit 10 years newer.

Joe90 - Cheers Bryan, I'm starting to realise that mine isn't actually that bad. Plus I know that these things just keep on going, so who am not to assist it! Anyway, time for a minor update. I needed to strip down the wings to get ready for cutting out. I also needed to grind the torx bolt heads from inside the wheelarches to remove the front bumper. However after a bit of grinding the bumper was free. The front cross member seems in great condition so I'm really pleased. As usual all comments welcome and appreciated. Thanks for looking.

It makes a change to see one that still has good steel inner wings to bolt the bumper on, instead of fresh air that they usually consist of, are the headlights dirty or faded?, if faded try and get some mk4 head lights as they are still glass lenses instead of plastic and look a lot better.

Joe90 - The headlights are a mixture of dirty and faded. They are the plastic lens type. I was going to flat them back with wet and dry and polish them up again. However if I manage to get some MK4 glass ones that would be ideal.

A bit of a thread revival but since I'm getting a bit handier with the welder I thought I would try and progress the old Transit. So today I decided to tackle the near side of the cab. Firstly I took off the passenger door which is in really good shape and doesn't appear rotten or full of filler. This gave me the room to drill out all the spot welds holding the front wing on. Incisive was looking pretty good, the big hole and the rott on the underside of the wheel arch around the turret top seems to be double skinned as it is in really good shape from the inside and it's a really thick solid mount. I drilled out all of the spot welds and got the front wing off of the cab. The wing came off nice and easily on this side, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Here you can see that the inner wing is gone, along with the wheel arch and the outer sill. I should hopefully make some progress on this as I'd really like to start using it again for practical reasons. I've found most of the panels I will need to replace so progress should be made. Thanks for looking.
