Just out of interest, this came up in the pub last night with a few mates who are into cars, so bear with me.
My mate has a B2 Audi 80 Sport, a first generation RX7 and an E46 320D as a daily, and his lass will only go in the E46. She reckons the retros are "unsafe, unreliable and embarrassing", and won't be seen in them, and is constantly on at him to be sensible and get rid.
My lass on the other hand doesn't really care. If it has a comfy passenger seat, a good heater and gets her to work and on holiday without breaking too often she's happy. She isn't interested or anything, but she just leaves me to it.
Thing is, amongst my other mates, SWMBO moaning about their cars seems pretty common. Is this a common theme?
Discuss.

My other half doesn't particularly like having a load of old cars kicking about the place, but whatever we decide to go out in she just gets in and isn't fussed.
Having a 4 year old kicking around is fantastic for approval - I show him the impending purchase, get agreement and he then informs Mam that this is what's happening. Result!
When we argue though, the cars do get brought into the argument because apparently they are all I care about!

I'm quite lucky in that she has got a Saab 9-3 Convertible, and my company car is a BMW E92, so my retro ride was pretty open to my choice when I sold the MK1 MX5. A couple of things I showed her did make her go 'I wouldn't be seen dead in that' (a couple of which I showed her just to get that reaction. Beige Morris Ital anyone?), but luckily she loves the Golf!

It's easier to get a new SWMBO than find a decent Ist Gen RX7..........My previous SWMBO didn't like any of the cars, she wouldn't even go with me when I blagged a (free!) long weekend in a brand new hotel on Monaco seafront, all I had to do was turn up in the MGB V8!
The present SWMBO drives a 205, rebuilds my MoJo when it slips and loves touring France in the Triumph.
Key words, previous and present!

Interesting to know. Mine just doesn't care at all, she never complains about me going to shows or spending time on forums, she just leaves me to it. His lass is just a total pain in the . It actually came up because he asked if anyone wanted the RX7. General consensus was keep the Wankel, ditch the lass! To be fair though, can't believe imagine petrolheads are easy to live with.

Speaking as a SWMBO the only issue that threatens our marital bliss is keeping the car in the garage , He thinks the Rover should live outside and the garage should be filled with bikes ( mountain and motor ) and "useful stuff" He presents me with from skips at work , and whilst out with the dog !

There are different gradations of 'petrolhead' though aren't there.
My Mrs. loves old cars. She's not a fanatic but she comes to the meets and checks stuff out. She loved going out in the Capri and she's always interested in whatever I'm checking out on Ebay. But then again, I don't currently have anything retro so there's not piles of car curse word lying around everywhere. When I do buy a fun car again I'll restrict myself to just one of them and it won't be a rotbox. It won't be a 'project' that sits in the front garden for 8 years gathering moss. I know 'petrolheads' whose houses and workplaces resemble scrap yards and to be fair, if the other half starts nagging I can see their point.

I think you make a good point there sharkattack, as with all relationship things there's give and take. I feel I'm lucky that my wife supports my petrol head obsessions. She realises that pottering about in the garage with the cars is what keeps me sane and accepts it of part of living with me. Equally I try to keep the car parts and mess in the garage, so it doesn't mess up the house too much and make it look like we live in a scrap yard. She likes the old cars that I buy generally, she likes the look of old car and stye style/fashion links, and doesn't like the look of modern cars but I don't think it really goes beyond the aesthetic. She likes the idea of owning a 'cute' old car one day, like a proper fiat 500, but it's never going to be a passion of hers and I can't see her wanting to get her hands dirty working on it! Unfortunately some partners will disagree, a friend of mine his partner wont go in his retro car, she's always joking about him getting rid of it, she likes new cars with all their mod cons. Again I think there's give and take there for the both of them and they don't let it get in the way of enjoying their time together

He's not that bad at all really, he runs a carpet fitting and supply business and the retros are kept in the unit surrounded by rolls of carpet, house is immaculate, he even curse word you if you don't use a coaster for your can!

I am very lucky.
My wife is as mad on cars as I am. She is happy as long as we have a sensible daily - currently, a 2003 2.0se VTEC Accord.
My main obsession is with old Fords but I like pretty much anything as does she. We both prefer auto's, We both want something with a V8 in after we have had our fun with my P100 (When its finshed!)
I am even allowed an 8ft square area downstairs in our open plan house (For tool cupboard, work bench etc) as I have no shed or garage.
She even insists on Santa Pod visits 6 or more times a year!

My other half quite likes the "old" cars, loves spotting them when out and about, likes the shows (in small doses). We have our daily/family car, which isn't particularly new at 13 years old but it does all the modern car things, blends in, easy, safe, take it places without worrying too much about it getting nicked or drawing attention etc
She really don't mind my old car fleet either as on the whole they're cheap motoring for me, and gives me something to do! Reliability has never been an issue, infact they work quite hard for their keep! She knows if I stop trusting a car as in it's started to "play up" I won't use it to go any further than walking distance from home until the issue is resolved. Even though we have breakdown cover. The one car is a member of the family now having owned it 14 years in Jan so she would never let that one go! She's not so keen on driving them though, and i'll give her that one because compared to our Passat they are hard work.

my ex used to moan about me cluttering up the driveway with my cars. they were always presentable but she just had a big beef over them making the house look unsightly.
my current gf doesn't really give a monkeys. she sits on the internet for hours on end looking at clothes and shoes, i do the same looking at cars. we've all got to have a hobby, right?

I am very lucky with my girlfriend, she is more than happy to be driven about in older cars, never moans about them, thinks its funny when it catches and scrapes over fairly normal things she is even encouraging me to buy a series land rover...i think she is definitely a keeper

I'm lucky also my wife has a mk4 Supra which is her daily. Before that it was an E34. She also does a lot of her own repairs etc on her cars. And what does she want for xmas this year??? Coilovers for her Supra. LoL I guess xmas day afternoon will be spent with us both outside freezing to death fitting them.

I'd rather loose by a mile cause I built my own car than win by an inch because someone else built it for me. Your car is your story, so don't let anyone else write the book.

My missus isn't in the least bit interested in old cars, but she has said that as long as I make sure she has a modern she likes, I can have, quote "as many old pieces of s**t as I want!!!! Result!!! Tend to go to shows without her too, she doesn't like spending all day looking round a field full of old cars....

I'm also very lucky. We met through having Skoda Rapids (the original rear engined beasts), she has had a plethora of classics, mk1 xr2, various minis, talbot samba cabrio, Lada estate, etc.
She currently has a mini clubman running a 1.8 k series, and has just parked up the Lexus ls400 (engine donor for my scimitar) and is plodding around in a 300tdi discovery at the minute.
We've both entered the Manx classic hill climb event, and she was the fastest woman on a couple events. All round petrol head, and foxy with it!

Reading some of these posts, I think I need to trade the other half in for somebody more compliant!
Just to add, my house doesn't look that much of a scrappy, (apart from the car parts stores in the Dining Room!) so not much room for her to whinge!!

I've forwarded this thread to him as advice I did the suspension top mounts on the 190 today, and although she didn't lift a finger or feign interest, she did make me a few coffees and a bacon sandwich
