Went and visited Forde of the forum last night (lovely fella, loads of nice bikes and a good laugh) and this jumped into the back of the van... a Suzuki AE50, fairly rare machine mostly made for the Canadian market, its a wee 50cc that puts out a cracking 6.5bhp. Feels like a spaceship to sit on, massive instrument panel, when you look over the front it looks like the whole thing is levitating as the front fairing comes all the way down over the front wheel, its ugly and 90s and cool as frig. Of course it needs some work, carb clean, tank clean and the piston is stuck... hopefully some diesel left sitting in the cylinder will help free it. Pictures! Hiding in the back of the van: In all its glory once we got it home, body work is amazing, completely original even down to the asbestos warning sticker, has one wee small hairline split in the front fairing, some glue or a desecrate cable tie will sort that. and original lucky strike Suzuki keyring... the don't make them like this anymore.

Stripped down to the frame, there was loads of wiring and one wee curse word of a screw that gave me grief, otherwise it came apart no problems, main pivot bolt has to come out and rear shock and that will be the engine and transmission removed completely for work to start. Panel condition is remarkable... I have not cleaned these at all Inside of the nose fairing Rear panel and seat Some warning stickers lol

So after sitting for a week with oil in the cylinder... thankfully the piston was at the top of the cylinder... it still would not budge, so off came the head and a nice block of wood down the cylinder and quite a few swift blows with the hammer the piston was free.
The cylinder seems grand, though ill give it a good clean inside (anyone recommend something cheap and cheerful to do this with?)
The piston however was black on top, the rings wont budge and it was rightly carbon'd down the sides, though not as far as the skirt. So I think for the sake of a tenner, ill replace the piston and rings and all the bits that go with it... but clean and keep the cylinder as its a rather nice 6 port number.
Head is grand too... carb is away to my buddy to be cleaned as well.
Finally moving forwards.

See if you can get a Japanese piston rather than a Chinese one, especially as this is the 'Full power' version, they're a lot lot better quality, likely to be £20 rather than £10 but worth every penny, also you might want to check the skirt heights and any piston porting as a UK piston is likely to be for the restricted one. Check the position of the ring stops as well, if the porting is significantly different, it'de be a shame to catch a ring in a port.

New Piston ordered, with rings, clip and a new gudgen pin... ill compare it with the old one and if they are too different, I will clean the old one and rebuild it with the new rings and pin etc.
How tight should the piston be to get back into the cylinder again once its rebuilt?

Snug fit, there is a lead in ground onto the bottom of the cylinder liner to make it easier to replace them. Can't remember the exact tolerances on a 2 stroke - check the gap on the ends of the rings before fitting them - put them into the barrel about an inch down from the top.

stagger the ring gaps and don't have the gaps going over ports either

Will do that... Jonny started cleaning my carb last night, sent me a picture of it in the ultra-sonic machine. Was bogging inside.

Well, new piston, rings, pin, clips, and pushed back into the cylinder, head on, back in the frame wired up, and kicked over, everything moves freely, loads of compression and a lovely spark, so hopefully ill get the carb on in the next day or too and some fuel in the tank, check everything over and fingers crossed start her up. If she runs, it will be straight for a new rear tire and bolting all the panels back on for a first ride round the block.

Just relised I never finished this thread... The AE50 is all back together now and doing her daily duty getting me back and forth to work For anyone interested her was her first proper start after an engine rebuild. She also got a little box *Snigger* Also tidied up and bits and pieces painted for now... plan on some smaller indicators on the back and maybe a wheel colour change again.

I have an owners handbook for one of these, you can have it for the price of postage if you haven't already got one.

Hi, does anyone have a link to manuals for the AE50?
I've recently bought an officially Green, but looks like it's Blue '97 AE50. I also have an '85 Honda Vision 50cc. I bought the AE50 on impulse after reading that it has about 2x the BHP of the Honda. I was actually looking for an 80cc Honda Vision but they were all too expensive so thought that I'd check out the AE50 and see if it will manage 40 mph. Not had a chance to ride it on the road yet, but had it running and have bought some new rollers for the variator as the old ones were really worn. From what I've managed to work out from the MOT history, looks like it's been in storage for about 10 years. I'm planning to do a bit of work on it over the winter, so having the manual would be of great help.

Good to know about the top speed, it's what I was hoping. I've put new rollers in the variator and will try to find somewhere to test the speed over the next few weeks. Although it's 20 years old & I can't be totally sure, I think the 7500 miles is probably genuine (the miles count rolls over after 9999) based on how clean things are inside the casing. There was no spacer in the variator which is the normal way to restrict these engines and the casing screws show signs of being out. The belt goes right to the top of the variator with the engine revved on the stand. Like the OP, I'm going to tidy up the rear lamp & indicators, shame you can't get the original lamps that were built in under the seat. Anyone with manuals, please let me know. Thanks

Thanks Yeah the ae is actually one of the more powerful 50ccs I'd expect 45+ but see how it goes. Yeah I would say that's genuine miles, I buy lots of scooters and mopeds and you find a lot with very low mileage as people bought them but never really used them much.

Thought that I'd share a tip I came across for difficult starting after a few days. Seems that if you blow into the carb vent tube, it raises the float chamber pressure enough to force some fuel into the jets even though the air comes straight out of the overflow. This has worked for me on the AE50 a couple of times, apparently it's a common problem when they're left standing for a while and get a sulk on. Can't claim the credit for this, I found it on Moped Army.
Am still on the lookout for manuals so if anyone has one I'll gladly pay postage and donate some dosh to charity (or to the sender).
