I was considering buying a small cabrio now that my Audi has been written off, however, I've recently been looking at Jaguar S Types, well within my budget now and they tick all my toys boxes that a Mazda or MG wouldn't. So, what am I missing, anything I should look out for or any models to avoid? I'm either going to get a Sport or... a diesel?!

My nan had one a few years back and thought it was brill...sadly that's all I really have to offer. If I were you, I'd go a little OTT and get the big fat V8 R version.

I've been doing some reading up on the engines and it seems it a heavily modified version of the ford engine. Well the only part that's the same is the block. The jag version comes with verible valve timing to similar to Hondas v tec system.

hmm, I believe with the diesel versions, problems with the intercooler can lead to an overrun condition which is not good at all for the engine, happened to my Dads and blew his engine and I've heard of another one that happened to, my Dad's was 3 months out of warrenty when it happened to his and Jaguar agreed to pay 3 quarters of the price to get it fixed. Ace car for the price of them, depreciation on them is mental so reasonable ones are very affordable now, my Dad's about decided he's not going to get rid of his for a VERY long time now as he'd never sell it for what he feels its worth and he really likes it.

I had a 55 2006 2.7XS as my daily for 4 years and i still miss it. I took it from 30k miles to 80k and replaced it with an Audi Cab which I've regretted ever since. Would have gone for an XF but I prefer the S-Type looks - proper cars always have round lights. Post 2004 cars are face lifted and are far better as a lot of the annoying issues were sorted, they also have all the toys on them as people were waiting for the XF to break cover. The Sport is dechromed and has lower sports suspension from the factory. XS is the same car but with the dealer fit optional extra which from memory was ~£3.5k. They're heavy cars and my used to chomp through front tyres at an alarming rate until I got the tracking redone. I had no significant problems other than parking sensors which failed continuously to the point where I pulled the fuse and learn to park properly lol and the fuel filler latch broke which is common. The front on the XS is very low and you will damage the valance and undertray if you are not careful. The diesel is 205bhp and is plenty fast for normal road use. It ran a best of 16.53 at Santa Pod and in normal city driving I'd get around 33mpg and up to 44mpg on a long run. I did see 9mpg on a journey back home from Brecon. Jag wheels are also apparently pretty soft and can warp fairly easily. Mine had mercury's which were strong but a curse word to clean properly and were due a refurb. Find a good local Jag independent garage and you'll be very happy man and if you're looking for a later diesel bear in mind anything registered after 23rd march 2006 is £450 tax. I'd definitely have another one but after I've scratch my XJS itch Suppose I should include some pictures

All I know about S-Type's is that there's a "murdered out" one that parks near me and I always slow down to walk past it and take it in. Looks awesome.
Google throws up some right mingers so I'll not bother with any pics!

^ That's a nice XS dan. We've had quite a few of these at my work, always been good and I've really taken a liking to them - particularly the XS. One thing we always get with Jags is locking wheel nut grief. They are an absolute curse word to drill out when they go so if you've got the standard Jag ones on there get them swapped out ASAP! Other thing with the Diesels we've had is cat and dpf trouble, injectors, turbos, DMF etc etc - can get expensive quickly. Other than that they seem pretty good.

The XS has the lovely bodykit and bentley style mesh grilles. normal s type: s type XS: Pretty sure it also has slightly shorter, stiffer springs, they are definitely far more prone to catching on speedbumps.

Is it just a term for the sport then? The ones that have the colour coded grills?

sort of, the sport has the colour coded vertical slatted grill and was effectively succeeded by the XS which has the dealer fit exterior pack with the stainless mesh. Both have the sports suspension.
They are low at the front. If you look at the valance of my car in the santa pod shot you'll see the cable ties holding the undertray on lol
DPF can be a problem if but I used to do a lot of long motorway journeys so it was never a issue. This used to catch out the old boys who only use their car to to get the paper.

My stepdad had an s-type r a couple of years ago, it literally flew us to the Nurburgring we cruised at 145 with ease on the autobahn. Absolute monster of a car, do-not know why he sold it and got a 3.0 m sport z4 coupe. The s-type had all the chrome bits done in black (same as the car) with anthracite wheels. This is the only photo of it I have at the moment from when we pitched up the tent at the ring. Massive brakes, honking v8 with a supercharger and magnetic suspension for a great ride. What's not to love?
