I was going to put this in the Youtube thread but thought this event really deserved its own thread. The video below is of the 1972 running of the King Edward Park Hillclimb (now known as the Mattara Hillclimb).
Pretty spectacular, no? The interesting point here is how many current (at the time) race cars where in use. The yellow GT Falcon would've been nearly brand new, and the LJ Torana would win Bathurst that year in the hands of Peter Brock, giving him the first of his 9 wins at Mount Panorama. F5000 cars are present as well.
Sadly the calibre of cars is not as high these days, with mainly older cars being run, along with lots of street registered cars. Still a fantastic event and really little has changed since those days. Here is a video of last years event for comparison:
The main difference is that the start had to be moved further up the hill due to rock slides in what was the pit area for the 1972 race. Event the white temporary guard rails after the chicane are the same ones used back in 1972! There are murmurs that our club (MG Car Club Newcastle)won't run the event in 2014 due to trouble finding volunteers, issues with the local council (and local residents) and the fact that our permanent course has been thoroughly upgraded, but that seems to happen every year so we shall see what transpires. I for one hope it continues as do a large number of locals.
Hope you guys enjoyed this, its making me want to get out on the spanners!
Edit: can't get the videos to embed, you'll have to click through sorry!
