Just a thought along the way. Do we own one particular retro vehicle often due to availability and cost but really desire an equivalent. I'm happy with my Vitara Special and do not desire an early land rover but do others drive a sierra and wish it was a cosworth or a metro and wish it was a 6r4 ? Is this what fuels our appetite for modifying retros ? Do we all look at our base model and think well if i poach some bits of the higher spec equivalent ill be happy until i might get the opportunity to own the real deal.

Intresting thought. I suppose everyone desires a top end version of a car, but as you say, money has a lot to do with it. Saying that, you can have just as much fun with a base model if you improve it as your hobby.

Not me xD
i have no desire to own a cossie despite the fact that i drive a 2.0 sierra saloon. i even like it low-spec because i don't have to worry about stuff like the window motor breaking xD
and I'm having too much fun driving it grandad style !! (got it from my grandad, dunno why I'm asuming he drove it slow though heh) just cruising arraound town a bit faster than a snail xD
that being said theres still always some sort of mod in my head, just not upping it to a "better" model because i love the one i have !

Suppose it depends on the car we have a base model Scimitar SST that will not get adapted, but the GTC and Coupe are very much modified, but not as a better specked model. I suppose the C is what would have come next with a bit of what I want from it. The coupe is a very different animal it's the creation one mans idea to make the car stand out and it does!

I'm never satisfied. There again I have a diagnosed mental health problem which might explain why I've owned over 100 cars ! Lack of finances virtually always dictates I can only afford the base model yet drool after some of the "extras" on the higher specs. For example our Skoda Fabia has manual windows and no central locking - both of which are something I miss from the Mondeo it replaces. When I had older cars, that were plentiful in scrapyards, I'd swop things like instrument clusters over to get a rev counter etc. With modern cars though not so easy with the miles of cables and fittings needed hence not upgrading the Skoda. Virtually every car I've owned I've either altered or wanted a different spec model at some time or other. Might just be a better stereo or piece of trim but as I say I'm never satisfied.

True, but even the top end models are never enough. there aren't many Scooby's Evo's M3's etc, that haven't had brake upgrades, bigger turbo's, carbon, different wheels you name it. So even the top end versions can be made into a car that the factory never offered. They just have a lot better stuff as a starting point.

My Capri "was" just a laser, i never hankered after a 2.8 injection because mild mods to a 2ltr pinto makes it just as quick, though its not really a laser anymore with all the mods
N I am really happy with the 2ltr Saph, its been fairly reliable, its not quick, but it's not painfully slow and its more reliable than a cossie

Good question.
I will start with, sorry for non retro post:
Ive had my Golf for just over a year and while it would be nice to do things to it, like it would be nice to have a remap/exhaust with 270bhp, some 18" BBS, poly bushes & coilovers, I'm just not that fussed becuase it is a very complete car as it is. Plus if I make it any faster it will be even more disapointing as you cant drive it to it's limits safely/legally like you can with say a 1.4.
Whereas I have had the beetle 2 months or something like that & cant help think it would be awesome with a 2.8 V6 and TT suspension/brakes and some nice rims, if I had bought a 1.8t Sport I'm not sure I would be bothered about changing anything.
Ive had lot's of base spec car's and always wanted extra's from the higher model, but when you get the higher spec model, what can you do to make it better? Duno, confused myself now. Off to ebay.

Never, i own my 911T because i wanted to make it my own and create something the factory didn't, bespoke to me.
Without being shouted at for ruining an RS
I couldn't afford an RS/RSR/ST etc. if i tried, but i wouldn't part ways with my 911t for anything else.

reckon most people are in agreement modding a base model into something the manufacturer never made is more fun

I buy cars purely on whether it floats me boat or not. I've got a Mk2 8v Golf GTI, I really fancied a Mk2 and I'd have gladly bought a Driver, CL or a Jetta etc. I just happened to find a Mk2 near to me for a good price which needed work and it just happened to be an 8v GTI (I've added my own touches to make it my own) Before that, I owned a Mk2 Metro City which was pov spec but it had character and I loved it and made it my own. There are a lot of people who settle for "lower range" models or alternatives because they can't afford their Mexicos, splitscreens, G60's etc etc etc. I'm not one of those.

I needed a new car, and wanted something retro. I stumbled across the Granada, I could afford it and the seller was happy to do a deal on my modern. I don't intend modifying it, because it's in such great condition. But then again, is it what I always wanted? Definitely not, but the prices of what I do want have escalated so much, or are so rarely available, that I'll make do. There are a lot worse cars to drive!

i m happy to tinker with what i bought in effect a base model because i can have the unique vehicle the manufacturer wouldnt build. With a base model worth under a thousand ( two weeks holiday in costa muchness )in terms of what people spend money on i get the enjoyment and I'm not interfering with any retro protocol ie upsetting the anorak gang. Having said that if i get my dream retro a porsche 911 2.7 ill leave it as it is ( maybe ).

I think its just as worthy to modify a top end model, as much as a base one.it just usually comes down to money.

Sometimes I think I'd like one of my Princesses to be a Lotus in disguise. Just sometimes. Man a Lotus Princess, if it was subtle enough it could cause so much head scratching and beard stroking hanging around at serious classic shows and such like.
