This is my new daily. Bought off ebay just 5mins from my house. Its a 1990 Carina 1.6gl. Dull but cheap to run, and hopefully very reliable. With just 32k on the clock, and in immaculate condition. The owner died in 2002, and it sat in his heated garage on blocks ever since. The rear seat has never been sat it, the paint is perfect, just a few chips on the bonnet. Everything works, including the cassette player, like new. Even the plastic protectors for the door cards have never been removed. Seemed a shame to rip out the cassette based stereo, so I dug in the cupboard and found some of my old cassettes. Toyota didn't scimp on the spec, the speakers are good quality. Considering the cars age, the spec of the car is great; ie lumber support, electric sunroof, wing mirrors etc etc. The underside of the shell is like new. To keep it that way I've covered in with Dinitrol. Mechanically, I fitted a rear wheel cylinder, as it was seized, replaced the brake fluid, done the oil, fresh air filter to replace the original, fresh timing belt, rotor arm and dizy cap. The tyres were the originals, so I fitted some winter tyres to the narrow steels for the Scottish salting season, and bought a set of Cades Eros rims for the rest of the year. I think they fill the arches nicely, and the polished lips suits the style of the car in my opinion. The car joins my 1981 VW camper, and my 64 beetls. Just need to find a retro ride to replace my wife's modern car. Would have loved a RWD Carina, but I'd rather have a minter, and compromise on the model. Well happy with it. Costs wise its buttons compare to my previous car, a Scooby WRX. The insurance for the Carina was only £142! and the mpg is somewhat better . Only problem is getting used to the indicator being on the right lever instead of the left. Very frustrating using the wipers to indicate direction changes!!

Wow, nice! These are great, my dad has a later injection model of this, just rolled past 300.000km. He bought it with 128.000km on the clocks. Serviced it regularly, replaced the exhaust 2 times, and recently the clutch. That was it. MEGA reliable and they drive really nice!

The ride is comfort plus, but at my age, and considering the poor roads round here thats a good thing. I never said I paid £2k. It was less than that. Worth ever penny I paid, as its like new. Like the motor sport look, but hate the lack of suspension travel!

Two years have passed since I last posted, where has the time gone! And the reason why, is basically cause its doing exactly what I wanted. Giving me little hassle as a daily. However, there is a few things. The biggest pain in the neck has been oil leaks. First the distributor. I had to buy a second hand one off ebay. My brother stripped it and replaced the inner seal and it was switched over with the original. I had to switch the electrical components across. My brother then did the same to the original. Then I refitted the original. But it still leaked despite a fresh seal to the head. In then end I had to use a thin coat of hylomar, and that sort that. Except it didn't cause the rocker cover was now leaking! With that replaced, the leaks stopped. The only other problem, was the clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder, which both had internal seal failure, resulting in my having to avoid sitting with my foot on the clutch for too long. Neither was too hard to replace, although the replacement master cylinder was a bit of a fiddle, because one of the metal pipes had to attach to the side of the replacement one rather than on the top. Apart from that it has been great. On a holiday to Cumbria, with 1.6l carb engine managed to deliver a stunning 45.6mpg over the period of a week. Was well happy with that. The only other thing is the cassette player is now faulty. It will only play cassettes at fast forward speed. Any ideas?

A wee update is required. I sold the Camper back in May, and it trundled off to North East of England. so now I had some cash. For ages I've wanted a MK1 Golf. I've had one before, but it needed too much work and at the time I was lacking in resources, and more importantly time, so it was sold on. However, finding a decent mk1 is not easy. I also wanted a 5 door model with the big block, as I have family to run around. Nothing came up that ticked the boxes. But then I spotted a mk2 GL with just 15k on the clock. So I compromised and bought it. Being a GL, it came with the 1.8l engine with progressive carb and best of all power steering, well, I'm getting on a bit. That meant I could fit a wider set of rims without having to join a gym. To here it is The car was stock when I bought it. But it let down the car a bit so I went for a set of japanese racing alloys. The suspension has been switched for Eiback springs and Bilstein B4s. They give a great ride, and tighten up the stock rolly polly handling a treat. Inside its lovely and original, bar my prototipo. The seats are minted, the only niggle is the dash has a big crack in it. But I got a spare one with the car. But that can wait for now. The first jobs were to replace the seized thermostat. A job that is made more tricky by the power steering pump being right in the way. still sacrifices have to be made. Next up was the timing belt, and I decided to buy new allen headed socket bolts to replace the rusty original ones. Fortunately they all came out. Once I had sorted this I got it back on the road. But only managed a few miles before the Pierberg carb starting living up to its reputation of being a real pain in the RS. No wonder they call it a pooberg. With 5 aux add ons that can go wrong, its a nuisance. Despite the expense I splashed out on a new weber replacement, with its simple manual choke. It really did transform the car. For an aftermarket kit, it really is very well engineered. The only niggle is the angle of the bracket that holds the throttle cable is slightly off, meaning the that cable sits at angle exiting the conduit. I've made a bracket that bolts to the rocker cover than supports it and keeps it in line. However, I still needed to fit a stronger throttle return spring as the one supplied is too week to return the throttle promptly. Next task is to replace the main bush for the gear change, its a bit sloppy and change the engine oil. I've been through all the brakes, and replaced the pads and disks. The pedal feel is not the greatest (compared to the Carina), but it seems to work okay. In the longer term I'll do the front wishbones, and pull the rear axle to clean it up and do the bushes, but for mow they are fine. Once the basic mechanics are sorted, I plan to tidy up the shell. They are a few areas of surface rust underneath that need nipping in the bud. Also the front slam panel could do with a trip to the powercoaters. The only bad bit of rust is the leading edge of a front wing, thats started to disolve but the wing is easy saveable.

I have some oil leaks (high up on the engine) and was thinking Cam Cover... will look at Dizzy though, now ..... agreed on MPG, 41 for me [but needs a tune-up] OVIMOR

Nice carina, good color. I would recommend using a genuine rocket gasket for the main seal and the ones under the nuts. The cheap ones don't last. You can still get a new o ring for the dizzy to head, but if the dizzy is leaking from the shaft inside the dizzy you have to get creative.
