I have an old Ford Ranger that I use to take my motorbike to drag race events, its a great old work horse but the time has come to sell it on and get a van.
I need something that will carry 2 motorbikes, transit size.
Is there anyone who is clued up on vans that can give me some advice on what to get?
My budget is around £1500

at your money transits or iveco dailys are prob your best bet. if an iveco the 2.3 is more economical but make sure the diff isnt noisy as its not a easy fix. transits you cant go wrong with they just like to rust

I like the VWs, but the vw scene has pushed up the prices too high, people are now buying these when they can't afford an old camper, even basic ones are sold with the tag "surf bus" sometimes. I have a 56 plate sprinter for work, and it to honest its curse word, its always breaking down, we used to have older ones and they seemed loads better. don't know much about the Renault Traffics to be honest. I used to have an Iveco turbo daily 10 years ago at work, that was a good van, just had to get used to the weird gearbox.

I have heard guys saying the vivaro is decent, dunno if its in the price range though. I run a new shape berlingo, its a bit small but a great runner and near 50mpg

I don't think I would get 2 bikes in a berlingo. We have a few movanos at work too, not as comfortable as a sprinter, but they drive ok, and we only really get brake problems with those vans. I think the vivaro is the smaller version.
Also does anyone know if any vans are better/worse than others for insurance. I got a quote today for a transit short wheel base and it was £358 a year fully comp which I thought was pretty good.

I run a VW T4 as a daily and it is pricey to insure and the scene tax is HUGE (I paid £900, have seen identical spec/ year worse condition vans advertised at £3.5k +!!!) Transits are mechanicaly brilliant but rot like crazy -Movana/Traffic/Master type thing are nice to drive but can be expensive when they go wrong.
would a smaller van and a 2 bike trailer be any good?

Richard, I don't like trailers, had one in the past and its ok for small distances. I have a jag and the missus has a bmw so got perfect towing cars, but with doing big distance up and down the motorway its so much easier with a van, higher cruising speeds due to the 60mph trailer motorway speed. Plus they are dry and safe, cant fall over right over and off the side like they can in a truck bed or on a trailer.

VW LT, same shell as the sprinter but superior VW running gear and no Transporter Scene tax.

If it was me I would get an ex rac transit. They pop up quite often on ebay and the clasifieds. They are rear wheel drive have a liftback rear door for a bit of shelter and also have extra wiring in the back for hooking up power inverters and trickle chargers. very handy indeed. They also have a higher towing capacity.

VW LT, same shell as the sprinter but superior VW running gear and no Transporter Scene tax. . No. Exactly the same running gear with a way more fragile engine. Renault master/vauxhall movano is probably the most reliable of all those listed so far. They're prone for front wheel bearings and you won't get more than 100k out of the gearbox though. If it was me, I'd be looking for a hiace.

I think you answered your own question when you said Transit sized get a Transit mate.My new work van is a leased VW Transporter and I hate it,it was lethal in the snow we carry a 50 gallon water tank behind the bulkhead dunno if it's upset the balance no traction and just wants to go in a straight line. Before that we had Merc Vito's they seem to eat tyres but other than that it was OK, we've got a 52 plate Transit as a spare van last time I used it it was using half the diesel that the Merc and VW used on the same runs
