Evening all, After a bit of searching for a cheap run around, I've happened upon a 1998 Toyota Starlet 1.3i. I've never owned or even driven a Toyota, but from a quick google they seem to get very good reviews. I guess I'm asking if they are up to 250miles a week? Reliability? Common faults? And because I don't worship the devil, here are some pictures for your trouble;

Great little car's, I frequently abused (I'm talking 12hrs on the rev limiter, full throttle clutch drops) the curse word out of my mums company starlet and it never broke.
I don't think 250 miles a week would give one much trouble
Steering is very light on them and they could do with slightly stiffer suspension
From what I can tell the main issue they have is rusty sills.

I had a Starlet GT turbo for a while. Was typical Japanese car. Bit bland, bit plasticky inside but bullet proof reliable and very economical even with a lead footed youth driving!

Thanks chaps, this gives me hope.
It'll only be a stop gap for a few months, so I'm not expecting it to last me a lifetime.
Anything they are prone to?

I bought this for my daughter two years ago The first MOT we put it through it failed on a wiper blade and dodgy sunvisors, both piddly fixes and, today, it went for its second MOT under her ownership and passed. It cost a whole £370, its now done 140,000 miles and is fabulous. Apart from normal wear and tear its needed no money spent on it. Not bad for a little 1000cc car. I never cared much for old Toyotas, now i cannot speak highly enough of them. There are a couple on flea bay at the mo that are dirt cheap. Easy to maintain, good build quality, built to last and different to the usual tat. Total value for money.

I curse word you not, i have gas converted a few, standard and turbo varieties. I had a bloke with a turbo jobby. Gas converted it. Big commute like 200+ miles a day, so it made sense for him. First year, no problem. Already paid for itself. Year 2 still no problems but it was getting tired. Another year up to 400+k by now. Had done a gearbox and a few other bits and bats nothing massively worrying. He put it in the auction. And couldn't find another any good so bought a Diahatsu YRv turbo. Into year 1. No problems so far, every now and then its getting an intermittent missfire on gas and petrol. So he was going to change the plugs and get back to me if it didn't solve it. About 3 months ago. Not heard from him yet. Bloody hell is that thing a rattle box. No where near the build quality of the starlet. But its already paid for itself ! 45k so far.

This feedback is encouraging, keep it coming folks.
The car in question is the 1.3 non turbo. Nothing exciting, but a very tidy little car. 6 or 7 previous is the only red flag i've seen so far.

I had mine 10 years and I loved it Not amazingly reliable if given permanent hell but still a good economical car if in standard form. Here's a few of mine in Japanese performance this month I just sold it and am trying integras out now but the starlets are amazing fun Well damn, I didn't notice till I read your reply again that this was your car. Very cool. What's the opposite of subtle? ;D

I've just bought an ep91 sportif to use while I repanel my ado16. Best £200 I ever spent tbh. Its been right royally abused in my ownership, done 4.5 k in 5 weeks, averaged 42ish mpg and not complained once. They're also damn quick for what they are, and a hoot to drive after you've lopped two coils off the springs so they don't constantly feel like they're going to fall over if you look at a corner. mines a 1998 car on 120k

As a runaround car they are incredible, I purchased one that had already done nearly 180000 miles, it became my runabout, my rally car, my work van and my b road blaster, it never once used a drop of oil or water and it got the life wrung out of it on every journey. I literally cannot give any higher recommendation of any small car than a starlet! My old build thread: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=128804Oh, then i sold it cheap to a mate who treated it even worse and she's still thriving and surviving haha, very nearly 200k now!
