I'm partial to these:

for exhaust suspension, as they allow you to run the exhaust millimeters from the body and get it exactly where you want it.
Depending on the setup they add a bit of cabin noise though, and require a welder to install.

In regards to your question i've bent quite a few exhaust hangers into shape without any bigger mishaps, one ripped straight out of a rusted muffler though.
But if yours is in good shape I wouldn't sweat it. Obviously if you've got a oxy torch it wont do any harm to use it.

There are also several models of exhaust hangers, you could try some smaller ones. There are even powerflex brand polyurethane ones if you want something stiffer.
