I drive a lot of "legend" cars at work and find a lot of them overated and more rated on internet hype/status rather than the individual car. I realise that driver taste is variable as music taste. sometimes a car is rated by its works rally version rather than the lame road car but this goes unnoticed, some were just good in their day. Examples for me (I'm not going to write the bad ones as it may offend owners) The hairdressers cars - Many used to label the MX5 as nothing more than a hairdresser car, it is indeed a drivers car. The (not retro.. ) Z3 which I find basicaly described as "sh*T" by most car fans, I feel this is based on its looks as I find it a better driving machine (in 2.8/3.2 form) than the likes of UR quattro/audi S2/ 944 968 ect... (infact the 968 and E30 m3 bored me) boxster - rated low my most car guys - better chassis than a 911 imo and it amazes me how the prices are so far from a 996 for such a similar car. Please post underated drivers cars, one that sticks in my mind Rover vitesse Sd1, I admit the suspension and exhaust were not stock but I just could not put it down! another was a lotus elan sprint, not realy underated but shoked me with what a weapon it was, given its age. img542.imageshack.us/img542/4855/roversd1vitesse08.jpg [/img]

The Fiat Cinquecento Sporting springs to mind. Seen by many as a bit of a joke (especially since The Inbetweeners) and at best a novelty. Even in standard form it's a capable little micro hatch and the little 1100cc engine propels it along nicely. Combine that with go-kart handling and to me the humble little Cinquecento is far closer to being a 'modern' day successor to the original Mini than anything that has come since.

Jaguar XJ40 (especially the post 93 cars) , absolutely a mega bargain to buy, lovely ride and handling, sufficiently fast, reliability issues had been sorted out, not to terrible on fuel, comes with built in lows and "bad guy" coolness.
Bad points are they can rot underneath pretty badly although they are at the age now when most of the bad ones are on the way out, some parts cost millions of quids although this is offset by the ability to buy a whole car for spares for about 300 quid, and manuals are hard to find.
They didn't bring in the supercharged engine in the XJ40 shape, but you can get the V12 which had 318bhp and sounds fappin gorgeous if you remove some exhaust boxes.
X300 which followed on is also a great car, less underrated and more expensive though.

Co-sign on the Vitesse. As ugly as it really is i always thought it had heaps of potential if treated right, plus, with the "mighty" Rover V8, how can you go wrong....

Gonna cop some serious flak here but the Volvo 400 series. Even the turbos are cheap and can be surprisingly nippy with an R237 \ Pruen fuelling chip.
Sadly they rust like curse word and most R5GTT types cut 'em up for the engines.

Fiat Barchetta. Throw all the tedious "OMGWRONGWHEELDRIVE" comments out of the window, get behind the wheel of one give it the benefit of the doubt. I did just that and loved every mile of it. It drives great (like *LOTS* of fun) and has a hell of a lot more character than most other cars of its class. Dare I say even the MX5? It's certainly a close call. Having owned one for about three years (and covering a lot of miles including some cross-continental bashing in it with the GF) then having a succession of MX5's, I actually think I'd take another Barchetta over the Mazda if looking for another 2 seat roadster. There, I've said it! Channel crossing: Somewhere in mid-France I think? Belgium The only shot in Germany with the car in it! The GF LOVED the Barchetta. So did I. After having used it pretty much solid for over a year before allowing it a break and then occasional use, I'd say it makes a better daily than an MX5.

+1 for the Barchetta Also the Multipla. Not retro yet, but I've always had a thing for the Suzuki Swift And the new Panda (I quite really fancy a 100hp) Also not retro, the gen 3 MR2 is often overlooked FWD Corollas. SEAT Cordoba Gti Xsara VTS The list is endless! I could even say that both of my cars are underrated, the Mk2 Polo and the Alfa 155

Don't we all love and drive underrated cars on here? Underrated? Yes! It drives very good, nice performance/ economy balance and it oozes 80's yuppie digital lifestyle. The first fwd Volvo, too. But still a badly build car. And we all love a Guilia 105, but a Berlina is a lot less loved. Although it is in many ways the better car (bigger and powerfull engines). Crispy styling courtesy by Bertone. It is better build than the French competition and inside lacks a bit of flair. But owning this is a utter pleasance due to its reliabilty.

Gonna cop some serious flak here but the Volvo 400 series. Even the turbos are cheap and can be surprisingly nippy with an R237 \ Pruen fuelling chip. Serious flak? I doubt it, I loved my Volvo 480 Turbo, okay the electrics are a bit dicky and the handling isn't amazing. But they are great fun to drive, the cabin is lovely place to be and Pruen chip livens them up no end! Anyway my vote for underrated vehicle might not be that retro but they have serious untapped potential! It's the humble Vauxhall Omega.... Often berated for being a bland, boring, fat blokes motor, which didn't match its rivals. I personally quite like the styling, the handling and steering is great they feel really predicable and fun to drive, yes they got a bad image but that doesn't mean it's a bad car, the few I've driven match an E39 5 series in terms of comfort and equipment. Plus they do this exceptionally well......

My vote for underated car goes to my old granada. Fantastic car but got mocked for being a fat sierra and having the wrong cosworth engine in it.

Well my own car springs to mind. Everyone says the Golf iswhat changed the hot hatch craze but VW at the time has the dilemma of releasing the Golf and Scirocco at the same time and decided to go for the rocco first.....so my view is it wasn't the Golf that should've changed it IMHO

Looking here at whats posted, its all about image, For me the overated are the big image cars, I think people ofen buy them in a hop to be cool.
The cars posted are bargains for the people who don't care what people think.
To me an underated car is when you tell your mates your buying one and they take the p1ss, you let them have a go and they want one too.
The overated have the oppersite effect, you jump in and wonder what all the fuss is about, is this all it does? glad I didnt waste ££££ on one of these...
I'm keen to try all of the above (already owned a few) status or not!

I've had endless fun in my Cinquecento Sporting, it's so chuckable and actually well built. So why am I selling it?
Micra 1.3 more door. That's why.

The Old Vauxhall Victors and Ventora's Viva's etc, right up to the Monza's And the late attempts by Rover to revive the MG marque by doing the Montego, Maestro etc all of which are now thin on the ground, and in my eyes superb
