The Dolomite lends itself to quite a few styling possibilities making it one i'd buy if only there were any in my area. There used to be a juiced one, that i hear is making a comeback, that was literally laying sills and rolling on ATS, then of course you could go classic rally car, simple slam and wheels, or go mad poking dished stretched and be kool in any of the mentioned. Deffo not the only car capable of wearing diffrent styles, but still giving it extra points.

Mazda RX7. Genuinely fast (Turbo and non-Turbo!) and capable car with such a unique powerplant. So much engineering went into these cars to compete with the likes of the Porsche 944 just goes to show that no expense was spared. Passive rear steering, 50/50 weight distribution, speed sensitive steering rack, even the wheel jack was made from alloy! Yes they are expensive to run but mine was cheap to buy so that kinda makes up for it. RWD, Turbo and lightweight

I really liked my mk2 MR2. I had the curse word taken out of me bu my mates for buying it, mine was a 92 revision 2 so had slightly better brakes than the earlier ones. I found it had the best driving position for me of any car I have driven to date, everything was in the right place. Once I had a good set of new tyres fitted the handling was great even in the wet. With poor tyres on though it was a bit of a handfull in the rain.

later ford KAs (2003-3008) in good spec, weighs nothing, grips like mad, decent power, cheap insurance, rapid around town, can pick them up for beer money. The engines in the later ones are bullet proof and mechanical bits are cheap and easy to replace. Even biodegradable..... ;D
[edit: realised that's not very Retro, so buy a 1999 one and shove in the later engine, does that count?]

Properly underrated, everybody knows of the T5s that were around at the time, but for whatever reason these slipped under the radar. This one is in 2.3T flavour so 200bhp as standard, internals on the B234 engine good for 400bhp out the factory, Saab really knew how to engineer. Can be picked up for less than £500 now (how could I resist?!) and has surprised more than a few people!

+1 for the barchetta - a lot of style for the money I had one for a couple of years, nothing really went wrong. I'm fairly sure the other Fiat and even Alfa twin spark motors fit the gearbox too

The Fiat Cinquecento Sporting springs to mind. Seen by many as a bit of a joke (especially since The Inbetweeners) and at best a novelty. Even in standard form it's a capable little micro hatch and the little 1100cc engine propels it along nicely. Combine that with go-kart handling and to me the humble little Cinquecento is far closer to being a 'modern' day successor to the original Mini than anything that has come since. another vote for the Cinq loved mine and if i had the space would love another

I'm putting up the Ford Cougar as a very underated car It maybe a Mondeo in a posh frock, but how is that a bad thing? Running either 2ltr Zetec or 2.5 V6 Duratec they are a comfy, very well equipped and cheap car It's not a powerfull car with around 170bhp from the v6,but it's plenty for today's roads and they are easy enough to uprate using Mondeo ST parts. Tuners are now getting silly figures from the Zetec engine once turbocharged too. Only real bugbear with them are the front suspension wishbones which are ST Mondeo parts.No-one makes them as Pattern parts due to the low number of cars sold by Ford so genuine parts are the only option.

I would have to nominate the 4th Gen Celica (st162). Always overshadowed by its GT4 rally version and a little forgotten but it really shouldn't be. Like a few of the cars here, ignore the wrong wheel drive argument. It handles and pulls great around the twisties and in original road tests from Road and Track they said it kept up with the rear drive RX7 with a good driver behind the wheel. I've owned many including the GT4 version but have kept my front wheel drive one for years. Never let me down (even if I leave it for months) and is always lovely to drive. 147bhp, electric/power everything, heated everything, air con/climate control, cruise control. ABS if you want it and a vent on the steering wheel column to cool your balls. ;D

Renault 21 turbo, overshadowed by the Cosworth at the time, luxurious, 4 door daily pushing 175bhp, with leather as standard. The boxy shape gave nothing away.

Another vote for the renault 21 turbo, very underrated and pretty quick standard.
Renault 9 & 11 turbo's, cheaper and better handling than a r5gtt. 9 turbo is super rare and its hard to find a decent 11t
309 gti were good too, i had an mi16v converted one, went well with good handling to match

I might upset the apple cart here but I'm going for the 1981 Opel Kadett 1.3 GL the aussie 1.3 motor ran a hell of a lot better than the 1.6 european version stronger and with a change of exhaust more powerful and quicker than the 1.6, would easily run with the golf 1 1.6 GTS, crazy thing is the majority of modern corsa parts still fit.
No.2 has to go to the early 80's daihatsu charade turbo what can I say it was funny looking for Its time but damn quick.
No.3 Nissan Langley Exa Turbo the motors weren't indestructible but when the turbo eventually got going wow and you got pop up lights

No my car is not modified its just had an update!!!!!!!
