You sort of answered your own question there. If you had a rover 45 back to back with a mondeo or focus you'd know just how out dated rovers were. If they'd spent a bit of money developing either a Super mini or focus equivlent rather than spunking it all on an over priced under developed Bitsa supercar they might still be in business. The 45 is a bit cramped and frumpily-styled but a better car overall than the Mk1 Focus for sure. The interior of the Fuckus is just nasty, and it's lacking character. Everybody says they're amazing to drive, but they aren't that fantastic. Bwhhahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahhahahahahaha.. I suppose you could get a cheap wood effect dash kit, carriage clock and a pipe holder to make the focus dash as classy as the rover.

I went to the Nanjing press conference last year and came away shocked by the whole ethos of the set-up, and particularly because they had no plans to set-up a dealer network! What's more, I can't see anyone here wanting to buy a new MG 750, or whatever it's called.
Rover should have been sold to Honda instead of BMW because there was a real opportunity to move Rover along in terms of product design and quality, and maybe customer loyalty as well. But no....
Mind you, when it comes to jobs, funny how this government got all het-up when MG Rover went down, yet couldn't give a monkey's about Peugeot's Ryton plant closing, saying it was a 'commercial decision.'

I think the germans are the lucky ones as they buy cars made by germans and they happen to be reliable but what about the french there cars are'nt as good as german motors but they still buy them.I think i should take some of my own advice and buy a rover or MG as my daily driver because i drive a 306 HDi at the minute. As for the k series engine having head trouble, that was down to someone penny pinching on plastic locating dowels. But thats just British managment allover "look we can save 1p on every engine when we make it but it will cost £800 to put right on warranty claims, wow what a great idea" ;D.I'm off now to go and look at the auto trder and buy a nice 75 or zt The one the italians said was "the most beautiful car in the world".When i was in Berlin after seeing so many german cars there was always a mini or a 75,MGF or bubble shape 200 driving round so at least some one else loves british motors.

The Focus is superior in just about every respect. And no i don't own one but i've driven loads belong to Avis (and a fair few of their Rovers too). A rover quote from a relative who fixes and flogs cars when I commented on how nice a R600 he was selling looked for the money: "Typical curse word rover though. Nothing electrical on it works!" To my simple mind, crapness doesn't automatically equate to character.

i used to work in a ford dealership. one of the nicest cars (over a new mondeo st tdci, new focus tdci, mk1 focus tdci...) was a 3 yr old rover 75 estate td. felt better put together, more comfortable, better vision, nicer, smoother engine and nicely weighted steering. but then of course who wants a car like that?

The 75 (& it's variants) were always good quality cars and relatively up to date (launched in '98) unlike the rest of the MGR range. IIRC, it did very well in the JD Power surveys too. I really like them, especially an OEW Mk1

I agree with the comments that Rover should have been sold to Honda instead of British Airospace. Think the writing was on the wall from then really, Honda cut ties with Rover, and BMW never really had the financial backing to get it all sorted.
I've had a few Rovers over the years, SD1's, Montego's and an 820 Vitesse, and found them all to be good, reliable cars, but with poor dealer back up. You know the score, go to a motor factor to be told "main dealer only mate", then the main dealer doesn't really know if and when they can get the bits (or really care)
I've also had discussions in the past with colleagues who have felt the need to take the mick over my allegiance to English cars. One lad was well into his Beemers, but was quite willing to accept that they had a known problem with cracking cylinder heads on the "small" six (e21's and e30's) if the anti-freeze wasn't replaced regularly. The other lad had a Corrado VR6 that was showing signs of distress having low compressions on a couple of cylinders. They were both quite willing to accept this as being the norm. I put it too them that if they had Rovers with similar faults that they would be slagging them off because of there reliability.
Also, my ex sister inlaw was German, and she was fiercely proud of everything German (used to do my head in), when my Brother came out the army, they bought a 1985 BMW 320i that cost about 2K, I had an '84 Rover 2600SE at the time, which they took great pleasure at ridiculing (it only cost £200). They didn't have a leg to stand on when I pointed out how many miles my 100% reliable Rover was doing going from one place to another getting bits for there BMW!

IAlso, my ex sister inlaw was German, and she was fiercely proud of everything German (used to do my head in), I think that was one of the main problems with MG Rover. Its fashinable nowadays to slate anything British and buy foreign. "the Austin" had a very steep uphill struggle to survive.

For me the 75 V8 is just an all-time classic, absolutley fantastic. If I ever feel flush enough to spend more than £150 on some wheels thats what I shall get.

Alot of mixed feelings here about this subject. My dad used to have an Austin montego and aside from an automatic choke problem he said it was one of the best cars he'd owned. At the time alot of his work mates drove sierras and they agreed that the montego was a better car.Every time i'm at the scrappy i seem to compare cars and fords always feel cheap and nasty compared to a Rover or austin rover of the time.I've owned a few fords in the past but the worst one was a MK4 escort Ghia that was a total pain to live with But when some woman in a corsa t-boned the side of it i was over the moon, she must have thought i was mental
