Hi,
I've been trundling round in my golf all week with some good mud and snow tyres on the front as its pretty deep round my house until we eventually get to the road, haven't got stuck once and got past more capable vehicles stuck.
I've got a good 2hr drive on the motorway tomorrow so I've just put my normal tyres back on an I can't even get off the drive! Just sits and wheel spins, so, how suitable will it be to keep my m&s tyres on for the journey? I don't want to get all the way there and then get stuck, nor do I want to burn them up down the motorway.
They're rated like normal tyres, load and speed is 88T which is good for 118mph. So they'll be fine right?
Thanks

Yeah they will be okay, i have used my winter tyres on the motorway a few times and found no ill effects. likewise, I didn't put them on this winter and i have been sliding all over the place.

Do you mean the tyres with huge knobbly tread or the tyres designed for when the temperature drops?
No idea about the first, but I've had cold weather tyres on my Triumph for a few years now, no problems at all and I can't say that they've worn any faster than normal tyres.

I've done 800 motorway miles on winter tyres recently and not noticed an accelerated rate of wear.

This weather is the recommended type for winter tyres, cold!

Yeah, they'll be fine. I did ~30,000 miles on a set of M+S marked budgets on my Imp without wearing them out.

I had no idea that marks and spencer did tyres, not just any tyres, m&s tyres. :-))

Everyone here runs m/s tyres from early november to april without any troubles, with probably a lot more time on bare asphalt than snow and ice. And let me assure you finns don't buy a set of 700€ tyres each winter ;D

Yeah, had Michelin winter tyres on my 205 all round since October, was actually really slack in swapping tyres about and still had a pair on the back since the winter before, that's 11k miles they've done from 7mm and I think they're still on 5mm now.

Got these on my other halfs Surf, we use them all year round on any of our 4x4s, excellent tyre on road and in the mud and good in the snow despite not being designed for it. www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Road+Venture+MT+KL71They do them in car sizes as well, took my mate out last year and demonstrated you often don't need 4x4 with proper tyres and he fitted some on his 5 series touring this winter. Last year he couldn't even get it out of his road, this year his missus was plowing through the snow commuting to the village school where she teaches.

I run Winters all year round on My Van, the summer trade off is not a problem, being able to move in the winter is the main priority. Have spare set of wheels with winters on the BM, and winters now on the FAmily wagon too It is IMHO the only way to go, 2 sets of wheels, summer tyres for summer, winter tyres for oct-april permaslime

I'd like to see the comparison between my specialised tyres and some "all season tyres" though. I do mega miles so for me it makes sense. And I love actually going for a drive in the snow! Lol ;D

Winter tyres are generally designed for 7 degrees C or lower, so fine for pretty much 6 months of the year, but you can run them all year without any danger, they just wear a bit quicker when it's warm.

We have a pair of winter tyres (Hankooks) on the punto, they go on the front about Nov/Dec when the temperature starts to drop, then in Mar/Apr time they go back onto the rear and the rears that are ordinary Hankook's go back onto the front. That way the winter tyres get very little wear during the summer. This is only good on a front wheel drive car of course :-)
