I'm looking for an engine and gearbox and have quite a few requirements. Are there any cars that use the following: diesel 4 cylinder, RWD, automatic gearbox, mechanical injection, preferably can run on veg oil.
I believe there are some mercs (OM604?) that have some of the above but I read they are a swine to run outside of the merc due to electronically controlled gearbox? and they might not run on veg? Then there are older merc engines like the OM601 but they look like they're very hard to get hold of and pricey.
Alternatively are there any engine and box combos that bolt together easily and are relatively easy to obtain? (ebay, scrapyards etc)

Is there any value in looking for an unpopular (thus cheaper) commercial donor vehicle? While auto would be uncommon in older commercials, it would be a complete drivetrain so there would be no pick'n'mixing with engines and gearboxes.
What about a Taxi? Both models seem to have auto options.
What's it going in? If it's a Caterham clone kit car then my somewhat agricultural suggestions will start to seem silly...

2.5 TD granada? Not sure if they came as autos but they're the kind of car that you'd expect to.
I'd guess a carlton autobox should bolt up to a 1.7td isuzu lump?

Depends on which shape granada, the early ones had the Pug lump from the 505, usual old slugger, trad diesel, tough and simple but noisy slow and rattly, you could get a bug eye Scorpio with a TD which was the VM lump same as used in Jeep cherokees and classic Range rovers, horrid old thing, best suited to a boat if at all, though you could get an auto (a4lde iirc) not uncommon at all and 'reasonable' power and economy..
I'd look for a Mazda Bongo being broken, tough 2.5 litre 4 pot TD almost always with an autobox slung behind it, find a crashed one, they break well then sell the interior etc and weigh the rest in..

Land Rover Discovery? Obviously 4x4, but that's only a transfer box hanging off the end of the auto box. The pre-TD5 engines were mechanical.

Thanks for all the replies, lots to look into! What about a Taxi? Both models seem to have auto options. What's it going in? If it's a Caterham clone kit car then my somewhat agricultural suggestions will start to seem silly... The fairway taxis look interesting. It would be going in my amazon. I was going to use an XUD and mate a RWD autobox but if there's something that'll come as a package or bolt together then it'll save me no end of time.

Drew in here (datsun drew I think is his user name) fitted the perkins 2.0 td from a montego into his Amazon. Think it was a manual, but might be an auto SD1 or similar set-up that could work?

I was going to suggest the Volvo, but they're a 5-pot not 4, so I don't know if the OP would get away with one. Not bad otherwise though.

(His definitely is) This is probably a better option than the 318td option mentioned earlier. I never heard great things about the 318tds when they were new. Is this the same diesel plant that they had in Rover 75s? Both E36s and the 75s seem pretty widely available and cheap as complete cars.

I have a mechanical pump from a 601 merc engine collecting dust in the garage if you're interested? They are bolt on for the 604's. I could also find you one with 7mm fuel heads installed for a huge power increase if that's what you're into. Also the older merc boxes should bolt up to the newer engines, at least to the 604-606 serie if you insist on a slushbox.
