So I am wondering what to get for my first retro. I want something foremost cheap to insure also It has to be practical. I am looking for normal insurance to get my NCB up so I went on aviva and put loads of cars in these are the ones that came under £2000 for insurance So the best bet at the moment seems like an MGB GT, readily available to buy, loads of spare parts and a bit sporty. So my question is do you have any other ideas for cheap cars to insure doesn't have to be retro? It seems a bit random because the MGB costs £1400 whereas a yaris is costing me £4000 Thanks

Screw retro, for £400 quid insurance I'd ride around in a trolley.
Been driving three years now and I still haven't broken 500 or less.

If you're picking from that list then i'd go for the Nova. With a few chassis tweaks you can make them handle fantastically , they're retro cool nowadays and there's always the option of slotting in the ubiquitous XE at a later date.

corsa b - insurance around 2 k mark if you shop around can look mega cool with subtle oem touches - spares are cheap and parts can be had reasonably and plenty in the breakers for spares so ideal first car IMO!

out of that lot id choose the 124, cos I don't like low-rent british 'sportscars'. might be worth getting a quote on a lada, as early a one as you can find, as they're basically the same car but with smaller engines and are typicall very cheap to insure (unless you do what ive done to one...)
lupos are very cheap on insurance compared to most things of that size and shape, and are quite quirky/cool if not exactly retro.
looking at the lineup, you must have a fair old budget to spend though 124 sports, citroen DS, and sunbeam alpines aint exactly cheap cars......

Tips - check the voluntary excess (if you can afford it). The difference on my policy is £200 more on the excess means the policy comes down by a paltry £8, not worth it in an accident. I found 80s fodder being best VFM for insurance. 70s and older and insurers think they are expensive to fix in an accident, and 90s or newer are complex to fix. I was genuinely getting cheaper quotes on an 88 Renault 5 GT Turbo than a 95 Corsa 1.2. Only reason I didn't go down that route was that a decent 5GTT is £1500-2k, whereas a Corsa is about £5-600. And my parents thought I'd die in a French plastic and tin fireball.

You need to be phoning some companys. Not doing online quotes.
Adrian flux used to insure me on my bug when i was 19 for about £400
Ive just sold my last one. All mods declared, I'm 24 and it cost me £297 to insure.

Years ago adrian flux used to insure me on some ridiculous hot hatches for reasonable money, but over the last few years they've jumped on the "overcharge everyone" bandwagon. Luckily I turned 25 recently and got straight on the blower to Footman James, my 1989 golf GTI 8v cost me £288 fully comp with breakdown cover, european cover and free agreed value. I nearly fell off my chair! Thats a quarter of what I was paying previously on a laguna DTI family barge.
Agreed on online quotes, the best insurance companies tend to be the ones you have to call for a quote, and comparison sites rip you off what with their commission.

Being a young driver myself and having gone the MGB GT route i can confirm that they arent particularly sporty... but they are a right laugh, the fact you're lower and theres the engine shaking the whole damn car etc. can make it feel faster than it is and as you say, parts are plentiful and cheap to come by, as are the cars themselves in the first place so long as you avoid rust depends what you want from a car, but ive happily done some motorway stuff, town driving, b road blasts and even went camping in mine the other weekend so they can be fairly versatile

I would add a Triumph Dolomite 1850 and Sprint to that list. For odd reasons they both are as cheap as my MGB was to insure. They are not quite as 'fun' and sporty (or at least feel it) when compared to a 'B but they do deliver all round chap, are cheap to repair (although some spares for the Sprint are now pricey and getting scarce) in addition to being quite comfy for a variety of driving (I really enjoyed (once I had the tracking done!) driving my Dolly Sprint on the motorway and country bends . Out of that list I could also suggest the 'B . My Spitfire is tons of fun in the bends, but it is a little agricultural compared to the 'B, Stag and Dolomite (read scuttle shake etc.) but that could also be down to mine being on poly bushes and Spax dampers (I do not know how hard they are set to).

If you can find one and can afford it then possibly a mk1 Fiesta? was always the cheapest for me to insure from quotes.

Hmm might have to show my mum this. All these quotes are cheaper than what we've been getting and they nicer than a 1.1 3 door fiesta from 2001

when I was doing quotes out of interest a while ago I found that old fords were cheap insurance (well 80s stuff at least) 1.6mk4 escort was cheaper to insure than corsas and 106s 1.1/1.2 engines. 1.3 escort was even cheaper again
