Ive experienced the opposite though. We were given a mk1 Fiat Uno as it was on its last legs and wouldn't get through another MOT, apparently it would empty its oil sump in 30mins. Got it home and pushed the dipstick in properly and put a new seal on the same, and it went straight through that MOT, 2 years later it needed a wiper blade, and 4 years later a new headlamp bulb. Not bad for a free car then.

It looked like a show car, but i knew i'd find some surface rot when i took the arch trims and liners off, and wanted to nip it in the bud. I regularly had people in the back, and i just presumed the seatbelt mounts were good. As you do when your previous cars were modern. Turned out it was made during that one year they used curse word steel, and it was turning into cornflake from inside outwards.. Tip of the iceberg, it was a timebomb. It was otherwise lovely, so i reshelled it for a solid one with nothing but the shell going for it. Lovely car now, but i still think the colour of the old shell suited it better..

Bought an absolute minter of a Sierra a few years back, or so I thought, ended up going through oil in a matter of hours and had various electrical gremlins. Ended up flogging it to a local Sierra perv who sat it on his drive for a while but has apparently got it up and running again since it's been seen about relatively recently.

A mate bought a W123 a 230TE. Invested some money to tidy it up, renovate the suspension etc. - then it was my part to investigate a 'smal hole' that was to be welded. WEll, after I was fiished with poking there was not much left of the floor & sills... The hole is actally 10cm wider, only the floor insulation is holding it together... And it still had a year TÜV. Didn't know Stevie Wonder is a TÜV engineer ;D

I bought a 1303 beetle a few years back, it came with a long list of new panels that had been fitted, however it turned out none of them had been fully welded in just tacked, skimmed and painted - so with a screw driver i could do this, Whole car was the same so i scrapped it as i lost all faith in it.

I bought the remains of a Turbo Technics converted Sierra XR4x4 as a donor car. I knew full well it had been rolled. Even so, after I'd overhauled it and built the kitcar, it went like a bullet from cold, but could overheat quickly and didn't seem as potent as it should.
It was only after I sold it cheap to get rid, it seems the front transmission wasn't good, and the new owner had a go at changing the running gear. He lost faith and sold it to a friend of mine, at 10% of what it cost me to build it.
It was a bit of a white elephant to be honest, due to my choice of iffy donor more than anything else.
And in 25 years of motoring, it's been my only howler, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.

Bought a 'solid' Mk1 Escort with 'very little' rust from Croydon a few years back. Then a couple of months later when swapping the drivers side strut over this came with it: So I removed the top plate: Which revealed this: I was pretty curse word off to say the least....

Yup, bought this: From the pics, looked good! Tax exempt, and pretty cheap! The only time I could go get it, it was dark, so couldn't properly assess the condition. But still, looked good. Driving 4 hours home, the carb froze twice, the heaters were non-existent, the screen demist didn't work, the rear tyres were as hard as rock, so slipped all over the place, the gearstick wasn't fixed solidly to the body, so getting ANY gear was... difficult And to top it off... turned out it'd been in a scrapyard about 10 years previous, with the A-pillar smashed. It was repaired with BODYFILLER. After cutting off the wing, the door was removed by just pushing it down, then lifting it up. It took the bottom section of the A-pillar with it too The whole thing was falling apart...

Damn, pressed the enter button by mistake, 2006 I was walking thru Beaumanor classic car show, saw a Camaro for sale for £1500, looked fantastic, bronze with chrome slots. Cut a long story short, brought it, and a month later had it MOT 'ed, on the ramp, bloke poked about and the feckin rear end just fell off, tail lights bumper, valance, all gone on the floor. a big gap from the boot lid to the concrete floor. Cost me £600 to have it sorted, bummer

I bought my Carlton estate off an old couple. Really good nick, test drive was perfect.
Paid up, drove 1/2 mile to petrol station and brimmed it with 70 quids worth as we were driving it straight to Dundee. Most of it curse word out onto the floor where the tank flange had rotted through. It'd some so little mileage I don't think the previous owner had put more than a tenner in. I never fixed it just didn't put more than 30 quid in.
