Word. So, with the Oldsmobile gone and my new job going well, my mind has started cranking over with thoughts of a new project. Unlike projects of old, however, I'd like to get something that can be fixed with ease, is nice to drive, has plenty of modding potential and most crucially of all, something that looks good. One car that seems to be floating my boat at the moment is the Calibra. They look like a car that has some real potential to be amazing, but alas, all my Google Fu only seems to bring up pictures of horrid Euro-bilge with ill-fitting bodykits and three-spoke alloys. Not my bag, baby. As some of you may know, I had a Calibra many moons ago and I chuffin' loved it. I only sold it as there was a small bundle of joy on the way. Here's the beast in question (the car, not my daughter).... She was a beaut. Low miles, mint condition, strong 2.0 8v lump and comfy as hell. A great workhorse, too... So, that's where I'm at at the moment. The big question is, can you inspire me? Show me some pics of Calibras done right. Calibras with a bit of style. They're such a lovely shape - there must be some nice ones out there. In the meantime, have Steve Pateman's V8 Calibra poppin' a wheelie for your troubles... Chris

Blimey, they're not worth any money are they! I had one about 8 years ago and it was great, never had the lifestyle for a coupe since. I would love a turbo or an SE9 V6. There is one on ebay with 39k on the clock for £1250! ridiculous but tempting!
Stick, rims, drive, job done.

Got massive love for the Calibra, had a 1990 16v in stunning red about 5yrs ago and I can honestly say that I've yet to have another car that I enjoyed driving in as much!

I think the Calibra is one of the best looking Vauxhalls of them all...But, having owned one once, I'd say it's the worst sports car I've ever driven and I'd wished I'd took it for a proper test drive before buying it. (It almost put me off Vauxhalls for life).

Built on a mk3 Cav I believe, buy one of them?
I do love the convertable with the mk3 golf bikini top though, i'd of loved to have been in that design meeting...

Here's a few I like. What I've managed to surmise from an internet trawl is that the less you do to the Calibra, the more awesome it looks. Nudge it towards the ground a little bit, but some not-too-showy wheels on and polish it and you're on to a winner. Start adding super wide/big wheels, stretched tyres, slamming it with the stick, big lumps of fibreglass and you spoil what is a rather excellent design to begin with. It's not that you can't do anything to a Calibra, it's more that you don't need to.

Ive had 3 over the years, 2 16v's and 1 turbo. I broke the Turbo for the engine in my Cavalier Mk2 now - it was rotten and Calibras do rot, especially the early ones. They arent sports cars, they are just flash Cavaliers and retain that sort of practicality in a 3dr body. The 4x4 does help with the handling a lot. I really rate them, for the money they are now especially. The comments about the less you do to them the better is right I think, wheels, drop and not much else does it if you get the rims right. Heres my redtop 16v, bodykit was a fitted from new Irmscher one.

i had three redtops in a row, last one was -40 ish on konis on standard 15" rims, and i loved it. regretted the barp barp full magnex though. got whacked in the side and a junction and broke it for parts, the lump probably lives on in a nova/corsa somewhere, and the only pics i have are the ones forr the insurance claim!
