Prompted by the french plates thread...
What I want is a set of the old fashioned reflectiveplates which have the black plastic letters and numbers on them. The same type as was originally used on my Capri. Used to be able to get these but they seem to be illegal to make now.
Anyone got a supplier for them?
Also what about those pressed ali reflective plates you used to get in the early 1980s? Any ideas on them either?

I have one with the black plastic letters off a land rover (E prefix) sat in my bedroom that I picked up on a green lane quite a while back and was wondering if it would be possible to get a pair for the Polo, so I'll keep an eye on this thread.

79 - yes those are one of the styles I was thinking of. The other is the sort that have the aluminium plate and then black plastic letters that clip on to them. Like these:

I used to know a companyt that did them, in fact they did every plate style ever done in the UK including the old cast iron(!) ones but now only seem to do the acrylic modern style and the pressed ali black ones for legal reasons.

I reckon black plates only look good on the really old stuff. EG look right on a Mk2 Cortina but can look odd on MK3s. Most stuff from the late 60s and on would have had reflectives on from new, only old fashioned people who were still buying Cambridges and Oxfords in 1970 would have had black plates on when new. Proper reflectives look better on the newer style cars. For the absolute win theres a specific brand of stamped reflective plate with really rounded letters which was done in the late 60s, I think they were called Abbots, they were the "right" plate to have on cars of that era. People take them off, chuck them away and fit repro black plates and its wrong. My Ventora had them on, looked absolutely right for period (erm, because they were!) You can just see them in this pic Yeah, I'm a numberplate annorak...

Yea, my '71 Triumph 1500 was wearing what were believed to be its original plates (still!) - the "3D" effect ones. They were seriously cool

I agree, it would be good to find a suppleir of these. The Herald wears its original plates - we can tell because they have the name of the dealer who supplied the car (Doves) on them! They're loosing their yellow/white and I'm sure the MOT man's going to disagree with them eventually

Lewis your plates were made by Tennants whoi were the company I was hoping still made them but they have been talling people who ask that they can't supply them any more. My last set cost me £18 from them.
They ain't 3D effect, they are real 3D dude!

Yellow plates and white plates are nasty things, they're the work of the devil!!!!! All cars should have black and silver.

Has anyone dareded to ask on the PC forum? not bin on in ages. I like the 3d ones, very classic British! They should be legal to make, so long as they have the makers logo on. are the sticky 2d classic race letters still available? probs not...

Quick technical point.... ANPR cameras cant read non reflective plates, so there's a reason in itself for fitting them, I do agree plates should match age of vehicle, but the 'tina came with the ali black whites already fitted, and they do look damn cool on a black car. Need new ones for the chevanne, they look tatty and cack now its all painted an shiny, but I font want modern acrylics. Was thinking of (carefully) dismantling the 3d plates and renewing the vinyl bit, but the ally is corroded too so I'd prefer new ones.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in
