Most of us know that if you want the glamour and performance of driving a retro van, there are lots cheaper than the classic VWs. Here are some that I'd have in an instant ;D RAF 10. Produced in Russia in the early 50s, it won't suprise you to hear they used a split screen VW van for inspiration But it's a lot bigger! Still in Russia, I've got a soft spot for these doe-eyed UAZ 452 vans. They're based on the UAZ jeep with 4WD. You might have seen one in Ewan & Charlie's "Long Way Round" motorbike programme Staying Eastern-bloc, this Tatra 805 has an aircooled V8 in the front and 4WD. They'll really go where Land Rovers fear to tread and like most military things they were available with an open or closed rear. Here's an East German Barkas 1000, powered by a Wartburg 2 stroke engine, the Transit van of the DDR ;D Or like this..... I didn't notice them go, but of course there used to be thousands of these on the roads And if I wanted to deliver the bread at Miss Marple's house, I'd use one of these Morris J vans. Character in heaps Your favourites?

mk1 transit definatley wins in my book, i been looking, but clean ones cost bundles nowadays unless you want a camper van.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

I love the Barkas vans. Three cylinder engines so they sound fantastic and I understand they go quite well considering the engine is 991cc!! (no, that isn't a typo!)
The Morris J is funky but someone has already done a nice custom job on one. So nice I wouldn't like to try and compete.
What about the later Morris vans? Wipers at the top of the windscreen but I can't remember what they are called.
Sherpas can be had for peanuts too.

J4, that's the one (I'm sure Morris marketed it too?) But surely this is the van to have!

Don't know about classic vans but a friend of mine has got a modern Transit with a 125bhp TDCI motor with a mountain of torque. Unladen it's probably lighter than a Mondeo and it flies.

They are ALL cool as hell! Christ, I'd actually forgotten all about the BMC EA vans! They used to be everywhere, as they were the 'weapon of choice' for the GPO at one time I'd love any of these old vans, especially if they were combined with some more up-to-date powerplants. Seen quite a few Mk1 transits running later 2.5 diesel and turboi diesel lumps, but none of these more obscure chuggaz.

That must be from somewhere around here as Marley tiles was in Wittonstall. Has now closed down. I had quite a good explore of the old factory.

That chopped UPS van misses the point for me - I like the fit-for-purpose utilitarian aspect of them. I have always liked these: But know absolutely nothing about them, so going off for a read this very moment
