reading about the mis hap with that guy buying that midget and it loosening a HT lead. I wandered, how far have you guys travelled to go and collect a car?
I'll start. Couple of years ago, my dad who lives down in Devon bought a vauxhall viva gls estate without even veiwing it. Then all we had to do was collect it... from Dundee! So we flew up to Edinborough, caught the train to Inverkeithing, and then bussed it to dundee. Where the owner almost refused to let us drive it back! ;D We set off though, and after 650 miles and 13 hours straight driving we managed to get the car home without a single breakdown. And we pulled a bird in an Aston. she loved it.

I bought my SD1 in Grimsby last year, which is close to the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam. Except i had to deliver some parts in London on the way in, and deliver another car on the way back. So instead of taking the ferry to Hull (which would make sense) i did Tilburg - Calais - London - Grimsby - London - Dover - Tilburg in the end, which was about 1000miles. Did it in 2 days though

I bought my (since sold) RJ125 microcar from France "sight unseen". Didn't even know what it looked like as so rare !. 1500 mile round trip to collect. Admittley I was going to France anyway (at the time maybe 4-5 time a year) so easy enough to take a trailer to bring it back.

Went to wales on the train and collected a Jago Geep done up like a military one, no sidescreens at all and it rained all the way back despite having been sunny on the way there, it started as soon as I drove out the guys yard. I've been all over the place, always makes me laugh when people say "to far" to anywhere in the UK.

Ive done a few midnight runs for cars - first few were badly planned and turned out usually with me on the end of a tow rope connected to my dads volvo. Then as I got wiser I prepared more - like my old GT or my Audi Quattro.
Audi Quattro saw on ebay - made an offer on it - offer was accepted drove down from Perth to Barnsley in the dark - walked round it paid my cash and blasted home. But turned out all good!

Very few of mine are less than 150 or 200 miles away. In fact, I feel a bit let down if a car purchase doesn't involve several hours of rail travel then loitering about in a random dodgy town centre, followed by an unnerving trek home in the dark. Never broken down though (yet).

Most of mine have been long ish trips, not often less than 150miles each way, sometimes with trailers some time to drive.
I have never thought of a car on main land UK to be to far away

Furthest for me was probably my first Escort. Flew from the Isle of Man to Gatwick trained it to Croydon and hopped in a taxi to the chaps house. Looked at the car, bought it then drove it back up to Liverpool to catch the Ferry home. Managed to do it all in one day. One very lonnnnng day.
