Just a thought really but are there any companies / garden shed electrics experts able to utilise OEM audio equipment so as not to spoil the originality of something like this... I'm thinking for instance, the five buttons springing into life hidden ipod (shuffle only as you wouldn't want to spoil the look) and FM radio gadgetry. Reduced functionality but better look than a modern stereo on show. Is this sort of thing being done? Should think it'd be expensive.

I also know there are companies that can retrofit an aux input into old FM/AM car stereos, can't be cheap though... I did that ^^ to the radio in my P6. Cost of the bits came to under a fiver - but it is still mono only, as per the original radio

most people just hide something more modern and leave the original in the dash if they are that worried about looks, its the speakers that are more difficult to hide i reckon.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

There's been a few guides on how to wire rca's to the volume knob, quite simple really. If it's mono I recommend changing the pot to a stereo one, and a small amp behind the dash. I'm sure you could dig out a wiring diagram for the iphone cable and make a button for "next song" too.
The buttons on the radio are probably mechanic, but with a bit (or quite a bit) of fiddling you could mount microswitches behind them to control the iphone or whatever.

The easiest way would be one of those FM adapters that actually outputs the iPod shuffle directly into the aerial jack. Not going to be perfect reception but then the old stereo and speakers wont be perfect anyway.
I guess you could rip the old unit appart and, as dude suggests, use switches to mimic the headphone controls.

^Most retros (at least in OZ) don't have FM, only AM frequency. I wouldnt mind wiring an aux into mine...
