Right this year for me is going to be a tight one, I am buying my first house with Mrs.Sexwithyoureyes and I'm possibly going to need to drive to work. So as much as I love doing skids I realise that it is an expensive hobby which ruins cars, this has been bought painfully to my attention by me breaking the 535. I snapped a rocker arm, which I haven't fix and with the MOT and tax looming next month I decided to throw the towel in, and get something semi-sensible. To be honest I think anything RWD is off the cards, one because anything RWD either carries a heavy premium or is thirsty and two I just fancy a change. I oddly find my self looking at Korean stuff, Brian Damaged recent Hyundai Accent thread got me into those and I keep finding my self strangely drawn to Daewoo Lanos'. They just seem to represent good value and I just want something cheap to run, cheap to buy and have a bit of fun modifying it on a budget. Anyone owned either? Are they any good? I get the impression the Lanos is 80% mk3 Astra anyway, is this right? This kinda thing but on some Japanese wheels (probably Rota copies on something much more expensive TBH)..... ....or this..... I'm struggling to find any decent modified Lanos' at all. Failing that any other ideas are welcome. Criteria: Must have zero street cred Cheap in every respect Good possibilities for wheel fitment and lows My budget is tight around £500-800 for a car and £500 on wheels/lows.

An ex of mine had a Lanos for her first car which I repeatedly stole because it was a proper laugh to rag around back lanes. Revved well enough and handled well through the twisties.

Your criteria will be the exact same as mine when I sell my S12 some time soon. You can get mk3 Astras and Pug 405s for ~£3/400 or so and either would be great as daily chod and respond well enough to lows and wheels. Actually, I really fancy this mid-90s Mazda 626 even though it's like another £150 a year to insure over a 405; You could probably still get a Porsche 924 for ~£800. I was going to put on JDM arches and banded Pug steelie 15s on mine before I had a "bit" of an accident in it.

Thanks for the responce guys and girls Too cool and likely to be too thirsty too? Rover 400? No street cred Dead cheap 4x100 PCD Already on my radar, although I'd only want this shape The later bubble shape does NOTHING for me! the Lanos can look quite cool too.. Oh that's a pretty tastey...... for a Lanos hyundai elantra kia rio (the old one) Elantra maybe, Rio no had a look at them but they didn't float my boat. Yeah the daewoo lanos is basically the mk3 astra Corsa rear spring to slam it then ;D

I can't imagine AKKU's PissRat being heavy on dinojuice, though it does have the slightest hint of street cred being an old VW.
A Lanos would be good, they're underated and decent looking cars that have basically fallen of pretty much everyones radars. Like you say, anything that works on a mk2/mk3 astra will work on that too.
The boxy rovers (R8, I believe the style is) are cracking cars that are (obviously) even better with a honda lump rather than the rover kettle under the bonnet (not that a good K series isnt a good engine, they're sweet-as when looked after)
A P10 primera is a good call too...
EDIT -- which rocker is it thats snapped on the '34? I managed to change #6 exhaust rocker on my 320 with a bit of jiggery-pokery and sliding the rocker shaft out the front of the engine just enough. Not an easy job, but easier than removing the head.

have a suspicion that p10's might well take polo / golf / vw coilovers for cheap droppability?
and I think they should be 4x100, so plenty of wheel options - if they aren't they'll surely be 114.3?

If I was looking for anything remotely Korean and 'oddball' then my money would be on one of these all day, every day. Completely off 99.99% of peoples radar, pick them up for peanuts, service/maintenance for pennies and SOOO much potential: www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/chevrolet-espero-daewoo-1995-silver-automatic/96543093Pitcure ^ that ^ with lows, wheels and a big grin. PLEASE do it. I've wanted to do one for ages, but the need for a hatch is the only thing stopping me from living the dream. Live it for me Dude.

Already scoped out Espero's another great use of the GM J-body, although they seem to be thin on the ground now, that auto on is mega close to me. But I really don't like autos. Death by Lanos, I lol'd!

Go see the one near you, take it for a drive. If you like it (bar the auto) then you know to keep an eye out for a manual one. Happy to keep my eyes peeled for you too....and view any that come up in Bristol if it sees you behind the wheel of one.
PLEASE consider one as a top priority, you'll be my hero if you do it.
Oh, and if you haven't seen Pineapple Express, go and watch it ASAP. You'll love it!
