At first I thought it might be a 'shop job, but then I found some more shots: Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to create a coupe version of a car that already comes in (a rather splendid) coupe form anyway. The thread I found these pictures in ( here) doesn't mention the seemingly one-off body and no-one asks either. Does everyone know something I don't? edit: Changed thread title to E3 instead of E9!

Crikey, that's a bit special. What a shame that it's such an enigma.

That's a terribly awkward proportion, having the rear wheels so far back.

That's a terribly awkward proportion, having the rear wheels so far back. Isn't it, but somehow kind of works as well, gives it a kind of sure footed air.

Hiya Rmad. Looking at it, its a chopped E3 not E9. It looks like they have lost the rear doors, then moved the whole back end forward to take up the gap. E3's have bonnets that run complataly down to the grill, an E9 stops short, the body goes in front of the bonnet. The rear lights are also E3 lights etc. Its based on an E3 anyways. Sorry to be a picky sod, thanks for posting it up, very interesting, first time I've seen it too The chop probably saves a hell of a lot of weight and I know that the E3 has a massive boot that extends way beyond the rear wheels and you've got to watch going up / down slopes or the huge overhang will scrape on the floor. I kind of like it, but it does look a bit weird too. Seems less stately, more corner hugging.

I'd assumed it was a chopped down saloon but hadn't really looked into the origins of the E9 enough to know that that it wasn't based on the E3. In my head I kind of thought there was an E9 saloon and an E9 coupe with this special being a 'couped' E9 saloon...I hope that makes sense.
I'm still wondering why no-one in the original thread is asking more...are cut down E3s commonplace?

I like the shape of that, looks more Italian styled than the original.

First time I've ever seen one. Been hunting down pictures of E3's for a few years now, so suprised that I haven't come across it before to be honest. I'm no expert, but I'd think its quite a rarity. It definately has got an Italian feel to it, its growing on me

I like the shape of that, looks more Italian styled than the original Funny you say that... ..as soon as I saw this shot: I immediately thought of this: It's stunning in a purposeful way. I like the lines, the proportions and the stance. OK, it's not very graceful, but it has a real air of serious intention and that is something I really like. Thanks Rmad, a great find

I thought it had a look of an NSU Prinz about it, but that might just be the wheelbase and proportions.

This topic is 4 years old but, to answer all of the questions above, I bought this car in 2009. Note that; 1. It actually had a stock M30B34 (735i from 1985) engine in it and not the M88 block and Alpina head it was advertised with. 2. It had stock springs and triple exhaust. The two side exhausts could be blanked off to force exhaust out rear for street use. 3. Still ran aircon, open diff and was a mix between street and hillclimb. Ran the 4 speed getrag. 4. It was an E3 cut and shut. The rear strut towers that were usually under the parcel shelf were in the boot. Car was 330mm shorter than an E3 and 70mm shorter than an E9. Now has a rebuilt race M30B34, triple weber 45 DCOE's, 12:1 compression, balanced and blue printed. 5 speed getrag dogleg, race exhaust, Group 'A' fuel system. 600/400 lb springs. Bilstein Sports shocks, the lot. You can see the ongoing build here. www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1931628-E3-Racer I pick up the car next week as it is now sporting the E9 CSL batwing kit (minus the roof hoop strap. Fibreglasser ran out of time so I'll put it on later). Car comes fresh from a specialist race prep workshop and is ready for a season or two or supersprints, hillclimbs and historic racing. Oh, weighs 1226kg half fuel, all other fluids no driver. Next on the list is to finish the hoop strap and take 150kg out of the car. The bonnet must weigh 20kg. The boot/trunk lid must weigh another 20kg. Aim is to get her under 1100kg. I'll also put in a new 318 degree CATCAM high lift cam next year. That's engine out and pistons re-flycut so will need to wait. Separate to all of this. My street BMW is a 1977 633CSi with the 3.8 litre M5 straight 6 shoved up the front. Nearly finished and should go like a bat out of hell. The link to this car is here. www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?2119344-S38B38-into-my-1977-e12-chassis-d-633CSi

I love it on here when someone asks a question about a random internet car and then the owner turns up to answer all the questions. Will have a check around your build thread mate as the car looks mega interesting. Looking forward to seeing it with the batwing kit on. Feel free to add a build on here!

That left 3/4 view makes me think it's just begging for a Porsche flat six out back. At lesst a Type 4 Lump... It's likeness to the Fulvia is well-spotted and I think it's got some Fiat 128 in it as well.
Very nice car!
