just a quick rundown of the parts i collected yesterday. if anyone can help me identify these, i would much appreciated it. among the parts were: two distributors: one with a manual advance on it: two downdraft carbs, both look the same to me?: three heads, a quick inspection shows they are of varying thickness: head 2: head three: 4x front struts from a kp60. so i presume these are 4.114? 5k bottom end, with "d" dished pistons. and finally a nice rust free bootlid, curtousy of jules on here: from what ive been told one of the heads has had a bit of work on the valves, 3angle valve seals cut in. although looking at them, its hard to tell them appart. one has also had a big skim which has broken into the spark plug threads. resulting in what i imagine to be a huge compression ratio. also picked up this today: a 1ltr tin of hammerite. which was a result at half price (£9) when a 500ml one was £12 from wilkinsons! i currently have some brake parts in the gargae I'm refurbing, that this will be very usefull for.

The different k- engines had different heads. I'm not too clued up about them, but you can't mix and match them really easy. You need different push rods (they all differ in length) between egines/heads. I THINK the bottom one is what they refer to as a 5K twin squish head, but like i said, i really don't know for sure. Expect some large metal stuff coming to you soon btw!

always good news doc. I'm expecting the stuff had a feeling it was a twin squish head, as it has the low comp pistons. idealy id like to rebuild the bottom end, with the right head. just need to find out which one to use? can i convert one of the other heads if all else fails? I'm currently without any pushrods or lifters so i need to source these.

i think you can, with the correct lifter (solid/hydraulic) and push rod combo. But then again, i'm not too sure about this, i killed a 4K because of (what i now think) a wrong push rod/head combo. Because when running in the engine some lifters fell out and pushed the rockerarm out of the head. It happened just 1 hour after the first start

oh, i think ill need to do a bit of reasearch on this one. the block looks to have been running hydraulic lifters although id like to change them to solid, as ive heard they like the revs better.

after finishing work a bit early today due to the strikes. i thought i would finish off refurbing a few parts. the tin of hamerite hammered black came in most usefull. i realy loved the finish it gave the parts. almost like a nice engineered enamel finish (you know that old oily blue which you see on old drills and lathes ect) just black . looked very period. a bit tricky to photograph in the low garage light though, but i hope it captured it. got a bit carried away and ended up painting the rocker cover aswell. which i must admit. i do like, with the logo highlighted and polished.

today was mostly spent roud the garage stripping down the 5k motor to see what i could rescue from it. the block pretty much fell apart. the hardest part was working a way to lock the crank to get the pulley off. anyways a hard days stripping left me with this: the bores on the block seemed to be quite low mileage, and there was no sign of a lip. so a clean and a hone should see the block as new. the camshaft also seemed to be in good nick, as did the crank. although some foriegn bodies have cased a bit of scoring to the journals. nothing to major. so a polish will probably see this good again. the single row timing chain will be swapped for a twin row off of the 2k engine. as i believe that they were standard on those. there were no pushrods for this engine, and the followers were assorted (some hydraulic some solid. and noticeed the solid ones were slimmer). there are some followers and pushrods in the 2k although i doubt these would be usable. unfortunately now comes the hard part, trying to source bearings followers, gaskets, rods ect for the rebuild. if anyone knows of a good source for these it would be greatly appreciated. a local engineering company should be able to make the crank good, as well as possibly wedging and lightening it a little. depending on funds in the new year.

I'd keep the hydrolics in. With some upgraded valve springs revving to six billion rpm is not an issue I used SR20DET springs from Crower i believe. Turn up the volume, it revs hard enough! If you do want to use solids. Landcruiser 3FE followers fit right away. But that engine is rare and you'll end up buying new. The pushrods that then fit are Datsun A14 ones. Or you go all out and check out: www.esapeltonen.fi/ But my advise is to stay hydrolic. Lots and lots cheaper and it will still be very quick. For bearings, you're local engineers should be able to get those. And use an original head gasket. The difference between original and non original is night and day on the 5K gaskets. Keep up this pace!

thanks for the advice mark. ive managed to track down a gasket set from a local machine engineers. and they are retailing at £100 and take ten days to order! also i would like to use what i now believe is the twin quish head (massive comp ratio) so ill need a twin squish gasket. i have also sent the feelers out in regards to a few race engineers over here. so i am planning to follow up those leads soon. ill have a look at the datsun pushrods, but i have the feeling that they will be just as hard to find

not a lot happening due to weather and work commitments. having to bring small pieces home, and work on them as and when i can. got a few more pieces in paint this week. the alternator mount, waterpump pulley, and bellhousing bracket. i plan to get the sump home this weekend for a clean up and baffle, and hopefully get the block cleaned and painted. with possibly a hone if i can get the tool in time. on the engine side, the link that mark posted, has almost everything i need for this engine. including rings, gaskets, bearings and pushrods ect. so if all else fails and i am unable to get any on this side of the pond, ill be dropping him a mail. cheers guys

the winter months are unable to offer enough sunlight to do any propper work on the car at the moment. so i find myself bringing small parts home and trying to do what i can, in order to push the project forward. you may remember me removing the two front panels (or what was left of them: so with darkness drawing in i decided to retrieve the cardboard i had been whording for a few years, and have a go at drawing out the first templates. (these are rough guides and will be improved in the coming days) unfortunately, pics of the inner panels on these are hard to find so i had to take my references from a) the metal that ive been left with. and b) these two photos: a big thanks to markkp30 and baron for the above pics, and hope they don't mind me posting them. so using the two pictures i had to hand, i started to use the holes in the metal, the indentations and anything that stood out in the pics, as reference points. so draw round the remaining panel, and add in the lost parts in a sort of dot to dot picture fasion.. take rough measurements from the photos and transfer to the card using the reference points (in this case the holes) repeat for the other side, and cut out: as i said before these are rough templates, as a starting point and something to work with. i can already tell from these that they are a little out and will need redoing. but to be honest they came out a lot better than i imagined. thanks for reading, comments welcomed to top up the enthusiasm bank

well after a bit of tinkering in the garage after work (didnt stay to long because it was cold!) turns out my templates were a little off, so hopefully tommorow will bring a new set of templates and hopefully transfer them onto some metal

just a small update, well more of a thanks realy. yesterday was manic rushing around with work, then unwrapping deliveries, then meeting people but... had a delivery yesterday from baron, which included two front struts, powdercoated lovelies (more on this later). and a pair of uprated remanufactured springs. so thats the rear suspension almost sorted. then in the evening a big thanks to markkp30 and thomas (doctor) for bringing me over some parts from thier side of the pond! upon collecting the panels doc turns to me and says "i had this lying around unused its yours if you want it" and produced this: a lynx manifold for the k series engine to mount twin webber (dellorto or the like) carbs! words cant express how over the moon i was, unfortunately i had a family do to be at, (playing taxi) so i had to run and didnt get a chance to talk motors. but a big thanks once again to thomas. what a top bloke.

Nice to see its still moving forward Making templates by eye like that is always tough, so fair play! If you can keep the faith through the cold and dark times it'll all be worth it when you get to drive her in spring/summer

cheers goldenrust, was hoping to have both these panels done today, but a few things have put this on hold, mostly waiting on bits. so i did what i could today and made the templates for the two front panels. so started off with the original templates after some modifying, measuring, changing, cutting, sticking, measuring again, cutting again, consulting pictures again, i got here: using my newly aquired wings (cheers markkp30) i managed to sus where everything needed to be, and a handy profile gauge realy paid dividens. finally they are all cut out and ready to transfer to the metal. unfortunately the sheet i have is to thick gauge to use, so I'm going to aquire some next week. but not to be put off, i carried on and set about making the templates for the other parts of the panels, that join to the inner wings: i made the second one in all once piece, as I'm unsure yet as to how much of the original i can save, its quite rotten underneath: and i know this looks easy here, but i kid you not, to get the templates where i needed them, it took hours! eg i started at 9:30 this morning, and have only just decided (1pm) to call it a day! cheers for reading
