Thought it was probably about time I got myself a progress thread on here This is all copied from another forum so obviously most of it is old, but the car still isn't back, should be this week though Last September I decided I wanted a project car, but something different from the usual, something fun, and something I won't get bum raped orally on insurance costs! After a few suggestions and looking about the internet, I had found the ideal car, it was just a case of finding one for sale. After finding a few that I wasn't aloud to buy(ask TJ, my parents can be ****s  ) But I finally found one and was aloud to buy it. It had been off the road for the past 15 years, but still ran so I bought it blind, only seeing these images: There is more, but you get the jist of it. Once it was up here, and checked over by a couple of Imp owners, despite the rot in the usual places(Rear arches, rear lower panels behind the arches, scuttle/windscreen surround and bonnet edge) it was still a fairly solid car. Importantly the floor was solid, as were the sills minus a tiny hole needing patched. The next step was to get it the interior out, double check the floor was solid, and get some photos of the fabulous rot: Panels were then bought to get the ball rolling again after it sat in it’s sorry state for a couple of months: After that my parents kicked in, as did the exams and work came to a halt again But as soon as they were over, I set about finding a person to do the welding, after finding someone, it was time to get it ready for going, this included winscreen out, fuel tank out, and so that I had something to potter around with while it was away; engine out! Fuel tank out: Engine in: Engine out: The car will have been away for 7 weeks this Monday coming, and finally progress seems to be getting made! This is one side of the scuttle/windscreen surround that was made from scratch into a one piece panel: While it’s been away, I decided to get the engine cleaned up to the best I could, it started out as seen above like this: And nearly done looked like this: I shall get photos from the cleaned engine tomorrow including a few painted bits Sorry for slaughtering your internet connection, and a long boring read, but it finally gave me a reason to write up a new progress thread :sorry:

Another small update today:) The back window on the Imp opens up the way, and has metal metal 'hinges' which open up with the window, and once it reaches a certain high lock the window so it can stay up, and releases the window again once pushed up and lowered. Anyway, when I got the car one of these was separated missing the metal 'tab' inside which locked the window, and the other one was missing a plastic cover and had the internal tab but didn't lock the window. I gave my great uncle the pair of them, and asked if he could fix them since he has a lathe and a **** load of other metal working gear, and this was the result I got back today  Both lock, and unlock perfectly, and he even machined me up new plastic covers for them, worked out even better that they're in an of-white colour, just making them look aged:pimp: Hopefully have some more updates soon

Got a fairly big update last night with plenty of pictures The door had a small hole in it, which when he had grind it back discovered it was covered in catty, and the metal was wafer thin behind it, so that needed a larger plate put in. The panels i got, don't match up perfectly with the shape, of the body, but he will be able to fix that. The sill which i thought was just a small hole at the front, turns out that most of the way down the sill is rotten So a small bit of unexpected work, but at least it is getting there, and has told me it won't be long now, but i'll wait and see. And here is the pictures i've been sent

I never realised it was so much, but i'm attached to the car now, so it's getting finished! I only wish i could say it was me that has done all the welding and metal work

I don't want to pee on your bonfire but some of the welding looks a little iffy to me. I sincerely hope you're not paying too much for the work.
Other than that, much respect for taking the car on. I haven't seen an Imp in the flesh for a long long time.

Nice work on shaping the cowl/scuttle panels & ensuring everything fits though. Always unsettling to have to get work done and nice they are updating you properly to show exactly how it is being done rather than just being presented with a fillered & primered or even shiny end result hiding god-knows-what.

I know your pain, my parents said no to a lot of stuff, but your parents must be rather leanient in some respects because my parents would have refused to even look at photos of something as rusty as that!
Good luck to you, is all i'll say!

Always unsettling to have to get work done and nice they are updating you properly to show exactly how it is being done rather than just being presented with a fillered & primered or even shiny end result hiding god-knows-what. The scuttle looks perfect, and i was amazed at how well he had made it for me, and the welder has been perfect regarding updates. Like you say, helps you sleep at night knowing it's just not filler slapped on to the panels I know your pain, my parents said no to a lot of stuff, but your parents must be rather leanient in some respects because my parents would have refused to even look at photos of something as rusty as that! Good luck to you, is all i'll say! I had seen your thread buddy, hard trying to get a car you want, when your told what you can, and can't get! To be fair, if you look at the first photos of the car, it doesn't actually look that bad, so i think that's how i got away with it, although they're happy with me having it now, it gives me something to do, and keeps me out of trouble..... At times Cheers, all the best with the mini too!

Well here's an idea you may also hate! Stop posting in my thread if there is nothing constructive to say? I never said I wouldn't fit another one at a later date.
I'm not being all moany about some one saying bad things about my car, I couldn't give two sh*ts, but the way I see it, as i'm sure someone else will is, stop posting if it's not constructive!

Loving this. I've just bought an Imp as well so I'm probably going to be doing some work soon too!
Ignore the negative comments about welding. My first car was a mini and it was a patchwork quilt, the welding looked like a line of pigeons had S**t down each repair. But you know what...that was one SOLID mini. It wasn't rusty, didn't leak and was spot on!
Nice one for restoring it...keep at it!

everyone has a opinion some are not very positive, it's shame that some people feel the need to give such opinions when your doing your best, the welding may not be the best looking but it's what it is, you keep your head up and don't get despondant but a few people's comments, the car is coming along well and your going to have much fun/work with the build along the way, keep at it so we can see the end result, rusty.

Cheers mate Should be getting it back this weekend From what ive seen johnd has an imp, so for all we know he could be a purist. I, for one, like this car and I'm glad its still not sat getting rustier. He does, i don't mind criticism, everyone has their own opinions and is free to voice them, but constructive criticism is usually best, or it's not worth posting, IMO of course! Awesome ;D Do you have a progress thread up, or pictures of it yet? I'm not the one doing the welding, i had planned to do it myself and learn as i went, but i wanted it ready for a show along the road. Cut a long story short, the welding took longer than expected so i probably should of just done it myself, then i would of learned a new skill aswell, but oh well everyone has a opinion some are not very positive, it's shame that some people feel the need to give such opinions when your doing your best, the welding may not be the best looking but it's what it is, you keep your head up and don't get despondant but a few people's comments, the car is coming along well and your going to have much fun/work with the build along the way, keep at it so we can see the end result, rusty. Very true man, and i accept that, they could of been worded better though Like i said above though, i'm not the one doing the welding, for the reasons above. Cheers though Plan to have it out for the first half of September, so we shall see what happens Cheers
