Yesterday i took my Corsa to a garage to get the tracking done after fitting coilovers. On the drive back however, i kept hearing a clonk when going around corners. The cause of the clonking noise?  That's right, the mechanic forgot to remove his tools! I couldn't believe it when i saw them  |

I have left tools in engine bays etc before but how would you put the wheel back on and not see that?

I left a 15mm spanner on top of a battery on a mk5 Escort.
It was interesting as it arced out when I first turned left and smoke billowed out.

I have left tools in engine bays etc before but how would you put the wheel back on and not see that? Why would you remove the wheels to do tracking? indeed how would you do the tracking with the wheels off? |

Back in the day a chap I worked with lost his multimeter, searched high and low but it could not be found. 'Til about a year later when we had a regulars K10 in for annual service and test. And there it was, still clipped to the dizzy where he'd checked the dwell on it ;D S'pose it shows how often they did (not) dip the oil on it too  |

Mechanic's rule #1... If the car works, anything left on the floor after you finished wasn't needed in the first place  |

Many years ago I went to collect a Jaguar XJ6 from a garage for some work, I got told the car was in the workshop and the mechanic said it was fine to take, so I did.
After a few miles I went to slow down but this auto jag just wouldn't stop, I got in a bit of a panic, standing on the brakes and trying to get it out of gear but it wouldn't stop, In the end I managed to get it out of "D" but it managed to jump into "R", the rear axle locked up and I ended up snaking down the road before stopping.
After I wiped the seat clean I opened the bonnet, The mechanic had just a pair of brake pipe clamps to hold the throttle open!, When I accelerated the cable moved through the clamp but wouldn't go back meaning it kept revving!
I wasn't happy, I was only about 18-19 at the time IIRC.

On one of my old minis a good few years ago, a mate helped me with a bit of dodgy welding (didn't have my own welder back then). Clamped the front wing to the front panel, gave it a nice bead, job done. 4 months later, Doing some servicing on the brakes, I found he'd accidently welded his molegrips to the inside of my wing. Needless to say, they were a tad rusty, but still gave them back to him |

I picked up my "Approved Used" Merc C200K from the main delaer in Belfast, and was less than impressed with how they had not cleaned the wheels properly. First job when I got it home was to whip the rims off and clean 'em properly. Ooh, nice extra! 8mm Snap-On spanner on the bleed nipple of the OSF caliper. As the dealer was closed I photographed the thing in situ, and emailed it to them. At 0900 the next morning, the service manager was on the phone. If it's possible to prostrate yourself over the blower, he was doing it.
I got 3 free services and a new set of Conti Sport Contact tyres out of it. I don't imagine my mentioning that I knew the editor of The Belfast Telegraph had anything to do with it...

Not had anything that bad before. I put my bike in to the garage to get new forks (near the start of my riding career when i had no clue about bikes) and came home after it had been done. lifted the seat up to find a magnetic tray with several screws and tools in it. the amazing thing, forks don't need the seat lifting up and the tools and screws werent from my bike lol. Apparently it had been used as a storage chest while it was in there

Years ago, I left a pair of vice grips attaced to a punto tie-rod and it came back a few months later for MOT with 'em still attached! I still have them.

A few years ago, I did some work on my mum's escort and dropped a 1/4 drive socket down the back of the engine somewhere. Spent a while looking but couldn't see it or dislodge it so gave up.
A couple of months (and a couple of thousand miles) later I borrowed the car to take some stuff to the tip. Drove a few miles and then I heard a noise and something caught my eye in the rear view mirror as I pulled away from a junction. Stopped, and went back thinking it was a nut or something and it was my socket!
Last year I was at a tractor dealer (with my job) and was chatting to the machanic who was changing the diff in a big McCormick. He explained that he'd done the job on this tractor before (it's a weak point on them) and had just found his screwdriver still in the bottom of the casing - still there from the first time round!

Lol left a "few" tools in customers engine bays in the past, once my phone went to scotland in the airbox of a customers van, it was driving him mad trying to find the ringing noise bought it back for me to look at but of course it wasn't ringing till somone rang me and i was near, thank gos for 9 day batterys in phones nowdays ;D shame i'd already bought another phone, that'll teach me ;D |

phone in airbox. hmmm Ive heard of drilling airboxes to get a different sound but a ringing engine noise, now thats a first. might try that see what it sounds like haha. I suppose if you wanted a raspy/buzzy noise just set it to vibrate |
