Afternoon all,
Got three old 13inch OEM alloys in the garage for an MG Metro Turbo, one with a thoroughly shot tyre, that need complete refurbishment. I’ve tried selling them for a paltry 10 quid but no one’s interested.
Now, I’m considering just chucking them but I keep seeing people saying “I’m selling these wheels for £20 because that’s their scrap value”. If this is the case then I’ll weigh them in, but I’m a bit dubious that an old alloy wheel is really worth £5 in scrap. And to be honest, I’ve never weighed in anything, although it does sound mighty appealing!
Anybody actually weighed in any wheels recently and what’s the going rate?

thats not far wrong tbh, best bet is to take the tyres off too, get more money if they are just alloy n no other materials

£1.05 a kilo for 'clean' alloy wheels here as of tuesday. I took in a set of 16s id have advertised for about a year for £40 with no interest, and got £38.55 for them.
'clean' means no tyres, valves, wheel weights, steel nut inserts, plastic centre caps or anything else that isnt alloy on em.
so yeah, what people say is fairly true. obviously 13s will weigh a lot less than 16s, but still expect 4-5 quid a rim for them.
tbh, I'm finding a lot of stuff is worth more as scrap than people are willing to pay for it as a used part at the moment. particularly radiators, and starter motors or dynamos/alternators (windings as they're know in the scrap trade- basically electric motors).
another example of mine from last week- a shonky old copper/brass SD1 rad that worked fine but was a bit tatty with loose fins- 7kg@2.40/kg=£16.80
a dead alternator and 3x starter motors id had advertised for over a year at a fiver each with no takers, 39kg@45p/kg= £17.55
with a lot of cheap stuff like that, I kinda think its not even worth my effort tying to sell what are genuinely useful working parts, when the scrap man will give me the same price cash in hand with no hassle whatsoever.

Many thanks for the replies. Keep 'em coming!
Dez, I think you've hit the nail on the head there. When you can get a decent amount with none of the messing that goes with even a straightforward sale, it kind of makes sense to just bin the stuff. Hard but I expect true.

Yep my local yard pays £1.00 per kilo of alloy wheels atm, I took 4 wheels (2x14" and 2x17") and 2 shogun split rim faces last week. Came to 40 kilos ;D
I found a clean saff boot in the yard for £15 so I walk away £25 up! Can't complain.

I need to find a better metal yard. They seem just to take mixed metal, or at least that's what they pay everything out as... They also only price by the ton...
Anyone recommend a decent place for flogging windings, cats, rads, etc. in Nottingham? Not by the lorry load either.

I'm glad someone else asked, I'm about to be doing the same soon.
I got 4 x 14inch Sierra alloys 5 x 15 inch random alloys 4 x Mitsu Shogun alloy wheels.
I have also mustered a pile of other random curse word with a few odd chunks of alloys. If i take it all down together are they just gonna want to mix it or do they usually let me split it up into metal types? Couple of dead starter motors too.

with scrap yards, I find if you use the right words, and look (make sure youre dressed right) and act as if you know what youre doing, they treat you a lot better than if you just stand there sheepishly and let them do it all/tell you what to do.
always weigh ally wheels in clean, and separate to any other ally you have, as they pay different prices for different types. eg. engine blocks are a better grade than wheels, but only if clean- I.e.e no steel studs etc. in them. copper/brass rads weigh separately to any other copper or brass you have, and get as much of the steel fittings off as you can before you take em- literally hacking them off with an axe will improve your weigh-in price as they then become 'clean' too. same goes for ally rads too- and you get a better price if you smash the plastic end caps off before you take em, but weigh em seperately too as they're another different grade. stainless is over £1.50 a kilo at the mo too so worth separating if you have any- exhausts, etc.
steel can be the tricky one. if youre weighing in a car, youll get a low price as theres so much plastic and wibblepoo in it they're not actually getting much steel. obviously you want to rob anything ally, stainless, or brass/copper off you can before it goes in- wheels, rad, any easily removed engine bits, any windings- start/alt if easy to get to etc. and cut the cat off if its got one too. cats are done on merit round here, ranging from 30 to 120 quid. they youll want to weigh that lot in separately. you can double the price you get for a car in a couple of hours work if you do. remember its all gunna be fragged so smashing stuff off with a hammer/axe and cutting stuff off with a grinder is quicker and easier. you can get away with chucking a load of sh1t in it too, plastics, bumpers, interiors etc. as car grade is lowest grade so youre not gunna get a lot for it anyway. be warned though, only chuck stuff that looks as though it could be off the car in there- if they find it full of bricks or containers full of water or anything, youll get told to f-k off with it and not come back, and theyll likely pass your reg. round the other local yards too. remember theyll know roughly what each car weighs, so if youre weighing in a 2.5 ton fiesta, they're gunna get a bit suspicious and check over whats in it!! ive seen them pick a car up with the crane, rip the roof off and shake it upside down to empty it when they though someone was trying to pull a fast one. turns out they were, it was half full or building rubble shovelled under the seats and oil containers filled with water chucked in there too. they then re-weighed it once it was empty and gave them the lowest grade on it they could.
if youre weighing in loose steel, barter for a better price for it- show them its all good solid lumps of steel with no wibblepoo in there if necessary. I weighed in a load of random offcuts, brake discs, heavy suspension bits, and rear axles recently, and I got him to give me 'shearing' price for it as there was no other metals, rubber or plastic in there, which is half as much again per ton than car grade.
like I say, its as much about knowing whats what before you go as anything. the more you go to a place and they get to know you, the more they get familiar with what youre bringing in, and the more likely you are to get a fair price for it.

so glad I found this post. I'm in a very similar boat. I need more money to finish of the Cortina build and have loads of tat lying around. I'm taking down some pug 106 alloys (minus all tyres etc) and old pug 306 gearbox and two drive shafts. Going to be looking through every room and shed I have to find anything else. Think I have a set of really old spanners. Not worth much as they’re not good quality (also crazy sizes) but they do weigh a lot so hopefully can make some good money here!

nice couple of posts from dez there, similar round here, if you look and sound honest and tell them what you have rather than just look nervous and be told they seem to be alright with you. i got 9 quid each for some 15in standard alloys not so long ago - tyres etc stripped off.

Yes, some excellent info here and I'm very grateful. In fact, such good info that I feel like hacksawing the cat off my daily. Not sure the boss will be too impressed, mind...
Probably going to stick out like a sore thumb - especially as my four-year-old will insist on coming along because he loves trips like this - but I'll give it a go.

Many metal yards have a no under 18 policy - I know the ones I go to do so taking a 4 year old might not be a good idea. Also, they tend to expect you to have your own PPE (minimum of a hi-viz and a hard hat, some places insist on safety boots and eye protection too)
Also, search for a branch of EMR close to you - they will deal with public as long as you know what you are doing - sort all your metals into sacks before you go, for example.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Go in my work gear then, boots, viz-vest, gloves and general bad smell as standard lol
There is a EMR near where i work, know a few lads there who used to work where i do. Might be worth asking the question!
