rob, I use NMR (nationwide metal recycling) in ardleigh. mostly cos they're about a mile away, so it was worth building up a rapport with them. previously when I lived in ipswich I used whip st. pit, down bramford lane. sounds the the price of batterys has gone up a bit, they're were 3-4 quid for a normal sized one last time I weighed some! as has been, said, most yards wont like you taking your kids even if they stay in the car. my local was funny about me having the dog in the van at first, until they got to know me and know she wont get out of the van and go running round. general 'uniform' to fit in and keep them happy would be knackered ripped oilstained jeans and hoody, a absolutely filthy 'hi-viz' thats so old and dirty its kinda gone green, rigger/workboots, a hard hat if you have one, and a general dirty and dishevelled look if you don't have a hi-vis and hat, make a point of asking at the site office/weighbridge as you go in if you need one/they have one, and they will usually supply you with, rather than getting shouted at later by the foreman for being in the yard with having one on. my local is actually more bothered about you wearing gloves so you don't slice your hands open whilst handling stuff on their premises than you having a hard at it seems though, as I think theyve had a few people slice their fingers open and it has to go in their accident book. around here, a car would weigh for £130/ton at the minute. youll need to take the wheels off as soon as its in the yard and take them away with you, or youll get charged a disposal fee for them- typically £5 a tyre. a fester van must be aroud 850-900kg, so if youve not chucked anything extra in to get the weight up, and take the wheels and tyres away with you so you don't pay the disposal fee, you should get about £100 for it.

I need to find a better metal yard. They seem just to take mixed metal, or at least that's what they pay everything out as... They also only price by the ton... Anyone recommend a decent place for flogging windings, cats, rads, etc. in Nottingham? Not by the lorry load either. there's a no-ferrous only scrappy just down the road from the fox and CROWN pub at Basford.

General mixed metal prices have been good since China started buying all the world's steel : it's supply and demand.
A few years ago, I encountered the owner of the local scrappy blattering the plastic tanks off his old radiators. He was gathering up all the alloy and brass to weigh in as the per tonne price was better than mixed. Cat. convertors were/are premium - he told me about another scrappy who rocked up with a lorry load of cats to the recycler and cleared a fortune.
Incidentally, I weighed (literally) a 14" alloy this week at 7kg.

Done my annual weigh in today,Comes in handy being a plumber. I use a small scrappy in Lewisham who has his prices spot -on with the current market prices.
305kg clean copper £4.30/kg = £1311.50 65kg braziery £3.90/kg = £253.50 52kg brass £2.50/kg = £130 153kg lead sheet £0.90/kg = £125 weighed in corsa £125
His price for clean ally was £1.25/kg
So me and the other half will be booking our holiday tomorrow

with scrap yards, I find if you use the right words, and look (make sure youre dressed right) and act as if you know what youre doing, they treat you a lot better than if you just stand there sheepishly and let them do it all/tell you what to do. always weigh ally wheels in clean, and separate to any other ally you have, as they pay different prices for different types. eg. engine blocks are a better grade than wheels, but only if clean- I.e.e no steel studs etc. in them. copper/brass rads weigh separately to any other copper or brass you have, and get as much of the steel fittings off as you can before you take em- literally hacking them off with an axe will improve your weigh-in price as they then become 'clean' too. same goes for ally rads too- and you get a better price if you smash the plastic end caps off before you take em, but weigh em seperately too as they're another different grade. stainless is over £1.50 a kilo at the mo too so worth separating if you have any- exhausts, etc. steel can be the tricky one. if youre weighing in a car, youll get a low price as theres so much plastic and wibblepoo in it they're not actually getting much steel. obviously you want to rob anything ally, stainless, or brass/copper off you can before it goes in- wheels, rad, any easily removed engine bits, any windings- start/alt if easy to get to etc. and cut the cat off if its got one too. cats are done on merit round here, ranging from 30 to 120 quid. they youll want to weigh that lot in separately. you can double the price you get for a car in a couple of hours work if you do. remember its all gunna be fragged so smashing stuff off with a hammer/axe and cutting stuff off with a grinder is quicker and easier. you can get away with chucking a load of sh1t in it too, plastics, bumpers, interiors etc. as car grade is lowest grade so youre not gunna get a lot for it anyway. be warned though, only chuck stuff that looks as though it could be off the car in there- if they find it full of bricks or containers full of water or anything, youll get told to f-k off with it and not come back, and theyll likely pass your reg. round the other local yards too. remember theyll know roughly what each car weighs, so if youre weighing in a 2.5 ton fiesta, they're gunna get a bit suspicious and check over whats in it!! ive seen them pick a car up with the crane, rip the roof off and shake it upside down to empty it when they though someone was trying to pull a fast one. turns out they were, it was half full or building rubble shovelled under the seats and oil containers filled with water chucked in there too. they then re-weighed it once it was empty and gave them the lowest grade on it they could. if youre weighing in loose steel, barter for a better price for it- show them its all good solid lumps of steel with no wibblepoo in there if necessary. I weighed in a load of random offcuts, brake discs, heavy suspension bits, and rear axles recently, and I got him to give me 'shearing' price for it as there was no other metals, rubber or plastic in there, which is half as much again per ton than car grade. like I say, its as much about knowing whats what before you go as anything. the more you go to a place and they get to know you, the more they get familiar with what youre bringing in, and the more likely you are to get a fair price for it. Exellent advise there /\ /\ ;D I wiegh in steel wheels seperate as No1 sheering as well, only last week I opened an abandoned garage on my housing estate took all the wheels down me yard took the tyres off and made £120 on the wheels (tyres I took back and re nailed the boarding back up )

Anyone recommend a decent place for flogging windings, cats, rads, etc. in Nottingham? Not by the lorry load either. Zinder metals in Ilkeston do smaller stuff (they don't even have a weighbridge, just a large set of scales), or Ward Recycling (also Ilkeston) do stuff separately...

EMR yards are a different world compared to most. I love going down, dump the car between a couple of artics unloading maybe 40-50 tons a time and chuck all the curse word out lol.

Took a Rover 200 shell filled with scrap metal down to the local yard on Saturday. £167 for 960kg. Ment to take some wheels with me as well, but I wanted the tyres off and all the tyre places had already shut.
Still got to take another dead shell, them alloys, a dustbin full of copper wire (unfortunatly, still in the sheilding), 4 rads and a cat.

I work for an electrical wholesaler where we have pallets of bricks which go in the storage radiators, quite often the "travelling people" scrap men actually nick the bricks off the pallets and hide them in the scrap they collect.
Also we have had many a complaint from branches around the country of our Merc sprinters having the cat ground out when parked up over night, sometimes 2 or 3 vans in one go!

Well that was a mixed result.
4 not very nice pug 106 alloys - £33.90 1 Pug gearbox - £4.00
other bits n bobs too, got just under £60
I would have thought that the gearbox would get more than £4!! its bloody heavy!! oh well. It all helps towards the car fund. Managed to make about £300 this week on top of my wages!! happy times, if only i can do this every week.

I bought a car recently because I wanted (needed) the gearbox from it.
The car was already a CatC so wasn't too troubled that I would be weighing it in - it cost me £150.
After I got the gearbox out and cut the cat off it I loaded a bit of scrap in (probably no more than the weight of the 'box) and wheeled it up to the weighbridge, then had it lifted by forklift to remove the alloys which I brought back with me.
I got £220 for the car alone, then another £45 for the cat and a further £38 for the alloys. £303 return equalling a nice £153 profit and a free gearbox. All done & dusted within 24hrs of collecting the car.
Not too shabby!
