Morning chaps,
So my dilemma,
I've got a chance at an impreza wrx with 112,000 miles on it or my gtti which is a known quantity.
I have no real experience of imprezas but I know it will be quicker and corner better with 4wd. Parts will probably be easier to find but are the engines not supposed to be a little fragile in them?
Charades are quick for what they are and over 250bhp is possible on stock internals all from 993cc. I have another one to plunder for parts and they're well built but parts are rare and expensive.
This will be strictly for track use and not a road car.
Opinions please people.
Impreza vs gtti vid
Thanks
Ross

I'm assuming Cadwell will be one your regular tracks going by your location. If so an Impreza will be curse word. Best cars for round there that aren't specialist are hot hatches so Clio 16v, 205GTi, Saxo VTS, 106GTi etc.

If you're going on trackdays, that means that you want fun more than a quick lap time. For a limited budget, a small 2wd hatch is far more fun than a more powerful but heavier 4wd in my opinion. Not to mention that the Charade is just cool! It's the spiritual successor of the original Mini Cooper.

Got to be the Charade, apart from anything else, a cheap scooby is going to have had a hard life already and will in need of a lot of new bits (bushes/brakes) to get it to a safe standard to take on the track

You're having to ask which would give more smiles per lap?? As above, (fairly)big & heavy & safe 4x4 or small, light, nippy & WTF factor to annoy people on more 'normal' cars.

My mates who had WRX's both sold them after doing cadwell, due to them getting too hot, and eating fuel, they now run a clio 16v and a 16v seat cupra instead and say they have much more fun and costs are far less.

Well cadwell is my 'home track' so to speak so thats where all my track time is spent. Imprezas do look mightily quick round there and I like the idea of 4wd for wet days. I do love my GTTIs

THIS ^ is what i think of when i think of charade GTTI's THIS ^ is what I think of when i think of Subarus, that and their undeniable thirst for liquid dinosaurs. The Charade GTTI is a 100hp hot hatch, frankly, as a track toy, it will be barrels more fun, cheaper, more laughs, more upstarty on the track, you'll potentially outshine several better cars on the track and gain alot of respect for doing so. From the old auto car comparison of that, an XR2 and a nova GTE - 'Perfect driving position' 'Gear change is quick' 'Engine is technically light years ahead' 'front end dive and rear end lift when throttle is shut' - easily fixable. Light, nippy, fun. I know which I'd go for.

Is your gtti currently in road spec or already stripped out etc? I would choose Impreza if there was the possibility to keep the Charade on-road.

Charade GTTi all the way. My friend was overtaking Impreza's around castle combe in his throttle bodied Ax VTS granted it had a lsd in it but still ate them up with 'only' 170bhp ;D

my mate bought an ex track car impreza the gearbox blew after a week and after it had gone he found out apparantly the gearboxes on the impreza are curse word and arent up to the job when constantly abused, i forget how much he was quoted to fix it but he broke the car as it wasnt worth fixing.

Scooby everytime for me, but then i'm just not a fan of very small cars which aren’t imps or classic minis...
Plus the scoobys sound awesome....

Plus the scoobys sound awesome.... You know, that's the thing I dislike about imprezas most. They actually sound very nice with equal length manifolds and loose the naff rumble.

the best fun i've ever had on track, was in my humble starlet. It had some sort of unknown brand lowering springs and i had a set of Yokohama A048R tires which i used on track. On tight and twisty tracks i beated almost everyone except for a ligther and faster starlet. There where loads and loads of MR2 Turbo's behind me (was at an MR2 club trackday, and they weren't very pleased with me and my little starlet beating their 'holy' turbo engine'd MR2's ). And on long, faster tracks (Zandvoort for instance), the only thing stopping me having more fun, was the long straight, 75 hp and semislicks aren't a good combination for topspeed, but still i managed to keep up with BMW 325i's etc. I'd go for as light as possible with as much power as the car can handle. It felt my starlet could handle something like 25 hp more, anymore and the beautifull balance it had would be gone
