My wife's car developed the habit of wondering across lanes, when the throttle was applied or backed off. Replacing the lower wish bones sorted it. But now 8/9 months later on, the problem is back. And I did get an advisory on the MOT for the nearside lower arm bush. Having re read the Haynes manual it says the bolts MUST be torqued up with the car resting on it wheels.Which I neglected to do last time. My question is. Does the car have to be "insitu" as all four wheels on ground, or can the front wheels be on chocks of wood or ramps. Because otherwise there is no way I'll be able to get to the bolts to do them up without a pit.

surely if you chocked the car front and rear it would be at the same level as it is when it's on the ground - just get the back up on axle stands and the front up on ramps?

I've even heard rumors about bushes ripping if you tighten them with the car in the air. I've done it myself countless times myself without problems mind you

The bushes need to be tightened with the wishbone lifted to avoid them being twisted at normal ride height. You just need to put a jack under the wishbone or hub and lift it to the position it is in when the weight is on the wheels.
If that picture is your wife's car's wishbone you have polybushes with a steel crushtube in the middle. These don't need to be tightened at right height, just greased well. It is only bonded rubber bushes that need to be tightened at ride height

it's a mk6 escort. I used some spare rusty steelies I had in the garden, and a trolley jack and blocks of wood on the rear. The rubber bushes were ripped on the removed wish bone. It has knackered the outter edge of a less than a month old tyre. Damn it.
