I suspect that it's got a reputation a bit like body filler, if it's not applied correctly, or applied over a sound surface, or used by people to "hide" things, then yes there will be problems in the future, but this does not make it a bad product, perhaps just one that gets bad press

Great progress!! Can I ask what kind of shutz you use please. On another forum I use a lot shutz gets absolutely slated so just wondering what your opinions are on it. I'm interested because I have used 3Ms version on my car. All the noise I've heard about shutz is that it splits and traps water. My car will be a weekend and sunny eather car so i'm not too worried and it's been re-seamsealed underneath prior to the shutz being applied and then Waxoyled. Cheers Dave Dave Its just the Standard Tetrosyl stuff, but I suspect that your 3M stuff will be better Personally I've never had any problems, but I always paint it over stonechip anyway, I think the key might also to be to make sure that the surface that you painting onto is clean and grease free Tony

Just caught up with this thread again, and just wanted to congratulate you on your fabrication. You have shown that once you learn the basics, and then practice hard, and learn from your mistakes almost anything is achievable I particularly like your "can do" and "will try anything" approach, and can't wait to see you overcome your next challenge And as others have said, if there was an award for Coolest Uncle of the Year, then you would surely win that

Tony your work never fails to please! I'm just about to paint the floor of my Manta and would like to refit some sound pads, the ones youve used, are they the tetrosyl ones? the pattern looks like the original Opel stuff. Thanks again for the inspiration! Scott. Scott they are Hadrian panel ones from my local motorfactor, but I imagine that the Tetrosyl ones are the same I love that your attention to detail is high enough that you consider that swage line unacceptable. Got to admit if it was me I probably would have either left it as it as or fixed it with filer, but I know you will do the decent thing and finesse the metal until its right, and fear of cocking the wing up in the process be damned! As "Carsie" Says its either right or it isn't

Its been a while since the car was running, so decided to reconnect the battery and see what happened Being reliable German engineering it fired up straight away, and settled into a nice steady idle, but there was a bit of a stink of petrol, a quick look underneath showed a pool of petrol forming at the rear. I bit of poking later and the culprit was traced to a rotten fuel pipe So cut a section out and replaced with a longer section of hose leak sorted Then decided to try the doors on, to make sure everything still lined up and to give a datum point to fix the front wing in place Didn't look too bad, except the swage line on the front wing doesn't quite line up with the door I'm a little surprised as this is supposed to be a genuine BMW wing, so it should have been spot on, will need a little easing and tugging, but should be able to improve that

However I did once apply satin black over stonechip when giving a vehicle a 'vinyl roof' Ha Ha that brings back memories, I remember when vinyl roofs were all the rage, I peeled one off a Mk5 Cortina Ghia in the scrap yard and fitted it to my basic spec one, what with that the fake plastic wood door cappings and bits of carpet on the door cards, it felt proper posh, I can tell you ;D ;D

Stone chip used was Upol Gravitex, but I also have a Sata stonechip gun, that has a much wider suction tube and nozzle and will spray just about anything you put through it, I've tried the normal ones before and you often have to thin the stonechip or shutz before you can spray it, this obviously reduces the stipple effect
I've used stuff from Bodyline and Wurth before, which can also give a heavy stipple finish. I also find that if you spray it on thick and leave for about 10 -15 minutes, then blow over it with the stonechip gun taken out of the container, ie just blowing air over it, it can agitate the coating to create more of a stipple, which as its getting drier will hold its shape more
The reason for using both was to get the stonechip to provide the heavy stipple finish to replicate the original, but stonechip has to be coated with something, as it like primer and needs something to seal it on top, hence the shutz.
I guess I could have used just shutz, but I suspect that the difference between the old and new would have been clearly visible and that was not the effect I was after
I have seen much more rubbery spray on type seam sealer, but never been able to find out what its called or where to buy it from, this is OEM on new BMW's etc
