You're best picking up entire cars when they turn up and get the aluminium steering (£30 ish)
Aside from a set of ballraces and a bunch of money on bodyshells and wheels and tyres you should be ok.

First thing I really consistently raced was an M01. In the classes I currently race, I reckon they'd still be competitive. Delicate steering parts were the only problem and nowadays parts availability can be a bit hit or miss. Picked up this beauty the other day. Mid-early Team Associated RC10, not a brilliant ebay listing and 2 minutes up the road from home. Too far gone to be a pristine resto but with very minor work will be a great runner and a nice display car. Just a little distraction from the serious business of Tamiya stuff. . Calibra TA02 Then turning this: Into this: so i'm not afraid to use it. This turned up... which I'm definitely too afraid to use ... and I need to finish this: But I need to do some real car stuff too along with grown up adult kitchen fixing and stuff what grown ups do.

Sorry, not been here much. That looks ace and I like those wide rims. Anyone noticed that it doesn't sound like a TD5 yet? Only 3 or 4 people have picked up that mine isn't quite right for what it looks like.

I don't have any more bits for it. Just the drill/tool itself. It's been in my garage for nearly 20 years and I've never needed it.

Well I had a parcel delivery... Despite the poor but accurate listing and the rubbish pictures, what I ended up getting was a nice Mk1 Rough Rider in great condition apart from the destroyed body. A fresh set of wheels and tyres and a repaired original body like so... Then a bit of orange and some stickers. Repairs to original body (paint stripped in brake fluid took 24h) Sent from my stash of things using proboards

Don't even know how I made it onto the list (probably overuse of MS Paint) but thank you.
Got lots of stuff to catch up in now too.

I have this and it's no good to me if you are in need. Seems to have stopped working but the flex doesn't look great so might just be that. Sent from my toilet using proboards

Today has been a trying day what with putting my back out eating breakfast, a trial at work due to misbehaving Land Rovers and a parcel I really want not turning up yet.... When I got home Monza Nikki said to me "you've not looked at your phone have you" "No" Then she ran away and hid. I checked and I did indeed have a veritable stream of messages from her. As it transpires, in turning my splitty around while cleaning it, she had a bit of an accident. Not sure insurance would even cover it. As far as I can tell, the roof is ok and the floor and engine look fine but basically everything else is just smashed quite literally to pieces Sent from beer using proboards

I've done a few more cars I think but here's a picture of Sir Barrington Pointybeak Yellow feathers on the roof of the last Sand Scorcher I finished. Predictable boxart I'm afraid. Next one will be custom. Sadly it's been trodden on or similar so it's currently being reshaped. Nice to not have to strip paint off it. Another early Rough Rider on its way too. Never thought I'd get one of these things but the originals are criminally cheap now. Less than the re releases. Sent from Monday using proboards

That's an inconvenient length (that's what she said....)
It's not easy getting a picture of the angle and now I have dirty knees. The props sit not too far away from horizontal but there's a chassis in the way of any picture.
Oh. Just thought of something.

All Disco 1s are coil sprung, Disco 2s had air on 7 seater or as an option on 5 seater. Easy to convert though.
A tdi is an easy thing to use for conversions, a TD5 would be a pain. Auto would make relocation the shifter nice and easy.
LDV400 or equivalent and a 300 tdi auto.
Not sure what the wheelbase is on the LDV but if you need more than 100 inches then you're in to expensive Defender territory. Maybe an L200 would have the length you need. Woof.
Or as you say, axles and transfer box etc.

If I remember I'll do a measure and a picture tomorrow.
Personally I'd go for a Land Rover chassis and running gear then just re-body. You'll likely have clearance issues over the engine and the gear selectors and steering will be a challenge. Not sure about the weight difference between a van and a 4x4 ....
Aside from that, I'd be interested to see what you come up with. I have 2 naked Discoverys if you need pics or measurements.

The old man always used to have fun cars (it's all relative I guess) but SD1s progressing from 2600S, 3500, VDP then the Vitesse, Renault 21 Turbo and Rover 220 turbo then an 850T5 estate and sadly now an eminently dull Audi TT.
Mother has a short and fairly unexceptional car history save a couple of the early ones. Princess VDP1100, Allegro mk1, Nissan Sunny 1.3, Renault 21 phase 1, Renault 21 phase 2, Honda Jazz.
Neither of them seem very interested in vehicular transport although my mother did observe that my current Monza is the worst car she's know me to drive. I think it's because it wasn't shiny for 2 years.

I always wanted a Monza GSE, I did not count on not being able to get in and out of it by 40.
Such is life.

Still got the remains of it. Way beyond sensible restoration but will help with other cars.
