Well, I laid it up in Feb when the MOT and tax ran out. Battery went flat, so gave it another slug of E-On's best and it came back from the dead (Lazarus brand, I think....). Anyhoo, once eldest child's wedding was disposed of, money became available again and it was dragged back from storage and run up, then the dreadded day was booked. Long and the short of it is, after a damn good wash, allowing to warm through and thrashing the brakes within an inch of getting smelly, the old heap passed it's test with no advisories, which is odd as I haven't done anything apart from a new tyre and radiator in the last year. Oh well, must be like a good wine and improving with age......

Did the wet vac work to get the hairs out? my range rover has loads of short dog hairs stuck in the headlining, I have tried upholsteery cleaner and sticky tape but there are still quite a few left. What were you doing with the dog? ?

I'm interested whether the black B post sections are steel or ally - if steel I'd be happier seeing them welded in and anchored to the rear tubs in some way to replicate the roof section. I looks a good system, but I's rather see a 'stripped' one first before putting any cash into one....

Cracking little cars, just be aware they do rust. The 1.1 is a screamer of an engine and being a K, you can lob all of them in (1.8VVC/Turbos are quite good fun in 650kg...). Wheels are Triumph PCD which means most Triumphs, Marina, Ital, Maestro, Montego, MGF/TF wheels will fit but remember the arches are restricted in size. They are also tardis-like inside with the seats down. I bought a 1.1 Kensington which was en route to the scrapyard six years ago for £50 for spares; it's still going strong and had new rear arches and fuel tank this year, next project is either rebuild the engine or swap it out for a bit more poke. Have a good poke around and if you find a good one, grab it!

Hmmmm.... these guys are literally just up the road from me and have a kit for the MGF/TF that keeps the MG look. Seeing as I have a battered bonnet and wings and a respray would be needed, hmmmm...http://rps-ltd.info/news.html

The whole Metro/MGF subframe carries all suspension mounts on itself as well as engine mounts; nice compact design and easy to remove in one lump.

Just a quick update on this; pass window now works, had to change the rad for a new all-alloy one after the old one ceased to cool properly, it's gained a leaky rear light, had 4k thrown on it in all weathers and is SORN awaiting an MOT which will happen after my daughters wedding. It's been a good years hoonage.....

I built a Phaeton in 1988. Handled ok and went well for a 1300GT engine. I'll leave it at that, having dealt directly with Dutton and had full experience of his 'aftercare'..... Still about as far as I know...

I ran tubes on the GT when I had it as one alloy continuously leaked. Even did track days with them; when I took the old tyres off they were as good as new. Sadly the old boy who did the job originally had retired and the new bloke got jittery about tubing tubeless. So now I have a slow puncture....

When I had my Marina GT, I bought the ST manual for it and modified the suspension to ST-spec, which at the time was easy as late Itals had ST designed front damper mounts as standard. With 175 tyres and ex-TR7 alloys, SPAX dampers and stiffer anti-roll bars it would do Coram at Snetterton at 70+mph and was extremely chuckable on a B road blast. I 'Stage One'd the engine and it had a dead flat 105lbft torque curve... the rolling road operator said he'd seen people spend fortunes trying to get that! They certainly had some good knowledge about their product!

Resetting the windows looks complicated but it isn't; in fact once you get past the initial "Ooohhh" of the car they are dead easy to work on. Full MGR manuals are on Bay of the E for not too much (and are bl**dy big and heavy....). Well done on a future classic, mate!

The closer this gets to launching, the more I think it stands a better chance of putting the three 'wise' dimbo's out of service. Good lineup, bring it on!

Sabine isn't in it anymore. She's too busy racing officially. I'll cancel my order for extra Kleenex then ? She definitely IS in new TG, it was in the news a couple of weeks back that Evans got Ill whilst filming a TG section where Sabine drove him around Laguna Seca. It was never stated that Sabine would be a full-time presenter, I guess she'll do little guest features like she did on old TG. Made me laugh when I saw the bleating about Evans being carsick - he's not the first to be ill being a passenger in a car being driven on the limit and he won't be the last. It's a different ball game when you're not in control...

Spookily, Evans was on tonight's Top Gear repeat on BBC3; the one where they killed another Marina and then mechanically destroyed the Lancia Stratos replica by trying to prove how 'cr@p' it was...

The way I see this is that at some point in late 2014/early 2015, JC was offered a shedload of £££ by Amazon Prime to bring his team across and boost their standings. He lamps (allegedly) some 'producer' (gofer) and reports himself, therefore starting disciplinary action which ended up with him getting released by the BBC. Because they got rid, he was now clear to do whatever he wanted, so a few phone calls later had JM and RH on board and then AW as producer when their contracts expired. Meanwhile, BBC now has a massive marketing machine earning a shedload of cash with nothing to drive it forward, hence the scrappy scramble to find someone to host Top Gear (the business). The show is the shop window so the money and marketing guys have had a field day but don't understand the market one iota, so they drafted in CE to front the show as he is 'safe hands'. Will it work? Dunno. JC nicked the idea for Top Gear from Driven (Mike Brewer, Penny Mallory and Jason Plato) but instead of having genuine audience participation they hogged the limelight and the audience was just that... pretty faces to fill a studio.
Old Top Gear format was tired; the banter was still 'sort of' there but they were scraping the bottom of the barrel; the new one will probably be the old stuff with higher budgets - tv is notorious for not changing what 'works' even if the world says 'enough, its boring!!!'.
Future BBC TG - Evans as executive producer and not on screen, Chris Harris/Sabine Schmidt plus an unknown to do the walking/talking/driving with guest presenters doing prerecorded slots on their subjects and of course Stig vs Sabine in top end shootouts. Don't even just stick to cars; there's some cracking stuff lurking out there...

Surely it is the difference between cancelling a policy and having a policy cancelled. You've effectively cancelled a policy because they won't cover the area you have moved to. Rather than them cancelling a policy on you because you couldn't pay it. ^^^ what he said.... I was going to say the same but not so eloquently....

Okay, idea from the Twilight Zone here.... would it be possible to build a tubular exhaust manifold instead of the cast iron boat anchor and mount the turbo at the rear of the head above the clutch housing? It'll lose a bit of weight from the front and may give a more direct run to the inlet manifold. Just thinkin', like...

Gone back to the 'early' spec nose then... Rover's had that front as standard until Renault decided it was a good idea and nicked it, hence the big plasticky grille they got fitted with. Tidy motor for the wedge, though....

Dunno why people get so bent out of shape by a Q plate, at least you can use the darn car on the road legally and it's a good conversation starter! I ran a Rover 420D on a Q plate.... it was an oddball as it had the top of the range interior and climate pack but MGZS running gear and the engine had been 'fiddled with'...handled beautifully and went like a bat out of hell. Built 1998 at a place near Oxford. Never could prove exactly what it was but it was an animal.
Good to see this getting closer, it's all the little details that make it special. Well done.
