Having investigated the bonnet release problem, it was just me being thick, the bonnet wasn't popping up when the cable was pulled Boogieman has kindly got me the build sheet for the car from BMW's system (cheers!), and these are the boxes that the first owner ticked: Colour MOJAVEBRAUN METALLIC (331) Upholstery SANDBEIGE VOLLEDER MONTANA (0553) Prod. date 1994-06-24 Order options No. Description 214 AUTOMATIC STABILITY CONTROL+TRACTION 216 SERVOTRONIC 250 SIDE AIRBAGS F RR COMPARTMENT PASSENGERS 288 LT/ALY WHEELS 302 ALARM SYSTEM 401 SLIDING/VENT ROOF, ELECTRIC 428 WARNING TRIANGLE 438 WOOD TRIM 441 SMOKERS PACKAGE 473 ARMREST, FRONT 500 HEADLIGHT WASHER SYS/INTENSIVE CLEANING 534 AUTOMATIC AIR CONDITIONING 540 CRUISE CONTROL 555 ON-BOARD COMPUTER 672 CD CHANGER BMW FOR 6 CDS 676 HIFI LOUDSPEAKER SYSTEM 686 DIVERSITY-FUNCTION AERIAL Annoyingly, at some point in the past, someone's nicked the CD changer. All the wiring's there fortunately, so I'll have to have a search around for a replacement. While replacing the interior light bulb in the boot I established you could easily fit 2 of me in the boot (I'm 6ft) so if anyone needs a cool car to dump a body, drop me a PM!

OK, Stick, Wheels, Noisy Exhaust. I'll see what I can do!
I tried to open the bonnet to have a look at the lovely V8 check the screenwash yesterday, and there was a little tug on the cable, and then nothing.
I'm guessing the bonnet release cable has snapped, so that's today's little repair job!

This is the latest and largest addition yet to my fleet. The story of how I ended up with it is hereIt's my first V8 and I'm dead chuffed with it. There are a few niggly things wrong with it, but these things are well supported by a decent owners forum and loads of 'how to' guides on the web. Hopefully I'll manage to keep all the smoke in the several tons of wiring that are in it. Thus far the only thing I've managed to do to is retrieve a tape that was jammed in the tape deck - 'Now that's what I call music 11' - it may have been in there a while Plans are wheels and a drop, but that may be in the longer term (or at least when the weather's warmer) because I'm going to be a dad for the first time at the end of next month. It's absolutely lovely to drive, and pretty rapid too, it has a switchable sports/auto box and 290bhp through the rear wheels so for a 2 ton motor, it's pretty spritely! I'll try and keep the thread up to date with how I get on with it!

The E32 with a '21 on tow would be a winning combination!
I'll try and make my first RR gathering this year, if I put a tenner a week away between now and then I may just be able to afford the fuel!
Running a 7 on coilovers is the ultimate sacrifice I reckon. A car renowned for its comfy waftiness, slammed hard on its bump stops! I need to investigate if mine's got self levelling or just springs and shocks, fingers crossed for the latter

I was looking at Camskill's website for winter tyres last week - most sizes listed as 'out of stock' The wife's 2005 3 series touring handles the snow pretty well for a RWD, the traction control seems to cope, with only a few sideways moments thus far. The 7 series however does not handle it well at all! ABS working overtime, and just shy of 300bhp through the rear wheels means my ring's going like a rabbit's nose all the way to work.

Same here, my works laptop has anti virus software that has started having a pink fit every time I load RR. Recently it's been causing my browser (IE7) to crash and start 'not responding' too

This was posted earlier HEREIt looks like VOSA have been bullied into putting this data into the public domain, and as such the quality of data is pretty naff. I've not looked but apparently there's an Audi 80 on the spreadsheet that was registered in the 1880s

Thanks everyone! ;D I'm over the moon with it to be honest, I had a look through the paperwork for it last night and it's been loved by each of its owners. All but 2 of the services have been done by main agents, with big bills to prove, and the last owner covered less than 5000 miles in the 5 years he had it. The only issues I've found with it are the ashtray lid won't shut properly, there's a tape jammed in the tape deck, the digi display for the climate's on its way out, and the steering's a bit wandery at motorway speeds. All jobs I won't have to do till it gets warmer, and ones I'll probably enjoy fixing! Oh and it's not as heavy a drinker as I expected, provided I can resist the urge to plant my right foot too often

I was going to say, 13mpg sounds pesimistic, unless you have an issue with your right foot Congrats on the new motor, it is perchance the Champagne coloured one with brown leather that was for sale? Cheers! It was actually an Autotrader find, really badly listed and with a tiny photograph, more of a darker bronze colour than champagne really. Thanks Rob! Mine's an early E38 with the M60B40 V8 lump. It has the dreaded Nikasil treated block but I'm pretty sure by 150k any bore wear issues would have already shown themselves if they were going to. I'll be driving miss daisy at least for a bit and see what mpg figures are achievable, good to hear that I stand a good chance of doing better than 13mpg. The road the owner lives on is a fairly steep country lane with some nasty compacted icy slush on it, so hopefully I won't ditch the thing before I get to the motorway!

Having had a loong list of water cooled VWs over the years, and getting a bit dissillusioned with the whole VW 'scene' thing, with the help of RR I've broadened my horizons to all makes of car, and it's made life so much more interesting!
I've found myself lusting after everything from wobbly old citroens to big power J drift stuff, although I've never had the balls to stray too far from 80s/90s VWs, just because I know what goes wrong through 10 years spent spannering the things.
I had a brief dalliance with a broken E21 3 series (bought through RR) in the summer, and so I've started looking at other Bavarian metal to have a play with. There's a little addition to the whitby family coming in February, so I fancied an E34 5 series to carry the little fella and all his kit round in. After looking at a lot of overpriced dogs, my gaze strayed up the model range, and I went to look at a car on Sunday that I really took a liking to.
I ummed and aahed, and was unsure about taking the plunge, and yesterday I read a comment Alistair made in the American Scrappage thread that really hit home:
Consequently I left a deposit on the car, and I take delivery tonight - of a 1994 BMW 740i. A brown one. 2 tons of expensive german electronics that does 13mpg round town....
Thanks RR ;D

Just to throw an alternative into the mix, Mk3 VRs with little/no test are dirt cheap at the moment. There was one local to me with long test but a scabby body on ebay for £650 BIN. Non tested ones can be had a lot cheaper, and AFAIK the conversion is no more difficult than doing an ABF 16v swap.
If you wanted to go 5 stud, you can wheel the complete front subframe out from under the Mk3, and bolt it up under your Mk2, and likewise with the disc braked rear beam. Also you could make some of your money back selling off some off the VR interior bits.

As has been said at that money with all that ticket, snap it up. Plenty of scope to chuck money at what it needs and you'll probably get your money back when you sell.

I set the new years resolutions in motion before the new year, as the impending arrival of our first-born means we needed to be sorted with at least one reliable means of transport!
So I sold our modernish 2001 Leon Cupra, which was proving to be more trouble and more costly than it was worth, which left us in need of a sensible family hauler.
The wife's expensive (but excellent) taste kicked in and we ended up replacing it with a 06 BMW 3 series touring, modern and plastic, but above all safe, frugal, good looking and lovely to drive.
I then sold my clunker Mk3 Golf, which was proving to be reliable enough and an ideal cheap smoker, but just a bit 'meh'
All candidates from the VW stable I've either already owned, or are as boring as what I've just sold, so I'm currently looking for an E34 or E30 BMW, in that order, but can't find anything cheap enough (ie sub 1k) that's worth having!
Not the worst dilemma in the world but a dilemma nonetheless!
