Re-discovered RR after a few years away, spent the last few weeks reading through some of the amazing build threads on here. Took a break from fiddling with cars to buy a house, get married and now got kiddie #1 on the way I still have the old Passat wagon though, it now says 257000 miles on the odometer, so nearly 90k since I rebuilt the 2.0 16v lump that's in it. It's my second car now though, have a 2003 BMW 530i for daily duties but couldn't get rid of the Passat ;-) It's currently taxed and insured but has been off the road a couple of weeks waiting for me to sort a duff front wheel bearing. It's been all over the country, wales, lake district, west country. Some great memories of trips away with my girlfriend/fiancée/wife as it's been in our lives so long! Some stupid old woman drove into it in 2010 on a roundabout, needed a new wing, bonnet, slam panel but thankfully the inner wing was fine. Mended it with £60 worth of bits. Drove round with it primer for 6 months until I could afford to get it painted. Last year I rebuilt the rear beam with new bushes and replaced all the hard and flexi brake lines, fitted an eibach rear ARB at the same time which sharpened the handling up loads- lift off understeer can be provoked now Had some rust cut out of the sills and patched up, it will need new sills at some point, I really want to learn to weld at some point, so envious of the guys on here that practically rebuild whole cars from flat sheets of steel. And now for a few snaps from the last few years... new axle: went here: learnt how to flare brake pipes and made shiny new cunifer lines: My mate ali came round to weld the sills back up in his slammed VW Type 3 : drove to the lake district: and then took it to wales, was scared stiff of cracking the sump getting it here, some big old rocks in the "road"!

got all the mods declared on the passat- wheels, suspension, engine, brakes, lights etc etc. I'm with brentacre and they don't change anything to update mods part way through the policy neither unless its a significant increase in BHP. they work on the basis that any suspension or aestetic upgrades don't increase the premium at all, all its only when you go up into the next bhp band they increase the premium. it cost me another £75/year to go from 112bhp to 170bhp when i changed the engine which I didnt think was too bad considering in 24 and only have one years NCB due to not having a car while I was at uni..

me and my dad had a great day up there, although I'm a little bit sunburnt! ive got loads of pics still on the camera which ill add to this thread tomorrow thought that jerry bloke off "salvage squad" who was commentating in the arena bit was quite entertaining, he properly embarrassed some guy in a barried up saxo "wow thats the biggest exhaust ive ever seen, whats it packing under the hood?" "erm its a standard 1.2, pretty much stock" hehehe the "royal male" van was excellent on a side note, one of my dads workmates was up there in his lovely MGB, and he had no issues all day, in the one make section theres always like minded people around so it seems that people keep an eye out for the cars around them.

tyres will last for years and years if kept in a dark garage. its the UV light that destroys them. just checked my bridgestones and they're week 25 2008 think some of this scaremongery came from a batch of premium tyres that appeared last year that were all a good few years old but were being sold as new- think they were goodyear eagles or something?

I can't come out with anything half decent after a few hours so I don't bother any more past decals and flames. Whats everyones XBL tag? We should get a retro race or two going on or something ^^ Also: @ Lufbramatt - you now have the coolest job out of everyone I know. Now off-topic and out of your control, BUT: < rant > Make them stop putting such chunky magnets in them, theres no skill involved any more! On that note, bring back the crash rails that clip on to the side of the track.. and the hay bails! < / ran t> hehe cheers i start on the 29th of june, cant wait ive heard quite a lot of people say that about the magnets, so i will do my best! i get the impression the designers have quite a big say in it as its a relatively small design team. i will keepyou posted!

ABF has digifant 3 EFi, has got a lambda, dual knock sensors, sequential injection so they're suprizingly good on fuel. 150bhp stock. although its digifant, it will still need the entire engine loom and ecu etc changing (can keep fuel pump though) if the van is on digifant 2. Found in mk3 golfs, mk4 passats, mk1 seat toledos and mk2 seat ibiza cupras.
9A is the earlier 2.0 16v which ran on KE-motronic (basically a slightly more advanced version of K-jetronic) with a lambda probe and cat converter to control emissions. found in corrados and mk3 passats

nice pics makes me wanna start playing GT4 again slighly different but still related, one of my mates designs scalextric cars for a living (incidentally i've just got a job there too doing the same thing, if i get my way look out for lots of retro themed airfix kits in the near future lol), heres a pic of the CAD model she did of a lotus cortina:

this cost me £300 with a years ticket and 6 months tax on it too: 3 years and nearly 50,000 miles later its still sat on the drive and has taken us all over the place, from the lake district to cornwall

my passat was like that when I put -40mm springs on it. a set of JOM lowering spring caps on the front and its spot on now it doesnt help that VW cars of that era all seem to have been designed with "lower" wheelarches at the back, so although the chassis is probably sitting level, the arches give the impression of rake.

mk2 golfs wernt galvanised but mk3 passats (1989-93) were, and are full of cavity wax from the factory. they have a couple of spots where they can rust (inside the tailgate on estates) but ive yet to see one with anything major. had to have a couple of 50p size patches welded in the sills on mine but thats just down to the silly design of the "GT" bodykit it had on. oddly mk3 passats seem to last better than their facelifted mk4 brothers.

what spec golf and springs have you got?
mk 2 golf 16v springs are 15mm lower than standard mk2 golf springs, so might fit in the height range you want.

when one of the exhaust hangers snapped on the passat, on a horrible dark rainy night, i randomly had a pair of waterproof overtrousers and a cheapo caguole so was able to crawl under the car to wrap some wire round it without ruining my going out clothes took about 20 mins of driving round to find a kerb high enough tho! think when theyve resurfaced all the roads in canterbury theyve just built them up higher so all the kerbs are really low!

I always use the same bloke down in rochester, always have had a good rappore with him and he likes the old passat- got some nice compliments off him when I tokk it down there just after putting the new engine in and he passed it with no advisories just told me to nip the exhaust clamps up a bit as it had a tiny blow. made me laugh a few weeks later when he failed my dads 53-plate octavia for having a broken catch on one of the seatbelts (have to push the button in when you fasten it, it held perfectly), so good to know he's doing his job properly.

i remember my dads old mk2 escort had one of those yellow zeibart stickers in the window, always thought it was ironic that it was the tinworm that killed that back in 1993.
