Decided to order the polycarbonate for the side and rear windows today. I was pleasantly suprised that it was still available as I had assumed that it would have all gone to make shields and barriers. Well, a lot has and some suppliers are prioritising these uses but I found a couple that can supply with only an extra week added to the shipping time.

Well done! I always feel like getting the bodywork done is a big chunk of a project sorted. Proper milestone. Agreed. It has been a very long journey.

Friday, as it was my son Alex's birthday and we had a gocart racing/bingo/trivial pursuit party, was the first lockdown day that I didn't work on the car! However, I have made quite a bit of progress over last few weeks and there is not a lot of bodywork left to do.
The roof and doors were the last big jobs (still have to make a rear diffuser but that can wait). Roof is on, passenger door is well on the way and the driver's door is in progress.
All that will be left after this will be details and I can then start the paint process as I have decided, finally, on the paint scheme.

Yes, I know it is June, had a senior moment and couldn't be arsed to redo it :-)

The only downside is that it will be uncomfortable driving around on hot days, but this is England :-) I was thinking more sweltering whilst queueing up for the start line myself..says he also running a hardtop on a convertible (for aero). Well, there is also that, but if you want to go fast....... :-)

Correct, the car was nice as a softtop but the roll cage spoilt and lines and the aero would be rubbish as I would also have to get rid of the windows. Less weight but a lot more drag. Same reasons I welded the hartop onto the Spitfire. Roll hoop spoilt the lines (and wouldn't have been able to get a soft top over it and have it high enough to actually do anything). Add in rubbish aero and a bit of a stiffness boost and it was a bit of a no brainer... Agreed, even my lightweight top ties the front screen to the rear panels. Every little bit of stiffness helps. The only downside is that it will be uncomfortable driving around on hot days, but this is England :-)

Wow you're not wrong that it sounds weird! I was expecting a dull fibreglass-like thunk. Not sure why, now that you mention the thickness, but it's still strange! Great work though I assume the FHC is for aero purposes rather than stiffness, given the thickness of the roof. Figreglass parts are usually usually made fairly thick and rigid, this is neither :-) Correct, the car was nice as a softtop but the roll cage spoilt and lines and the aero would be rubbish as I would also have to get rid of the windows. Less weight but a lot more drag.

do they stop the door from being opened , too? Yes, as they lock the top of the window to the car. There is a release button on both sides so they can be released from outside and inside the car, you just have to remember to release it before getting out but I guess you only forget once :-)

Finally started the job I have been thinking about for over a year and not been looking forward to tackling, door window frames. Made the second frame yesterday and started on the fitting process. I have no idea how I am going to secure it as it needs to be pretty rigid, so I am just going for it and will see how it pans out.

It sometimes feels that I am working in a fog, but I didn't realise that it would show up in a video! :-) Apologies for the poor quality. I have run it through an online enhancer, hence the watermark in the corner, so it is better than it was.

Sometimes you have to buy something just for one job. Having trimmed the door hinges I needed to clean up the threads. I didn't have a 3/4" 16tpi tap, but I have now :-) OEM hinges weigh a total of 930gms, these now weigh 351gms, over 1/2 kg saving just on these small items.

Passenger door now has all its parts. 2.1kg, 1kg heavier than the driver's door which is 100% carbon. Just sitting in the hole with no hinges or locks.
