MOT passed. Woooohoo. Took many hours of head scratching swearing and fiddling about to get the indicators working properly. All down to a small bad earth. The lights were dim and the nearside indicator really slow and not very bright. Put in a decent earth and then all of a sudden Ive got good indicators AND somehow reversing lights. They have never worked in over 30 years infact I didnt think I had them ....!! The headlights are brighter and stop lights too. So I was able to race back from work jump in the fulvia, which started first time. Then get to the garage for the last few minutes before they closed. Steve the MOT guy gave it a good once over and there we go ...done. its been 17 years since the last one and was a strange experience to drive to the petrol station and fill up for the first time in all those years. A young lad in a corsa also filling up gave me a compliment. Though it was probably because it sounded like an old tractor with the blowing exhaust. It was really good to be able to actually go on a bit of a run in the car and really get it warmed up. Found a few niggles that need looking at. The exhaust has started to blow on the joint. and the clutch is a bit slippy. The gear box crunches if you change gear too quick but I think it used to do that when they were new? The rad got a bit hotter than it should but it was really hot today and the thermostat is a bit sticky. So theres a few things still to sort out but the list is ALOT shorter than a month ago.

A few pictures of stuff thats been going on Steering track rod and steering box through the wheel arch... Oh yeah tonnes of room to get that out... but heres it disconnected. the other side bushes to replace I thought these would fit but I'm now thinking they are series two outer ones? And look what I found in a pile of old fulvia bits from 20 years ago and an original scissor jack courtesy of Marcus (ex his Zagato 1300) I thought I had them somewhere in the loft or the garage. So a bit of a clean up in the electrolysis rust eater and they will be a little bit of history to go with the car. Ive got a spare wheel cover somewhere in my junk I'm sure. Also Ive got to work out a way to stop the exhaust touching on the floor pan. Ive fitted the later series 2 exhaust that flows better and is correct for the carbs and head on the car now but the shape of it doesnt go quite correctly down the dent in the floor pan where the original exhaust ran. Maybe its a matter of get it off again heating it up and blacksmithing it in to the right fit? I think just a small tweak to bend it should do.

Its not balljoints that have gone but the central tie bar on the steering. Thats not a simple track rod end replacement kind of thing but the whole bar. Got one coming from germany but the fulvia is not going to be ready for the classic breakfast at Brooklands. Oh well its been off the road for 17 years so whats a bit longer going to matter. Last night I took the bar off which was not very easy as you have to take the outer trackrod ends off first to get to it. Its a bit cramped in there and only about 1000 tiny little turns of a 19mm spanner through a hole that smaller than i can get my hand through while holding anything. And I had to do it while craning my neck under the wheel arch. Should have done it when I had the whole subframe out and could have got to it easily. Going to do the bushes on the ends of the front anti roll bar and sort the leak on the steering box.....should have done it when I had the subframe out. SHOULD HAVE DONE IT .... well you get the idea...DOH Found that the flasher for the indicators is probably faulty as it only works when it feels like it (and as its probably 50 years old). A new electronic one should be better instead of the bi-metal ancient tin can. Its now blowing fuses and getting hot. Got a spare flasher from Fulvia1436 to try and a new 2 pin from the spares shop and lots of fuses. After all that then its just headlamp beam alignment and hopefully a clean ticket....WWOOOHOOO.

The fulvia didnt pass the MOT today but only on a few very easy to fix things. The main one being that one of the top ball joints which although was new broke on the day before the test. Think it was just a bad one ? One bush on the end of the anti roll bar had too much play. (cant think how I missed that) But that was an advisory not an actual fail. The adjustment of the headlights was slightly too high. And one of the indicator bulbs was not flashing brightly enough (got to be a dodgy earth on the left rear) That side has a slightly rusty holder that I couldnt get the screws out of without breaking the holder. Breaks were good and all the other bushes and etc were good. Very small leak on the steering box but I recon thats where I spilt a little when I topped it up. Horribly failed the emissions test but as it doesnt need to pass that as its too old to qualify for that. So quite happy with that small list to do. What was weird was that Lancia do not come up on the list of car manufacturers any more. It goes from Lamborghini to Landrover no Lancia in between. So he had to add it in as Other and then fill in manually that it was a Lancia. Sad that Lancia is disappearing from a list like that.

I didn't know they made those starters for the Fulvia. What's the price? I didn't see it. I've used them on Fiats and Alfas they are great and over here they actually cheaper than OEM replacement starters. Great to hear you've made progress. the starters are £311 from these guys. www.ccw-tools.com/WOSP-LMS333---Lancia-Fulvia-S1-4-speed-Reduction-Gear-Starter-Motor__p-36577.aspxthe dynators are £590 from these www.lynxae.co.uk/Products-Dynators.htm This is for the base model they have extras a quite a price if you look. Ive not used either or have any affiliation with them just did a google search? Maybe if I get flush someday I will splash out.... but I don't think so, not at the moment.

Colourtune extension piece: before: slightly yellow after: blue heres the syncronisation between the carbs. I fit one of these to the pair of blanked off holes in the inlet manifold. Lancia put these into the manifold for this job. You had to use a special mercury manometer tube. But these bike carb syncronisers work perfectly. For about £15 off E bay. The two little turnoffs in the tube are useful to turn down the bouncing around of the needles. So just turn the syncronisation screw between the carbs until they are equal on the gauges and they should be operating at the same pressure through the pairs. this tune up has made a huge difference to the running of the carbs. I hadn't realised how important the float level was on these solexes. But runs pretty good now.

Luke How do you rate the Colour Tune, do you think it makes a difference? Color tune is great as it actually gives visual to the tune up. When I use it I also listen and really pay attention to the revs. The solexes are great carbs but mine are worn and go out of tune easily. So when you are setting the slow running mixture the tricky bit is getting the mixture on the right side of the change in revs. You turn in the mixture screw until the mixture is lean then listening to the revs very slowly out until the revs are the highest for that screw. Then with the color tune you can actually see the burn and the mixture colour changing from whitey blue to yellowish. When the mixture burn is yellow its a bit rich and when its blue its right. So I set the screw just as its yellow and then turn a bit more till the blue shows. The color tune is great to help confirm the revs and the sound of the engine. Its particularly good with the fulvia as you've got a choke per cylinder. And the way the rocker cover is makes the using of it easier. They are really tricky to get into the spark plug holes but I've worked out a technique by leaving the long extension lead on the colour tune and carefully tighten it in by hand . I've heard horror stories of the colourtune getting stuck or snapping off. So its literally until its just resisting the turn and no more. They get really stupidly hot too, so a small box spanner to remove it otherwise I've burnt myself. I've used it in the past on my old herald, mini A series engines and my wolseley 1300. Helpful for them but really useful on the fulvia with the 4 mixture's, one per cylinder. Also important is the synchronizing of the two banks of carbs I will get on the computer and put some pictures up.

yeeeeeha fixed it. New NGK plugs and a reset of the floats in the carbs. I found a series 1 starter (and it worked). Thanks to Phil-m who did a swap with me for a series 2 starter a few months ago I forgot I had it. I synchronised the pair of carbs (which was way out) with the motorbike carb balancers. Also did the colourtune mixture set up and all of them except one were way out. pictures to follow.

No chucking in the towel. Keep at it it, will end eventually . I find that sometimes a step back is all that's needed Thanks for this. Sleep on it and then things are different in the morning. So I'm thinking that one side of the carbs is really overfueling as the float valve is set wrong and flooded the plugs. The engine is very newly rebuilt and the load of fuel has washed the bores causing very low compression. So over fuel, fouled plugs and low compression leads to none starter. The poor old starter motor which is not really that beefy has got cooked and there you have it. So embarrassment at the MOT but what the hell... onward and upwards. I'm looking at one of these as an upgrade to the starter. Its expensive but sounds like the dogs danglies. www.wosperformance.co.uk/media/uploads/files/2/wosp-web-brochure.pdfthey also do a replacement dynamo. A sort of Dynamator.... really expensive but also sounds cool.

^ as above, check for a spark (I normally pull the center "king" lead from the distibutor leave other end attached to the coil, rest the free end near the engine and turn the motor over on the starter - watch for a spark from the lead to the engine block) Does the new ignition need a ballast-coil or non-ballast-coil? ( maybe the coil is fine for points but not for your new setup?) Just a thought ... I try to make 1 change at a time, then it's easier to guess what's stopped it working I think you may have a point with the coil. ?? its a non ballast I think but maybe I need something with a bit more oommph than the one on the car?

plums! How bloody frustrating. Must've run too low when you took me round the block. Try the magnet idea, to pick up any metal/rust crud from the tank. I'll ask around for a tank plug with the arms to support the gauze filter, which yours is missing. I doubt much would've got through your inline filter, to contaminate the carbs again. Check the filter first. Use any time to change the shocks ~ you'll be surprised how much better it'll feel. Did get too low on fuel again and some junk went in through the system. Still cant start it but theres a tiny bit of life there. The float valves are suspect I had a bit of a reset after you went and think ive bu**ered something up ? Now the starter is sounding like ive cooked it. Shock changing sounds like something positive. As I'm near to chucking the towel in with it. I need to do something that goes forward

If you know of a source for the original rubber mats, let me know. Might reduce the racket a bit Theres a company that deals with automotive rubber components. I need to get on the computer to find it.

Carpets!! Excess weight, and a brilliant water trap. Rubber mats are lighter and don't hold water, and they're how it came out of the factory. But, hey... each to his own :-) MOT booked? Hahaha, Yes thats true, but sorry Justin, I would have rubber any day its got a 'cool' look too, but cant afford a set at the moment. I'm getting the MOT booked they are not there today. Mine had a burgundy carpet set when I bought it and a really rotten rubber sort of mulch under that. So the wet carpet sweated the rubber..... not nice.

slightly embarrassed now. I had a look at the fulvia today. heres the fuel filter blocked with curse word. heres the insides of the carbs no fuel at all. So I re- cleaned out the carbs all the filters and took the plug out of the tank. About 5 drips came out of the tank. So no fuel and the dregs went through into the carbs and blocked everything again. I chucked a couple of gallons in the tank and it started first touch. What a "doh-nut" Well it runs well and the quick run round the block was excellent. The old girl has got a bit of grunt too! Had a huge grin on my face. The idle still wanders around quite alot but I'm fairly sure the distributor is not behaving as it should. Its just worn and the weights for the advance are slack. The electronic ignition is working properly. Realistically theres not much to go wrong, it either works or doesn't at all. Got the windscreen washers working and even found and fitted a clock that works too. Moving forward to MOT time.
