Good idea initially using the M103 2.6, as Simon says you can always get a good 3.0 later and then it will be a direct swap. For reference the Euro (no smog equipment) 2.6 non Cat produced 166 BHP and the 3.0 188 BHP and probably a similar torque difference ( I can check that if you want), so not the end of the world provided your current 2.6 is in good health. I'm presuming you won't have the requirement/need to fit a Cat on the W111?
Even if you're not too keen on the 2.6 (I wouldn't be) you can use it as a mock up, that will give you a true picture of everything required and how everything is sitting.

Sound and knowledgeable advise as usual. The way I'd go about this transplant is: M103 or 104, 4 speed speed auto (or 5 speed manual) and a standalone engine management system. What do you reckon Simon, am I missing anything out? That's the sensible way to go about it, you land up with a far better car in the long run. Whilst you can (and I have many times before) use the original hfm setup, it burns through money and time quickly to the point that your costs are the same as a standalone setup. The 3.0 M103/4 engines can be used as they are, infact you can actually run a m103 on 3 wires! Though if power and reliability is the goal an EFI conversion is the way to go. cheers, good to have your input 👍

One other thing to watch out for with the 3.2 and 3.6 m104's... On later cars in the engine ECU plug on the body side, there are 2 shrouded pins. These pins are linked to the ABS system, and if they don't see a vehicle speed signal your engine wont rev above 4000rpm. If it's a w124 with cruise control, the engine wont rev without the cruise control ecu's being present. This is because the throttle signals to the ecu go via the cruise system, you cant bypass it either unless you swap ecu and throttle body to non cruise versions. The points above are the reason alot of people just fit an aftermarket ecu, much less trouble. Also keep to 4 speed gearboxes, the 5 speed unit is junk. Don't discount a 300E with the 3.0 engine as a donnor, the old m103 engine has a fair amount of guts about it. And if you find a 300E-24, those scream like a banshee! Sound and knowledgeable advise as usual. The way I'd go about this transplant is: M103 or 104, 4 speed speed auto (or 5 speed manual) and a standalone engine management system. I think the main issue is that I highly doubt I'll get back what it owes me - but I'm sure the same could be said of most project cars. Ah, that old chestnut! We've all been there... You'll end up beating yourself up over nothing, if something has to give it usually means losing money when selling. You know what you want by the sounds of it. Sell the 222 to gain a Lanica (8.32, no doubt), not the end of the world, it's just man maths!!!

Put it up for sale, make it as presentable as possible and see what happens. Nothing to lose. Good luck it whatever you decide.

Ive been thinking about buying a fast ford mainly for the deprecation proof motoring, Buy it, enjoy it, look after it and hope you break even when you go to sell it. If you make a few quid, great and if you lose a few quid it shouldn't detract from the owning experience. Good hunting, just don't spend too much!

This is what a C36 engine should look like. As per brc76, spark plug cover and normally it should have a AMG logo on it. Also note the 3.6 stamped on the inlet crossover pipe.

I think that M5 is a great buy, much prefer it to an M3 which would be double if not triple the price. The 500E, which I reckon is an E500 I wouldn't say no to, if cost wasn't part of the decision process I'd have the Merc.

It's funny in a way. Non 'M' E30's are becoming more expensive daily, while E34's are only slowly increasing in value. Having owned different versions of both I rate the E34 overall as a far better car. A late 525i manual would be my pick.

Hi, Murph. Yes, I aware of Copart and similar. The one car that grabs my attention is the '95 AMG C36. M104, 3.6, 277 BHP, 4 speed auto transmission.
With a bit of luck carat 3.6 (Simon) might chime in and give his views on such a transplant.

This is at Copart here in Denver59,000 mile engine and transmission 1999 3,2 V6 Electronics, would be my concern with fitting that. It would seem to me the best option is a M103/M104 with their four speed auto boxes. I'm no authority on the subject as I didn't complete my transplant (M104 with a six speed manual) but I looked into at the time with a reasonable amount of research.

Then Yesterday this turned up 1969 280 S 129,000 miles California car with 0 rust and I could not turn it down. So now another car to move around, more cars than sense. Very nice. Love the stacked headlights.

A van? FFS, that's like asking what breed of dog you should get and you buy a donkey! Anyway, happy motoring and good luck with new wheels.

I am new member and have a W111 coupe I want to put in M104 engine and auto transmission, I bought 1990 300E 3.2 complete running car to do this. Any information on this engine swap is much appreciated, motor mounts and drive line info. Thanks Murph, where's your thread on this? I'm asking because, 1. I don't really like getting involved in a thread high jack, even if there's no harm intended and 2. your W111 project deserves it's own thread.

Are you sure that your 300E has the M104 3.2 in it? Was it swapped in the past? All the 300's I have seen use the M103 3.0 motor, though I think the M104 came in 2.8 and 3.2 sizes. Some markets like the US badged the cars differently, our 320 was the 300E 3.2 out there. Another one would be the 300D 2.5 diesel. Spot on as usual. The last of the non face lifted 300E's in the U.S. were 3.2's, I think it only applied to the '93 model year cars. From memory, late '93> cars were face lifted and badged E320's.

Start a thread and post some pictures of where you are now with the two cars, we'd all like to see what you have to work with! +1 rmurph364, do start a thread on your project. Photos too.
