Right, so with the boot solid it was time to have a look at the drivers side, yep - it was almost as bad as the passenger side had been!
More filler:
Choppy choppy:
Even more choppy choppy - this side was easier in a lot of ways as I had already figured out the various layers used in the shell when dissecting the passenger side.
New metal started to go back in:
Then I had to make up a bit to replace the curved outer I had cut off:
Tacked into position:
That was finished off and then I moved upward:
The last bits of welding were a couple of small holes at the bottom of the B post:
As with the other side, everything was primed, seam sealed and given a few coats of Tractol chassis black, followed a bit later with some Dynax UB:
It seems to be good stuff and has held up well, a few coats gives a thin dark film that stays soft and resists chipping. The internals were all liberally doused with some Dynax-s50 which wicks its way into seams etc.
So with this lot finished I could get the car back together and on its wheels again for the first time in many many months:
Which revealed the pile of curse word that i had removed (and some of my wooden blocks that I use for chocks, jacking etc):
I had said to myself from the outset (and when i realised how much filler/fibreglass/wire mesh/pop rivets and steel plate were involved) that I would weigh everything i cut out, so I had been simply sweeping everything under the car the whole time.
I shoveled it all into a box and whacked it on the bathroom scales:
Yep 15.5kg of rust, filler and other rubbish!
