So whilst passing time waiting for a flight home I came across a great replica build thread. linkNot only is there some great build details, but it starts with a great background of the car being recreated. Pus it has loads of interesting bits about how the car developed from a factory spec racer (well interesting if you’re fast becoming a capri nerd like me!). So if you too want to pass some time Obviously a thread is nothing without pictures - check out the dish on this And check out the box arches and aero on on the competitors! The car above became the blue/yellow/red one at the front of shot, along with chevy V8 and a massive bonnet bulge - said it developdeveloped And in one incarnation it got a Jag V12 on quad downdraft webers - now that always equals winner status Only thing wrong with the thread is it rather puts my Mk1build to shame - wish I'd see this before I started!

Believe it's all online so long as it's registered as a historic vehicle on the V5. But just remember it must still be roadworthy - i.e. capably of passing an MOT - the police can still request you prove roadworthiness via a safety check at an MOT station

I'd be up for an RR area, also if you need marshals

As everyone else really, I always felt the Hyundai Coupe came reasonably close (in modern terms) but not on the market any more. Mustang I4/V6 will be the closest thing I'd say. That's the thing with the Capri though, it's all about looks, practicality, decent but not amazing straight line performance and cruising ability (surprisingly good ride comfort, for it's day anyway), and few cars really focus on that mix of attributes any more. The Hyundai Coupe and Saab Coupes used to, but they're gone now, and neither ever really had the looks? There's the GT86 I guess, but I've never been sold on it's looks, and it doesn't priorities ride/cruising comfort - it goes for dynamic abilities instead, and that's not a very Capri thing, even when you 6 link the rear end and fit coil-overs all round like I have! I've also heard the Mustang is trying to be all capable in the corners, which oddly worries me! Just doesn't seem right!

I think the front wings on an escort are at least partly structural, if fitting composite I think additional strengthening would be needed. They really aren't structural. And if they become structural then the chassis rails/inner wings must be missing! The escort design is very similar to Capris. We've used fibreglass ones on Laurens Capri because of the price of steel ones. However there are a couple of drawbacks to the cost save. Fitting them is not quick or simple. You will have to fettle them a lot to get nice shut lines (add remove material), and you have to make sure you don't bolt them on with stress in them (i.e. force them to take a slightly different shape) as they'll start to fret and crack. Bolting them on is pretty easy, either just use std bolts or go more permanent and use weld nuts or riv-nuts. The tricky bit is prepping for paint to get a nice, wave free, finish. They will need some sort of skim of filler to get rid of the worse of any depressions, then they'll need priming with etch primer to make sure you get good adhesion. Then you'll need a couple of coats of pucker (2-pack) filler primer - this it to ensure you get rid of any pin holes/waviness. Once that's flatted back, just paint as normal. Finally you need to give the insides of them a heavy coating of anti stone chip paint to make sure you don't get any cracks forming from the inside of the panel - I cannot stress this bit enough! The best place to get them is either www.smithanddeakin.co.uk/ or www.honeybournemouldings.co.uk/ We used Honeybourne as they're up the road from us, but heard good things about S&D too. They're well made, but like I said, don't expect them to fit perfectly. Basically it comes down to how much you want to spend - if good steel panels (bad ones will need just as much work as fibreglass - be careful there are very few good steel wings left for mk1 Escorts, hence the price. I've had some re-pro Mk2 ones that needed cutting and re-welding they were that bad!) are expensive then the extra fitting and prep time of the fibreglass ones might be worth it - but don't under estimate how much time it takes to get them to fit/look right (I did!) Have a piccy of them on Laurens - not perfect (still think a bit more filler primer would help) but you only notice the waviness under artificial light so good enough.

Always been a box arch to me, and in the land of Ford they'd be called X-pack arches.

No excuse for me not to go if it's moved to the armories then - I live a mile away! If the weather isn't too bad I'll drag the Capri

We built Lauren's Capri to be used daily, hence a fancy stereo, electric power steering, uprated brakes, central locking etc. Whilst it really only gets used in the summer because of how much effort we put in, but there's no reason you couldn't use one every day, they're very durable just need to be given some TLC and regular servicing/checks. I used to use my old Mk2 Escort everyday and it stood up to 50,000 miles in 4 years really well. They even make surprisingly good camping cars - nearly 1000 miles in a week and not a problem

Cheers guys Please don't tell me that your unit is based next to a certain Lotus Specialist and a Pug one as well? I was eyeing up their units years ago. It's not actually, it's a place out on it's own on a pretty big farm site. Not really had time to do anything on cars, as been building stuff like this (big thanks to Alex1380 for all the help ) Still moving stuff (joy!) and got a load of warehouse rack to collect now. Will get back to the cars soon, don't worry!
