Todays plan was to take the wheels down to Ed's and get some work done on the car. Part one of that plan was a fail however because it seems that while the tyres have been stacked up in the garage the sticky backed weights have stopped being sticky backed and need to go down to the tyre place to be re-fitted. I went down regardless and when I got there was really pleased to see the drivers door fitted; first start 2 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr And when I say fitted, it was perfect. Even panel gap, straight lines and smooth hinges (no lock yet so sits a little out when not being held). first start 4 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr In the spray booth the bonnet, engine lid and passenger door have been top coated ready for colour sanding; With the passenger door not fitted I couldnt get on with assembling the internals so I sorted out some wiring. These blocks had been fitted when the alarm was wired in so I removed the blocks and soldered the join; Also had to add a live feed from the battery to the alternator; This meant we could do this She lives again....Woohoo.

Christmas is over so I had a bit of time to myself today to get something done. I want the bumpers assembled before they go down to Ed's, that way they just need to be bolted on so I started with this pile of bits; The light bulb was an idea I had earlier Tongue Brackets and over riders on; First idea was to use the bumper bolts and mount the numberplate half way up the bumper; Second idea was to mount it below the bumper; Decided that it would be better looking if it was below the bumper so I had to start measuring the center points of the bumper and number plate and decide where I wanted to drill holes in the nice new number plate. With the measurements made I could make up a cardboard template for the mounts; Transfer the shape onto some steel; Cut out, bent and fitted; With the number plate drilled in the right place I could transfer the location of the holes to the brackets; And jobs a good'un. Finished off by taking it all apart again to paint the brackets.

Brilliant.... And local to me as well. Funny seeing the centre one tower in East Kilbride, its easy to forget that was even there. You might be interested to know I still cycle around Glasgow looking for interesting motors; flic.kr/s/aHsjsVpHU3And if you have pictures that you wouldnt mind me using for this project I would be grateful if you could get in touch; flic.kr/s/aHsj8y1AjeLooking forward to the next installment. Careful now, double solid white lines and chevrons are there for a reason and you just provided evidence for the prosecution.

Wasnt Rover the classier brand? Prime ministers had Rovers, book makers and spivs had Jaguars.

Really sorry to see such carnage, hope you get back on your feet soon.
Quick question, did I drop off a yellow 1303 Beetle there a few years ago?
Looks vaguely familiar.
Dave.

I finally finished the edit on my seat re-trim video.
Proof that the TMI covers are so good that even a bodger in a messy garage can get good results.

Nothing exciting to report, the wee car is behaving itself and touch wood it will continue that way. Used it at the weekend to go for the tree, infinite headroom has its advantages; Holidays are coming 11 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr Holidays are coming 3 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr That should give me plenty of needles to find through out 2017. I had this for a few years; The route 9 recovery truck by Dave Campbell, on Flickr The route 9 recovery truck by Dave Campbell, on Flickr According to the builder it had been a mobile police office. Cab was bolted to the bed and unladen it was very bouncy, the rear axles were torsion sprung in the same way as a big trailer. Unladen but with all my tools and 2 people in the cab it weighed 2.2ton so anything on the back was borderline.

Looong time since the last update but work is still progressing. Johnny and Ed are doing all the prep work on the wings, bonnet and doors and while it is an important part of the work it dosnt lend itself to lots of pictures so the updates have been thin. I thought I would add to the thread with an observation on the terrible quality of some aftermarket parts. Around the handbrake lever is a rubber boot hiding the handbrake cables, the hinge and the heater control levers. A few years ago I bought a replacement boot for my fastback and at the time I could see the pattern wasnt quite right and the rubber went grey after a while but it was pliable and close enough to look good. This is the boot in question; Now fast forward to last month and I was buying some parts from Heritage. By spending another £4 I would get free postage so I thought I would add a handbrake boot at £7.50 and I had the order sent straight to Ed's. When I was next at Ed's he said "your handbrake boot is here but I'm not fitting it". I thought he was referring to the fiddle it takes to get it on or that he had noticed it was a replacement like the one fitted to the Fastback but this is what had arrived in the post. See if you can spot the issues....... What an absolute piece of sh*t. Not even close to the correct texture, it looked more like these than a VW handbrake boot; Thankfully Heritage refunded the £7.50 or I would have had to burn it to rid the world of it but quite why a major parts supplier would stock something so bad is beyond me and there must be people out there that accept this curse word and fit it to their car. At the moment I will be trying to re-use the original. Right, rant over and hopefully normal updates will resume soon. Dave.

Frustratingly that dumped one looks better than my "keeper"! Tailgate ha been nicked but the hinges (which are seemingly expensive) have been left behind. Don't suppose it was dumped near enough to a property to assume awonership was there? Could do with a few parts for my own. It has been there at least 5 years. I just searched my hard rdive to try and find my other picture of it from a few years ago. As for ownership. It is in the yard of a dodgy looking garage in a not so nice part of the city so wouldnt fancy approaching them to tell them I knew what was in their yard as it may not go down well.

this is absolutely beautiful! well done so far! Thank you very much. I am chuffed with the way its coming together myself. Another bit of the jigsaw collected today when I went for the freshly powder coated wheels and took them to get balanced. You will notice the lack of weights on the wheel rim. I got the guy balancing the wheel to use sticky weights on the inside of the wheel. Dave
