I've noticed that when the engine is cold, the 'box in my Granada can take half-a-second or so to take up drive. It's especially noticeable if sitting in Neutral at a junction, and you then select Drive. It takes a little while then jumps forward, there's no 'creep' that you normally get. It only seems to happen when cold, once it's warm it's fine. The idle has been a little lumpy recently too, with it sometimes dieing when the engine catches. I have some new HT leads ready to fit (it's just been serviced so I know the plugs are good) but I don't think the 'box issue is related. Any ideas? And is it expensive?

My Mum is on her second Cougar and loves them. No real issues on either of them, I've done a few miles in the back and it's perfectly fine. Everything Strada says is spot-on.

So, I've been lucky enough to come into a few quid, and thinking that I might spend a little bit on the car. But not sure what to do? I like it pretty much as it is, so I won't be going mad. Clear repeat indicators (yes, still haven't got round to that) and maybe some new springs to drop it slightly (especially at the rear). Anything else you can think of that won't cost a fortune?

It's good to see that this isn't a case where 'another one bites the dust'. You've made a real 'breakthru', and it's finally got 'somebody to love' it. It must have just cried out 'save me' to you. Don't rush into it 'headlong' once you get into restoring it, but you'll soon be thinking 'don't stop me now'! How's that, then?

I must admit, I completely forgot about this If I'm honest, it hasn't really taken off like I'd hoped. I'm partly to blame because shift work can be a right curse word when it comes to having a social life. Is it maybe time for a rethink? Although the Wharf is a pretty cool location, it's a little bit tucked away in the back end of nowhere, and the new development means there is less space now than there was. Would a different time be better? Maybe an evening meet, or a weekend breakfast meet?

1992 Granada - it was built in February and registered in April, so I would have just got a new job, working for Yellow Pages in Slough, and going through the process of buying my first flat. What I wasn't doing was driving, as I hadn't passed my test!

I personally don't see why everyone is having a backlash against styles of cars . Were people not just going crazy over J cars and sticking stickers all over cars because it was different ? And now so many people are doing that , people are finding other stuff [ British cars / style ] just to be different ? Smacks of hipster fashionista to me . There is no such thing as British cafe racer style , its just someone coming up with a rebrand fancy name for something that has allways exsisted , it just becoming 'cool' now because its different to most peoples cars . A new name for something along the lines of calling early golf mk2s 'type 19s ' and vauxhall corsas , ' corsa a's . I There's no backlash that I can see. The OP is about a 'British style' that other car cultures could apply to their cars. If a German 3-series owner decided to try something different, and looked to the UK for inspiration, what would he see that would make him say 'Yes, that's what the Brits do'? He can see obviously what the Japanese do, what their style is, but is there anything that shouts to him 'That's a car modified in Britain, by a Brit'? All HoTWire is asking is 'Is there a Brit look? Do we have it? Is it a café racer style?'.

But I think there might be one element missing from that list, a sort of badge of honour. Some scenes have a front mounted oil cooler, patina (fake or real), a subway grab handle, a roof rack or a long gear lever. But I’m not so sure what such a thing might be for a British look? Keeping with the ‘S’ theme above, maybe it could be supercharged? That's an excellent point. And now I'm cogitating as to what else it could be... I suppose you could say (although expressly forbidden in the OP) that it is the Minilite

This is probably a silly question, but if it's currently illegal, how come we have the Brighton Speed Trials?

Working the night shift is bad, because it leaves me a lot of time to think. And what it's led me to think is this... That Mini speedster is cool, but pretty old skool (and nothing wrong with that). And the examples that HotWire mentioned in the OP are all old-skool too (GT6, Herald etc.) Could we bring the concept a bit further forward? MINI have sort of done it with the Superleggera Vision: but that's too modern for us. What about.....a Mk3 Escort cabrio? I have no graphics program (or capabilities!), so I shall have to paint you a picture with words. I'm aiming for a kind of Escort speedster/barchetta/special. Rip off the roof, remove the bumpers, rollbar and rear seats, weld up the boot and doors, and remove the locks. Weld in a bulkhead behind the front seats and add in some more strengthening to the shell. To cover the space that once held the rear seats and roof, add a 'fairing'. If possible (and it might not be legal to do so), cut the windscreen frame down to at least half its height, or remove it and fit aero screens. Take out the dashboard and replace it with a very simple binnacle, with a speedo and rev counter (actually, the Superleggera has a nice simple dash). Lightweight bucket seats and harnesses, but I think we still need carpets. Rip out the door panels and all the gubbins for the windows and fit basic flat door cards. Remove the front indicators, plate over the holes, simple dome indicators in the bumpers below the headlights, maybe with separate sidelights too. Simple separate domes at the rear too. Remove the grille, add a mesh, á la Mondeo ST200. Drop it a few inches, and add wheels to taste, I think I'd like black steels, with smooth chrome hubcaps and rings. Tonneau cover to finish. So...thoughts? Would it work? Would it look horrendous? Anyone up for photoshopping it to see?

I'm not sure about the leather interior thing. The seat on a café racer is barely a seat at all, so for the four-wheeled equivalent, I'd say you need something like a lightweight bucket. There's no weather protection to speak of (such as a fairing etc.) The café racer is all about lightness and speed, surely something like the new Caterham Seven 160 with the 660cc turbo Suzuki engine is exactly it? Or how about this Mini speedster?

It's July! The fourth Sunday is the 26th, so who's in? A word of warning. I popped down last month while you were all swanning off to the Pod There's a new 'container complex' being built at the Wharf, at the front of the parkour academy and it's left a lot less room for parking. I was lucky enough to find a space by the wharf wall opposite the O2 (where we generally park up) but we may need to find another spot.

To me, a British car is rorty, raw and chuckable, much like a café racer is. For example, I can't imagine the classic Lotuses or the Harris Escorts having come from anywhere else.

Talking of Corsairs, I'd say slammage is doing a very decent job of this kind of thing, although in a completely different way to how Darren is thinking!
