2 doors, but gold with a black roof always works And this looks rather nice too, although I'd be tempted to go with something other than red for the sides. So your side trim is like this? Although I think the red black 2 tone would still work without the bottom trim, it would seem odd to those in the know as all they would see is a sport copy with missing trim. I guess you could add trim, but was it made for 4 doors? I think the dark roof on a light body works well on these as the roof is pretty much a separate shape to the body.

You can get the flywheel off without a puller on my Villiers, lock in place (I used a rope) then crack off the centre nut which then unwinds a bit, gets tight again and when you carry on slackening it pulls the flywheel off. Poor description... but you hopefully get the idea. Yeah, your right. I remember now you say it. I'm confusing it with my Kawasaki 125's flywheel.

johnthesparky - Thanks, hopefully fixed now horrido - To be fair to the car it actually drives really quite well as it is. The tyres are pretty new and grip well. The plan, at least initially, is to get it to an 'as new' state mechanically and then reassess. As far as getting it to drive anything like a modern car goes I think it would be very difficult. The difference in feel mostly comes from the steering, which is much more direct than anything I have driven post-war due to the combination of a live front axle and a very fast steering box which is much closer to a kart than a car in weight and response, if not precision. Brakes can and often are replaced with 7" Morris Minor hydraulics but I am doubtful that this actually improves performance over well adjusted cable brakes as the area in contact is the same, it just feels less alien to someone not used to cable brakes. The weakness is the use of single leading shoes front and rear which I think can, and possibly will, be addressed. The fear for me in modernising such a car would be a loss of character and occasion when driving, but performance at best still behind that of an A30 or early Minor. Paul H - keep an eye out, she is in daily use now If the brakes are anything like fords of the era, the adjuster should float on the back plate. If It doesn't (they are normally seized), the brakes are rubbish. Freeing them off transformed my anglia brakes, could lock up the brand new crossplys easily.

Anyone catch the reg on this? Wondering if it's my old one Apparently this was auto, so unlikely to have been my old one. Mine was NDN 198T, 6 cylinder 520 manual. Sold to someone on here probably 13 years ago! Had an avocado interior 😎 Edit, seems maybe this wasn't auto! Would be nice if this was my old one, I know it's still around so it must have had the welding done by now! People also seem to have a habit of turning my old cars into show worthy vehicles!

Great thread , whilst being from south of the river I’m a Ford fanatic have been since I was a kid I remember being driven past Dagenham and looking in awe at the place It’s not the same driving down the A13 now it’s nearly all gone Can't imagine it could be any worse 😂 Got a soft spot for that area though, spent most of my teenage life in a workshop behind wag bennets motor factors.

Well, I grew up within a BMX ride of the ford factory, so you can take your pick with that lot! Where I live now, the nearest would have been sheffield simplex I guess. Can't find reference to anything in chesterfield. I'm sure there mist have been more in Sheffield but I don't know. Simplex made this though, which is pretty epic really.

I had another look at the carb yesterday and it’s still leaking so I’ve ordered the repair kit available for it and a new air filter. Good old YouTube came through with 2 videos of this exact carb being refurbed so hopefully there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s say the carb refurb doesn’t cure this issue where do I go from here? If the carb rebuild doesn't sort it then it's ignition time. I don't know this engine but it's no doubt all behind the flywheel as they like doing that. Means it's a pain to get to, you need a puller, and setting the timing may be tricky. Hopefully the ignition coil is ok. One thing at a time though, carb first, new plug (or at least clean the old one) and see what happens.

Can't really tell from the pics, but do you have the prop? Would be a bit of a clue as to whether the gearbox is about or not.
Whatever happens, at least you have a bellhousing. The box could possibly be changed. What about a ford sidevalve 3 speed box mated to that bellhousing?

Just curious, farmer has let you dig it up, but has he said you can keep what you find? I see no real reason why he wouldn't, just curious. Fortunately he realises it's a "negative equity project", it has no real value in its current state and the quantity of people who might be interested in undertaking restoring it would be minimal to say the least. I wouldn't be doing it to sell it as it's something I found with the kids and I would like them to be involved in and have in the future, it could possibly break even on the amount I spend on it if it was sold but if you added up the hours it would be nowhere near. But also like you say, if you do it over a long time, little bits of time and money here and there, it doesn't seem as bad. This is exactly how I hoped your reply would go As for the gearbox, does it look like the original studs have been undone, or have they rusted through? I find it hard to believe that car went into that gulley without a gearbox. Could possibly have been removed years later but if it's so unusual, that means someone else had the same car! What I'm getting at is, maybe the original box is still there somewhere?

This is great, and its way more stuff in better condition than some motorcycle rebuilds start from. Admittedly those kinds of restoration are normally for vehicles worth a fair bit of cash, but this looks like a viable, of very long term, project if your into it enough.

Not sure if this helps Not really 😂 The black thing may be a float. As it rises it may bring a needle up with it which seals the fuel inlet in the bottom? Or, it could be a diaphragm, I've no idea, never seen that carb before.

Throttle won't close fully or it wouldn't run.
It's possible it may be supposed to close more than it should, but it also may be set right as it is.
I assume it has a throttle stop screw somewhere to adjust that.
But it probably ran right once, so the settings are probably ok (unless someone has fiddled) so current running issues will more than likely be dirt/wear related somehow.
Have you tried to find the manual for the engine?
As I say, loads of villiers info out there on the web.
The type on my mower is the only villiers I know anything specific about though unfortunately.

Strip the carb down, clean it out and check everything seems to be doing what it should.
It's probably worth finding out how to get to the points too, give them a clean and check.
Loads of info out there for villiers engines and the vintage lawnmower groups on Facebook are very helpful.

I have no experience of your engine but the fuel issue sounds like a float/shot off valve issue.
Hard starting may be due to the flooding that would cause? Or timing, or ignition coil.
If it's basically magneto ignition like mine, the coils ha e a reputation of failing. Would probably show up as hard hot starting though.
The ignition timing on mine is daft. You ha e to move the flywheel, no marks, no anyways, nothing. You just have to work out tdc, and set the timing that way.
Tbh though, sounds like its probably just over fuelling.
