forget about the flash, using a flash properly is an art in itself, get to grips with the iso/shutter speed/aperture to start with.

i see it the same as walking into a shop and seeing a price on the shelf, the price you see is the price you pay, if there was a mistake the shop takes it on the chin. Just interested to know your thoughts on this. as pretty much already said - if a shop displays something incorrectly by accident, like a massive tv for £40 - they are not bound in anyway to sell it at that price - you can offer to buy it at that price still but they can turn it down. i think people seeing stuff of mistakes made on argos/tesco/etc websites, where stuff like this happens and they let it sell at the lower price - makes people think its some sort of law. in reality the stores notice it as a bit of cheap advertising. thats as far as it goes

get your aperture at its lowest value, f2.8 on that camera, you may have to adjust the zoom to get it to drop to 2.8.
get close to something in the foreground (like the toy car) and focus on it then the rest will blur up.
thing is 2.8 is still not that low, so it wont blur up loads. <f1.8 is where the magic happens (and where changable lenses on an slr comes in handy)

tubless tyres are a real pain unless youre doing track riding, i have been in this position with a bike and just got new clincher rims in the end. i wanted to use my bike and enjoy it at the end of the day

speaking as a person who works for child protection, we always tell people to prioritise the welfare of their kids over the wants of parents social lives and desires etc. although it usually applies to aggressive people and drug addicts etc, not bikes if choice.
even so if its upsetting your daughter maybe just suck it up and get a modern bike for the sake of her confidence.
I'm my own opinion though i would say you should modify the folder with some sick bmx parts, as they share parts quite well, tyres, brakes, bars etc.

advice:
1. only consider how awesome it is.
2. ignore everything else.
3. if you have any doubts, start back at 1.

ok i stand corrected on the car breaking thing but it probably wouldnt be a bad idea for him to do one in his garage to raise some capital on something more investment heavy.
i'd also heavily agree with the guy above about uni, except for the interest free loan part as its not interest free, and the landing a well paying job - they don't seem to exist for graduates these days. a degree is well worth doing, I'm glad i did mine.

hes going to need to graft and get his hands dirty, even if just to scrape cash together to get started.
hes got few qualifications or experience - also sounds like hes saying he wants to do something, yet not come up with the idea or do the hard work.
end of the day, he has a car and has rebuilt it, so has tools and space to work on a car and take it apart, so he can also drag one back to his house, work on it in his drive or on the road, etc
you need to look at what he can do/has done and what he will have by default. being all negative and throwing up minor problems as if they're real big issues wont help.
id like to have someone give me a plan of doing something really easy and fun and make money at it, but its not likely, is it.

doing something wrong if its going like that^^^.
id recommend taking a part time job to cover your living costs to start with, start a business on the side and build it up.
it is a load of grafting but you reap what you sow. ive done it since i was 14 and always done alright out of it.
you don't "need" a lot of anything tbh at the stage youre at, if you have your head screwed on and have a grasp of micro economics you can clean up with little outlay.
if i were you i would get 1 write off or dirt cheap car, for as little as possible (so you negotiate like crazy to get the lowest price) and get a car with some value in the parts.
get up early one morning, start at 8am. strip the thing. stop only for lunch, 30mins, get back out and keep at it till about 8pm. then do what ever you want for the rest of the day - youve earnt it. you should have it stripped in no time. then go about pricing and selling the parts lower than average sale price to turn them over quickly. weigh in the shell and any other metal asap to get some cash back and get it out of your way. in that 12hrs you can do a lot if you don't get distracted. so that means no curse word about on the internet, tv, making tea etc.
if you do this you will make your money back plus quite a bit, if you turn it over quickly you will make quite a bit in a short space of time. don't spend the money, just put it into the next one and build up. you can potentially do well if you do the graft
you will need to work hard at it though, it wont just happen.

if you havnt used spray paint before it would be worth looking on youtube for a tutorial.
painting is 99% preparation, so keep that in mind...
but several light coats is the way forward with paint rather than one thick coat. youll get a better finish and no runs/dribble.
if youre doing one off stars, i personally, would go for graffiti paint with a decent quality cap.

give it a good wash first of all, youll need to to get the paint to stick.
either masking tape and spray paint or get some acetate and cut star stencils from that for a better finish.
