Stone chip has no rust preventative qualities in it, all you will be doing is sealing in any rust. Anyway stonechip will not give the finish you want with a bike. You want to get as much corrosion out as possible then zinc prime it really. I was going to add that. Same as we do at work with undersealing. But my meaning was clean, treat, stonechip then paint it. Built many a Vespa and never had any of them rot from the inside out 😎 I wish you built mine... a small rust bubble under the numberplate tuned in to a massive hole, right up the length of the rear end, where grot from the rear wheel got in and rusted from the inside.

just another thing, I obviously want to rust proof this as best as I can.
would putting a good amount of hammerite on the underneath be the way forward or putting under seal on it be the right thing to do?

its a 1983 px125e with 177 polini. bought it as a non runner, got it running pretty quickly but it has a fair amount of rust. the usual rust bubble turns in to a large patch of rust when you start picking at it

ok thanks.
this:
wish you'd paid the £600 for someone else to do it
is kind of where I'm at. when I've done bigger jobs like cam belts and the like I usually think this when I'm half way through.

I am restoring a Vespa right now, taking it all apart and down to the bare metal, welding bits up etc. then it comes to the paint. so I can take it to a bodyshop to be painted or I can do it myself... will be white pearl paint (ill then be putting some martini stripes along the bottom and front leg shield) pro costs approx £600 - paint from local paint suppliers, proper facilities. or I do it, paint from the same suppliers but in aerosol form and a lot less cost overall. I would do it in my workshop (small, leaky roof, damp, no proper ventilation etc) and content I would get a good enough finish. but would it be as durable? I will be using it regularly and want the finish to be tough and durable like a paint job should be. keeping in mind a small dampish workshop at this time of year might not cure the paint so brilliantly would a body shop add hardeners and give better coverage, quality of job etc? i've sprayed bike frames and stuff but nothing this big before (not that its particularly big) is it worth coughing up the extra to have someone else do it? or is it just the same stuff only flying through the air on to the metal in a different method also martini livery for inspiration would be great and pics ftw

I like the pics did you use an IR enabled camera, or are they post production 'shopped ? Cheers, yeah it's a modified camera and using widescreen film lenses for the wide part. So they're not cropped. It's obviously necessary to use photoshop to get the best out of it (as with any image) but it's fairly minimal on these.

That sucks but this might... be a solution.
Go to dump get free bike.
Go to scrappy get air bag.
Make air bag look like saddle.
Fit to bike.
Leave it in your drive way with video camera pointing at it.
Let thief see bike and jump on.
Thief rides it 2ft.
Set off air bag.
Hilarity ensues.
Put video on yoonchoobs.
Make a few quid and free education to newly reformed (and castrated) thief.
Happy days.

this is cool too see.
the first car I didnt buy was one of these, same colour, had xr3 wheels and suspension with blacked out windows and peco 4 big bore exhaust.
£90 back in 1999. C reg. it looked pretty cool, got sold to some one else (who promptly crashed it) whilst I was trying to save £90!

With a car as significant as a muira, it's kind of out of the realm of being your car to do as you please with. You're more of a custodian of a car like that. You're still free to change it of course but I doubt it would be kept that way by the next owner (if it were a real one). First thing that would happen is it getting put back to standard again. As you get with furniture, houses, instruments, paintings etc that have history and been played around with

nice project. I've had a couple mk2 crxs. the last was a 16v with b16 engine. the weight difference between the 16v and the vt is enough to make the engine swap worthwhile.

around here in Brighton, theres only one type of place I ever notice that consistently have people queuing out the door and up the street and that's the people selling swanky ice cream.
hope you have got room out the front!

Haha, I loved the story and I loved the pics, and it all would have worked out fine if it weren't for these meddling kids! Having to explain yourself reminds me of when I was on an art college foundation course in the late 80's. Everyone smoked then, particularly at art college. So I made a name for myself and became something of a legend for my seemingly magical ability to re-use spent matches. Anytime anyone needed a light they'd come to me surrounded by a crowd of fascinated onlookers. I'd tell them to find me a dead match - there was always one close by on the floor or in an ash tray - and I'd then strike it and light their roll-up with it. Went on for a year. People I didn't even know would approach me, and then be left with their minds blown. On the last day, when everyone was off to new colleges around the country, a bunch of people were asking me to do it one more time before we left. I did it a bunch of times, and then, feeling generous, I offered to explain how I did it. I thought it might be a good trick for them to use to break the ice on their degree courses. So I told them how to do it. A parting gift. They all stared at me. The look of awe I had got used to seeing steadily turned to that look people have when they're trying to scrape the worst kind of dog sh*t off their boots with a lollipop stick. Instead of thanking me for the trick, they all responded by telling me I was the saddest sack in the entire college, and then they all walked away shaking their heads in pity. ( I used to buy boxes of matches, shave them thin with a scalpel, bend them, paint them brown and black and dip them in cigarette ash while wet. Then I made sure I always had a few close to hand which I would drop into ashtrays or by my feet if anyone looked likely to ask. Apparently that much effort just to blow people's minds was the act of a very sad man. I'd had a year of fame and entertainment out of it. My only mistake was revealing the extend of my preparation). Pics look awesome. Post more! I can see where you went wrong there. that was a good effort on the matches nonetheless. have another
