That's a really nice car you have there mate.
Shame about the air ride, but your better off leaving it for now and doing it when you have a bit more spare money to do it properly/ not be forced to cut any corners!

I need to do something with the back end as all the axles i have are a bit clunky (there both at least 40 years old) When i eventually get my garage built i think I'm going to use the spare axle that will come out of the Capri and make up a 4 link rear end to hang it off, which will also allow me to do away with the rear leaf springs which have sagged about an inch over the last year! This should also give me a better ride as the hillman leafs like to twist up when you get on it. If the weather is nice this weekend ill get some updated pictures out in the mountains

maybe they put BAR in instead of PSI? 3.6 BAR would be 52PSI which would point at the human error/ not knowing how to read the scale right.

Driving the old hillman yesterday was fun for about 10 mins until it steamed up so much that i couldn't see out. The problem is that i don't have any heaters as i had to take it out as the standard hillman one was knackered and doesn't fit anymore anyway due to the modifications i had to make to fit the mazda engine. When browsing the for sale ads a few days back, someone suggested a fitting Peugeot electric heater matrix as a fix for leaky matrix (I cant remember which advert it was though) which i thought i might be able to use with a couple of fans behind it to clear the windscreen. I'm not too fussed about heating the car up, I'd just like to be able to see where i'm heading Has anyone on here used a Pug heater matrix, or know which models they came in? Or have any recommendations ? I have tried using a generic ebay 12v fan heater , but it only had enough power to clear the bottom 2" of the screen! Ta, James

If you think of Codes arrangement, remove all the springs and then fully compress the damper you will end up with the top mount, spring separator and the strut body all making contact with each other, this is in effect what will happen when you bottom out the suspension as there's no rubber bump stops. The amount of travel you loose is the thickness of the seperator and the compressed helper above it which will only add up to about 20mm total thickness, but on the hillman struts you only have about 80mm of travel left when you get them looking cool with appropriate lowering so you have effectively lost 25% of your available travel, reducing it to 60mm. If you bore out the separator and flip it upside down, it will rub on the strut body rather than the damper shaft, where any wear will only really be cosmetic ( although it'll probably all be covered in copper grease with road grime on top anyway!) rather than wear away the nice shiny finish. I'm lucky as i don't need helper springs on mine so it cuts all the hassle down James

Since i last wrote on here i've fit the new engine along with rewiring the whole car and updating the MS2 before starting to re do the map on it from scratch. The old engine spun some bearings due to oil starvation on the limiter (doh) so i built up a fresh engine using my 99 head and an 04 block (with 60something and 50someting miles on) to end up with a bone stock motor that has 10.something : 1 compression. Matched up to the bigger throttle bodies and a new exhaust manifold, she breaths very well! Whilst fitting the new motor, i modified the sub frame so that it sits much lover, putting the engine and gearbox at a better angle which has reduced the propshaft/gearbox vibration it had, but magnified all the engine vibrations as i have hard mounted it ! I havent got many pictures throughout this process as ive been doing it in the rain down the side of my house so heres a short video to enjoy: The main problem i have is that i currently have no air filters as there's no where to fit them and the bike airbox wont fit! To get around this ive drawn up some velocity stacks that'll bolt onto the front of the 'bodies and allow me to fit my old socks over them for filters These should be done this week, one in ABS and the other in PLA so i'll do an update when they have been fitted and report back! I't wont affect performance noticeably at the sort of boost levels us mere mortals will see! My manifold was quite a bit smaller internally than yours is and i didn't have a twin scroll turbo either and still managed to make loads more power than the car felt safe with haha

I pulled the door card on my old e36 to lube up the winder mechanism. All i found inside were 2 bits of wood holding the window up and no mechanism! Hopefully you'll have better luck

Have a look up underneath the seat as i think the 4 wires are 2 for the seat belt and 2 for the air bag. Just make sure you disconnect the battery and press the brake pedal a few times to drain any residual current before connecting it back up!

As long as your helper spring has the flats and doesn't wobble around on the strut it should be fine. Sometimes folk put little shims in between like you have made and bore out the center to sit over the strut body. Remember that you shouldn't ever actually be using the helper springs when your driving unless your jumping it or picking the front wheels up doing a wheelie (which i'd love to see!)

Are your shocks bottoming out really quickly? You want to mount the helper springs below the main springs so that the separator between the two springs doesn't bind up and hit the top of the shock. That'll give you about 15-20mm of extra travel. Here's what i mean: I've used mk4 golf coilovers on the front of mine. The struts have a 2" body which you can clamp at the base to assemble them (I welded mine together) The ride height looks good though! I need to get mine back out to update the thread on here! James.

Loom change would be the best way to do it. I'm not sure whether the plugs/pin outs the same between the 1.8 / 1.6 ECU's but that might give you some issues.
If you do a loom change it might be worth just changing the Engine loom and taping it all up so it can be easily removed in the future.

Looking good Code! The welding looks quite nice aswell. Are you using a filler rod or just blending them in? If your on Instagram there's a page called 'WeldPorn' No boobies but some very nice welds to drool over!

They made quite a big deference over the knackered old bushings! They are still going strong too, even after having the turbo motor and a welded diff trying to squash them. They didnt make the ride harsh at all. It doesn't exactly ride like a new rolls royce, but it was still comfier than the daily haha
