Right back on to the wheels. Take my mind off the engine saga... I still think my wheels are a smidge too large for the car? I reckon I need 15"'s rather than 16"s. This will allow me to get the car a bit lower, and the arches will still be filled without having to go too low profile on the tyre and upsetting the ride. So, based on this old thread - retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=112483&page=2I have 2 favourites - BMW Mini One steels - banded, or re rimmed, to the right offset and width OR The wallet buster - Image Billet 46 wheels. I'd be happy with the banded steels if the outer rims could be polished. Can this happen though, because I'd imagine the band will need to be welded on the outside of the centre - therefore, there would be a weld line visible. Anyway, would be interested in peoples thoughts.

that car looks ace... thought about J engines in there?... an SR20DET will give you all the poke you could need for it and as long as the oils changed religiously they are reliable up to silly BHP figures... I've pretty much considered all engines that I think would fit but I will hopefully not have to go down that route. An SR20DET could be a lot of fun though ;D

Triumph Toledo - Goal = get it child friendly by fitting a child seat in the back and making a tilting seat frame for the passenger seat. Deadline - Wheels Day
Rochdale Olympic - Goal = get it trimmed, running, with modified steering Deadline = RRG 12 - maybe going up the hill - if it will get around the hairpin

Not really in the spirit of RR, but a 2 hour commute in anything is soon going to feel like you are losing a massive %age of your life. I admire anyone tackling that sort of commute for the right job - or if it's the only option - but otherwise, I would really question if you can handle it. If you can, not exciting, or as old as you'd like but but Ford Scorpio, Vauxhall carlton, early Saab 9000, Honda Legend, Nissan Maxima.......

So, I now just need to track down some cheap, tatty ones, strip, and get trimmed in the right colour. Which is the next big decision....... It is hard - if not impossible - to beat red interior trimming in a grey or silver car. Yep, you're right. It will be a dark red, I'm just trying to find the exact right shade - a mix of terracotta and red somehow....

I know you're a lover of lightness, do you remember the thread I put up on the Dolly forum asking about seat weight? These were the seats I was talking about. Slightly expensive though, I've never seen a set for sale second hand... I'll eventually get around to treating myself to some. Ah, I always forget about OMP seats. I weighed the Corbeau this morning - 6 kgs ;D albeit in vinyl, which is always lighter than leather.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys!
I do have an understanding wife, she has always been more than reasonable about it. I guess, compared to a lot of guys tackling a restoration on here, I spend a lot of money on the car, but probably less time on the car. Spending 1 day each weekend on the car for example, instead of spending family time would be more costly I think.
Anyway, I think I have come to a decision on the seats. Lotus seats going, hopefully get my money back for them. They're too modern, not comfy enough, and have the added disadvantage of being too tall for them to flip forward on any kind of seat frame - making putting anything in the back a real pain.
The answer has pretty much been staring in my face. I have some Corbeau Alpines fitted to the Triumph. They are very comfy, and lightweight. They are the same frame as the Classics. So, I now just need to track down some cheap, tatty ones, strip, and get trimmed in the right colour. Which is the next big decision.......

This has all made a very nice little story I love the fact you have bought this with the heart, there is no reason behind it other than something just feeling right about a Princess. Look forward to seeing this progress.

Right I rally a seat ibiza I can safely say there is NO difference at all I use 16inch for everyday driving and run on 14 inch on rallys and find no difference at all PRC Just out of interest, why do you run smaller wheels on the rally car? Reduce weight, or to have a little more rubber to cope with the hammering? Cheers guys, just trying to suss out whether a change in wheel diameter is going to lighten the steering everything else being equal.

Just to clarify, are wheel width, offset and tyre width also the same? Yep, exactly

Was almost going to put this in the daft Question Amnesty, but pretty sure it is warrants being in here.
If there are 2 cars, exactly the same, apart from a difference in wheel and tyre size circumference, what would the effect be on the steering?
Car 1 - running 14" wheels and a high profile tyre - combined circumference of say 600mm
Car 2 - running 16" wheels with a lower profile tyre - the combined circumference is the same at 600mm
Both wheels and tyres are the same width.
Would one car have heavier steering than the other?

So, yesterday, we took one step further, or one step back, depending on your viewpoint. I went down to Fareham and got in the way helped to remove this - from here - We left the box in the car, because ***** managed to remove the engine on its own like this last time. A fairly straightforward job, but as ever with this car, limited access makes the job longer than it should be. The current thinking is that maybe that he bearings have been starved of oil because there just hasn't been enough oil for the sump, the apollo tank, the oil cooler and all pipework. Taking an oil reading when cold is misleading, because all of the oil has drained into the sump, but as soon as you start up, that oil will start flowing into the apollo tank. Who knows..... Next step, get the engine sent back to the builder for a strip down. I purposefully didn't measure the empty engine bay for fear of getting one step ahead of myself. Life is easier and a lot cheaper if it is the K series going back in there. Damn the amount of money I have spent on running in oil, and only 100 miles ago, full synthetic. Oh well I also removed the passenger seat so I can strip it to bare seat shell. I'll soon be able to see if it can be modified to a low back with separate head rest. It would be dull if we always took the easy route wouldn't it! Hoping to get her back on the road to go to the RR Beach Party but we'll see....

Not sure how you determined the Chelsea Cruise as a South London meet though? Isn't it actually on the river - therefore as North as it is South? ;D Questionable logic, isn't it? And all the Kings Road cruising is, of course, north of the river... I was working on the basis that, er, sometimes they drive into Battersea Park. Ahem.
