hi guys..ever since ive had my passat, ive had this problem with the clutch.
sometime the pedal stays down (doesnt return up from the well) but the clutch starts to bite. sometimes if stopped in traffic, I have to switch off the ignition to stop from hitting the car in front.
I then really have to wrech the gear stick into neutral while engine is off.
it is hydraulic clutch. mastercylinder shared with brakes (no probs with brakes) and i have no clutch slip etcc so essentially i think the friction plate is fine.
as the pedal isnt returnign I'm thinking its a hydraulic prob..possibly in slave cylinder?? advice is welcome..

On a Senator with hydraulic clutch the take of from the brake fluid reservoir is very high up the reservoir - if the fluid drops below it it can cause clutch problems like those you describe Now I know yours isn't a Senator but it's the first place I'd look

Check fluid level first. Then check for leaks of both master and slave cylinder. Then check to see if the clutch fork is worn on the gearbox allowing the slave cylinder to push through the middle of the fork. If the fluid level is okay and there are no other problems it sounds like air in the system try pumping the clutch pedal up and see if it improves slightly. Then see about bleeding the fluid from teh slave cylinder. Not sure how you mean about the master cylinder being shared with the brakes. I am guessing you mean the cylinders are attached to each other the cylinders themselves must operate seperately and I would have thought that they must have seperate reservoirs.

gotta be a hydrauilc problem, either master cyl or slave cyl. I'd say master cyl if you are not losing any fluid.
Perhaps the clutch and brakes share a fluid reservior, but they won't share a master cylinder.

only other possibility it could be if its not hydraulic would be that the teath on the pressure plate are excessively worn causing the release bearing to sometimes catch on them or push through them slighty. Thats the most dramatic thing it could be so bear that in mind last as its a gearbox out job.

sorry, yes, they share the same resevior..(doh!) not cylinder..that would make for an interesting gearchange!
fluid levels are ok, i had it teh fluid changed at last service to try and fix the problem.
i had noticed the hoses were unclipped causing them to move around a lot when the pedal was pressed. i fixed all these back and that improved matters but not for long.
i think cylinders are only about £35..i think ill get them changed. going to be the cheaper first option.

I would bet £25 on it being the master cylinder then.
